May I suggest the following replacements?

Ninja Gaiden II for Ninja Gaiden:
While the first NG broke the most ground and formed the basis for the series, its formula was perfected in Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos. The gameplay flaws of the original are corrected (you can climb walls instead of having to jump-and-grab your way up), and the shadow-character gameplay is used to excellent effect. he story raises the apocalyptic ninja-versus-demons aesthetic to great pulp heights, reusing elements of the original without seeming predictable or lazy. The visual style is even improved, as the levels from stage 4 onward resemble some alien vision of hell that few 8-bit games could match in terms of atmosphere. Ninja Gaiden II is easier than both its predecessor and its sequel, but it's also more enjoyable because of this.

Lunar 2: Eternal Blue (SegaCD) for Lunar: The Silver Star:
As with Ninja Gaiden, the first Lunar set the template for it sequel, yet Lunar 2 outdoes the original in many ways. The battles are improved, the graphics are a shade sharper, and the storyline is superior. As in Final Fantasy III, every character gets a moment, and some clever turns of plot eschew the simplified morality of Lunar 1's plot. Plus Ruby's cooler than whiny little Nall.

Virtua Fighter 4 (PS2) for Virtua Fighter 2:
Impressive as VF2 was, Virtua Fighter 4 does everything better, and its pretty much the deepest fighting game ever.

Seconded. :)

However, I would like to see The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time on the list, If we're going to drop an action/RPG to make room, Ys Book I and II should be the first to go. As influential as the games were in story and cinematic presentation, their run-into-enemies gameplay just isn't all that fun. By the way, didn't we have a rule against including compilations?

Seconded.

UPDATED!

While I'm notifying you of this, I think I'll move this over to the Classic Discussions forum for permanent posterity.

Thanks to a seperate thread within in the CGV forum, I must ask...

Where in the hell is Bionic Commando??

I'll admit that I let this excellent game slip my mind, but I'm sure there are others out there that would like to see Bionic Commando on the list.

What should it replace? Uh.... does anybody really like Night Warriors that much? It's a good game but I don't see it as a top 100 game. When I first played it, I thought of it as 'Darkstalkers: Champion Edition'.

I propose Night Warriors be dropped in favor of Bionic Commando.

Jumpman (also C64)
Jumpman was scrapped in favor of Ultimate Wizard. I personally would have both on there, but when we almost lost Bard's Tale, I was forced to concede (check back 2 or 3 pages for the gory details).

Temo Super Bowl (NES)

This game has to be on the top 100

Reasons: As everyone can see their are only a few sports titles on the list. This isn't surprising as most of them are forgotten as soon as the next version comes out. This is not true with Tecmo Super Bowl. Tecmo Super Bowl has a huge following still to this day. Tournments both online and offline are going on all the time. This game is timeless.

Get rid of Tony Hawk 3

Underground is way better and the fact that every sequal in this series seems to be better then the last gives me reason to vote it off. I love the series but it isn't the best of all time. If it is going to stay on the list it will probably need to be replaced each year.

I've got your back.

Not only does TSB have a huge following, the game was a complete football experience on the NES years before Madden even got the basic elements of full season play and player and league licenses. The only flaws here are the flicker, the pink for red, and the cranky battery when you get near the end of the season (and that's because of the truly awesome stat-tracking in this game). Plus, one can't help but admire Tecmo's apparent love for the Bills (as they appear in all of the extra large manual's screen grabs). All in all, the premiere sports game for the NES, and on the short list for best sports game ever.

I've seen enough Tecmo Super Bowl nominations to convince me, I'm even throwing my own vote into that mix - it belongs here.

Now then, we still have like 150 games on this top 100 list. Someone tell me why a certain game on the list DOESN'T belong here!

Virtua Fighter 4 is a good game, but not in the top 100!!! Take that one off.

And yes, it does seem like every Tony Hawk game does get better, and I do love THPS1-4 + THUG, but something about Tony Hawk 3 makes it the one I like best. LEAVE Tony Hawk 3 on there!

Sorry, nary a less than stellar game on the list. Maybe everyone should pick, I dunno, their top 25 and eliminate games that way.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. River Raid should go. It's a great game, and deserves respect for being the granddaddy of top-down shooters. However, there are so many shooters that have taken the basic concept of RR and improved on it immensely. Were this a list of the 100 most influential or original or something like that I'd say yes. But top 100 of all time? No.

Sensible Soccer has to be in there, the CD32 one is excellant, (Sensible World of Soccer an an A1200 is the difinitive version) as are most of the conversions. It's still one of the most enjoyable and playable football games ever....ever! Without it I don't know what stage football games would be at. So yeah
:)
