View Full Version : Your favorite fighting game franchise is...?

Which one are you the most fond of? Are you a Street Fighter purist, or a Fatal Fury iconoclast? Do you rock the 3D games like Virtua Fighter or Soul Calibur, or are you more comfortable in the 2D paradigm?
Myself, I'm a huge Virtua Fighter and Soul Calibur guy. I play VF 4 or 5 an hour or so a night, and I used to participate in SoulCal III tournaments pretty regularly. My roots, though, are pure Capcom(Street Fighter II and III especially).
After a lot of thought, I'm going Soul Calibur. I love the guard impact mechanic, and the weapons add a lot of inter-character strategy. I've been playing a ton of 2D fighters lately, and while they have their charm, nothing is better for me than being able to side step a mouthy opponent and stab him in the kidney.
I'd have to say Tekken, simply because it's the fighting franchise I've played the most. OTOH I'm not too fond of the genre and generally don't bother unlocking each and every item. I prefer fighting against some friends.

Why must I choose?!?!?
I don't care for Tekken... that's about it.
I have a special place reserved for SvC Chaos... SF characters with KoF gameplay = bliss. :D In fact, I love most of the blended fighters. If I had to choose a favorite, they would be it. Is that cheating? LOL
*racking the old brain for an actual answer for the poll*
Virtua Fighter, I guess. Just slightly ahead of Soul Calibur... Ack! My head hurts...

As far as 2-D fighters, I have to say King of Fighters!!! Street Fighter is really good, but it never "clicked" with me like KOF does.
As for 3d Fighters, I have to go Virtua Fighter. I believe Virtua Fighter 2 to be the best fighting game ever made. Virtua fighter has always had great graphics, great music (Except part 4... Seriously WTF happened?), excellent character designs, and above all gameplay.
My all time favorite is without a doubt Virtua Fighter! And I got 5 installments of the franchise on my beloved Saturn!!! :D

Soul Calibur, but VF was very close behind in second with Street Fighter equally close behind in third.

Oh, I guess boxing games are excluded, never mind then.

I like any fighting game that does not have an end boss that is so unfairly hard that I want to destroy the game or break the disc in two.
I have played many great fighters that are easily destroyed by an unfairly hard last boss.

Street Fighter is my favorite franchise, but Garou: Mark of the Wolves is my favorite fighting game.

Street Fighter... I mean Street Fighter 2 was the game, but when it came out..
I've never waited soo long for a game to be released on a console..
I even ordered it from Japan to get it a month early, and that was back when you actually had to call in an order, no internet back then, for me at least.

Guilty Gear for me!
The character designs and gameplay are very good. :D

Last Blade 1, 2 and Pocket. Only three games, but all of them are incredible. Quality > Quantity.
As for the Street Fighters, I'd like to differentiate between SF2 (SF2 - SSF2X), Alpha/Zero and SF3. Super Turbo is a very good game, but I'm more partial to the Zero series, specifically Zero 3. I really can't say I've spent that much time with SF3 other than 3.3 on the Dreamcast. Maybe one day when it's possible to Phoenix dead CPS3 hardware I'll splash out on a 3rd Strike set-up.
Guilty Gear is another great series but I've not had the opportunity to keep up with all of the updated versions.

:-/ Name me some that aren't. (except Smash Bros- though brawl just edges into this territory)

Gotta go with Street Fighter.

Yeah, no Mortal Kombat? What about Dead or Alive? Killer Instinct? ClayFighter?
Just kidding about ClayFighter. :)

Street Fighter (which I assume includes any other Capcom fighting game that includes the characters and uses the Street Fighter mechanic/fighting engine(s) and all of their evolutions)

Yeah, my two favorites are Super Turbo and Zero/Alpha 3.
Where do the VS. games fit in? I really, really enjoy Capcom vs. SNK 2.

I suppose the Vs. games are more 'dream matches', and don't fit in with any storyline. Capcom vs SNK 2 is a very good game, but Match of the Millennium is the best game in the series imho.
I also like the Marvel vs. series. They're all good fun games with MvsC2 being the best.
I've never been able to really get into the rest of the Fatal Fury series but Mark of the Wolves ties equal first place with both Last Blades as the finest Neo Geo games.

Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike is as good as fighting games get in terms of rewarding high level play and balancing it with a easy to understand system.

For 2D fighters it's hard to pick. I love King of Fighters and Samurai Shodown equally. Street Fighter is good and it's the one that started it all but KOF has better characters and the team system.
For 3D fighters, I like PROJECT JUSTICE! But that isn't an option, so Soul Calibur.

Where is the love for PS2/Atomiswave Fist of the North Star? Its my favorite fighting game to date. Its fast, punishing, brutal, and has a high learning curve that forces you to practice. Also, Samurai Showdown V special is up there too.

It was a tough choice between GG and KOF, but I went with KOF cause it's so over the top. That, and I still feel the dissapointment from Isuka.
SF's in third, but I've never played SF3 so I can't really vote on that one.

There was no Primal Rage either. How Mortal Kombat isn't on here is beyond me completely. Isn't that one of the premier games that jump-started this genre? This poll is far from complete.

I did the exact same thing, I got it from a place in California (japans videogames) I think I paid $100.00 for it. Street fighter is the game that started the fighting genre, and is still the best one ever made.

Street Fighter. It'll always be my favorite. Street Fighter II was the first video game I ever played.
If I had to pick 3D fighting game, I'd definitely choose Virtua Fighter 4. I haven't played 5 yet, but I'd love to. No other 3D fighting game has as much depth as that series. Not to mention Quest Mode is insanely fun. :)
