We were just a ... Wii bit shocked when a new Grand Theft Auto (http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/15/nintendo-announces-gta-chinatown-wars/) was announced for Nintendo DS and not the Big N's wildly popular home console. Still, it's no doubt a coup, but what about a proper Wii installment in the series?

MTV Multiplayer (http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2008/07/22/nintendo-president-talks-grand-theft-auto/) asked Nintendo of America prez Reggie Fils-Amie just that. When prodded on the likelihood that a DS version of GTA (http://www.joystiq.com/tag/grand-theft-auto) might lead to a greater possibility of GTA for Wii, Reggie stated that "GTA on the Wii is all based on what Rockstar and Take-Two want to do," adding, "From our standpoint, if they build a bottoms-up game that takes advantage of what we do well, I'd love to see it on the platform."

We're pretty sure Reggie meant a GTA that's built from the ground up for Wii. Or perhaps he was just getting into the GTA swing of things? If so, naughty Reggie!

How about going back to an overhead view or experimenting with an RTS style viewpoint. Better yet why not make a GTA game where the story follows a cop. It would be like an action packed Police Quest (admit it gamers, you want that). Just don't rehash the old formula AGAIN!

Reggie has a point. Ports that just try to shoehorn the Wiimote physics into the game, when it wasn't designed with those controls in mind, tend to suck more often than not. Good Wii games are designed with the Wii in mind.

I sincerely doubt that Take Two would build a new GTA from the ground up for the Wii, considering the direction that console has taken. If it even released one at all, it would probably use an updated version of the engine used in the Xbox or PS2 games.

If Rockstar and Take 2 meet half way with Reggie and follow the same route as Scarface and The Godfather, I think it would work. Scarface was excellently done with the Wii controls to the point where I can't play it on Xbox. I haven't played Godfather but I read that the hand-to-hand combat was pretty well done with motion control.

If GTA DS sells well I think it's highly possible there might be a Wii release.

Is Reggie implying he wants a Wii GTA that uses 1-1 motion control for beating prostitutes with baseball bats?

Yeah, I do want that. One of the reasons I can't get into GTA is because I absolutely despise crime/criminals and have no desire to play the role of one. I don't want to be a bad guy, I want to be the Hero, GTA from the police POV would be interesting to me.

Sounds like you need to play Crackdown on 360.

I can see this happening easily. A game company refusing to make a game for the worlds most popular console is like a person refusing a bag of money.

I mean, if they're making one for the DS, why not the Wii, it would certainly be profitable.

Dear Developers at Rockstar,

Please, please find a way to hide some sort of unlockable 'Hot Coffee' in the Wii version. With 1:1 motion control :P

Surely it would be the most entertaining gaming related event since, well, the original HC.

Cheers

Fun Fact: GTA was originally going to have you being a good cop chasing bad guys. Turns out, it wasn't very much fun. Imagine crackdown without the super powers.

Just make it a sandbox game where the only goal is to jack vehicles, kill prostitutes and Gamestop clerks (am I repeating myself? LOL ) all in the search for a Wii! The final boss can be a climatic battle of flatulence with a massive mustachioed trailer park lady in a pink and yellow polka-dot moo moo you must defeat to claim the last Wii on the shelf for your own!

PRO TIP: Be careful! She's packing concealed swarmer missile pods in her fat folds. Practice your dodge and fractacide skills! Shoot Gas-X rounds into her mouth while she is swallowing air to prevent her from unleashing the ultimate ass ripper. LOL

Spoiler Alert: The end game cinema shows the Mystery Machine roll up to the scene of the devastating battle. Velma jumps out and tears the mask of the lady and it's... WARIO?!?! He wanted the last Wii to sell on eBay, the greedy bastard! LOL

That pretty much describes the True Crime series.

I feel exactly the same. That being said, you should still give GTAIV a chance. Niko is far from being a "bad guy". The guy refuses to use various drugs, apologizes to pedestrians he accidentally hits, and even gives money to the homeless...lol. You choose whether to kill innocents or let them live during the missions. 99% of the people you kill are seedy criminals who (in the context of the story), deserve it. I've played for about 70 hours and have only killed 1 cop...and believe me, he had it coming. But I digress.

Niko is a good guy at heart but he still is a vigilante working for criminals. We need a cop hero that starts out stopping speeders and works his way up to going into undercover sting operations. In between he foils robberies, burglaries, car-jackings, prostitutes, pimps, drug dealers, etc. It could be fun in a strategic sort of way (have to follow the rules of the law). Icing on the cake could be an online police squad mode where teamwork is to key to foiling various crimes, robberies, car-jackings, etc. Rockstar could even go ahead and create this as a parallel series to GTA. Keep the GTA folks happy while gaining a new audience of gamers.
