View Full Version : A Letter from Mike Tyson (Punch-Out!!)

I'm not sure how many of you have seen this before, but I was going through some "orphan" manuals and came across this and had to laugh. It was originally packaged with Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! (http://www.digitpress.com/DP/cmf/game.cmf?gameid=5800) for the NES.

All I have to say is that the word "discipline" is used in this letter, which means Mike Tyson didn't write it.

Discuss.

I think that's a letter from Mike Tyson the chicken king. "Never get angry" was a bit of a giveaway.

"In essence, boxing is 10% physical and 90% mental and emotional."

So ... if I get into a boxing ring and Mike Tyson punches me in the head ... I'll only feel 10% of it physically?

His grammar is too good.

Definetly not Mike Tyson.

"In essence, boxing is 10% physical and 90% mental and emotional."

Mike Tyson's 10% physical part must have been huge if he won so many titles because I think he had about 0 on the mental and emotional part. Biting Holyfield's ear proves that.

I have a feeling that Mike Tyson either wrote this and was checked for spelling and grammar before packed in, or somebody possibly interviewed him and asked for his "advice to the kids" or something like that and worded it differently than he would.

Bah, Mike Tyson's probably not even aware that he was in a video game.

Yeah, this had to be translated:

"Never be intimidated by someone regardless of appearence" = "Holyfield, I will eat your children".

Quite amusing...like Kid Ice pointed out, Mike Tyson obviously didn't write it if it mentions to "never get angry".

9 times out of 10, if you ask for a letter from Mike Tyson, he'll write down the number 7.

Family Guy flashback....

(Mike Tyson is at a spelling bee)

Judge: All right Mike, spell "onomatopoeia".....
Tyson : Uhhhh, "C"...
Judge :I'm sorry, that's wrong.
Tyson : Aww, dang.

That's priceless..and there's no way in hell he wrote that. Did you find that in the basement? I'm pretty sure I went through all the manuals down there but never came across this little gem.

Yep, in the basement, in a large box of manuals and other game inserts that needed to be filed away and organized.

Never get angry....Ha ha. Obviously whoever wrote this had tested/played the game beforehand. I was often a raving irate lunatic when playing punchout. Joe, are you positive this came with the game? This letter smacks greatly of a 1980's mail-in waste of a stamp promotion.

Fairly rare item. A lot of people look for it to make their copy truly complete. I'm sure if you put it up for sale here you could get like $30 for it.

I'm positive. I have the same letter in my personal copy of the game, purchased shortly after its release.

Yep, I believe I have two of these. One in the copy I got from Ben Smith and one in copy I bought at Kaybee in like 1998. Yep they had a few sealed NES games left then. I forget though...was it originally glued to the back of the instruction book like the letter from your uncle in Startropics?

I also kept my letter. It came with my original copy I recieved with the game. Still one of my favorites to play, even though I know the patterns.

Geez, Mike may have gone crazy over time, but for sure he's not as stupid as some of you claim. :) Back in the mid to late 80's, his world was perfect. So I could easily see him wording a letter like this, "don't get mad" etc. Hell, he was making tons of money while hardly having to fight. He knocked people out before he had a chance to get mad! Of course over time starting with his first loss, everything went downhill. Oh and I'm sure he knew all about his own videogame coming out... That would be a cool question to ask him to see what he says. Infact, if I ever met Mike Tyson, I'd try to have a good long coversation with him about his NES game, which is one of the best games of all time in my opinion. :)

All that money he was making in the '80s sure didn't help his sense of style:

I don't think he went crazy over time; I think he was always crazy. Zebra carpet?

I would have looted that place. You could get maybe a hundred bucks out of all of those vintage VCRs and DVD players.

I also agree with this. However, it should make it's way to the front counter during future NAVA events.

I dunno, I haven't seen Mike Tyson in awhile, maybe he's in Joe's basement as well. :hmm:
