Hey folks, I'm thinking about playing 7th Saga. Would you recommend this game? I just finished Dragon Quest VIII and absolutely loved it. I loved Earthbound and enjoyed Chrono Trigger. I really like old school turn based games. What are your ideas on this one?

I haven't played it since the late 90s, so I can't remember all the details. However, I'd say it's a good game, but not great. It's a tough one, though. I also remember it having some great Mode 7 effects. If you like a challenging RPG, why not?

(Also, you should have mentioned The 7th Saga in the thread title.)

It will test your patience and kick your ass. Sorry, no side quests.

It is terrible, don't bother. I played it for about 5 hours, and most of that was grinding. You go solo for the first few dungeons, and the monsters kick your ass. The graphics... well, the battle graphics are alright, but otherwise are pretty average. The story is pretty non-existant. If you like grinding, though, by all means.

Not recommended, due to insane difficulty.

And levelling up won't save you when you need to fight your fellows.

If your a casual gamer who thinks FF7 and Mario RPG was hard, this isnt the game for you. I've seen it make RPG fanatics loose their temper. If on the other hand you want a RPG where grinding isnt something you want to do and still keeps an edge of difficulty, this is your game.

If you must grind, I'd recomend saving before each level up and not accepting anything below 28 stat points total per level. Ultimate waste of time but eh, if you want to beat it without major grinding, it works.

Wow, this sounds like a game I should check out.

I enjoyed it a lot - I like games where you have to work for progress - and some of the battles were very very hard. Also there was a fair amount of flexibility to the game given the fact that there were 7 characters to choose from and one of the others (with some limitations) would become your partner.

I wish the sequel had been ported over here.

like everyone else said, it is hard but a fun rewarding game. it also had alot of replay value since you could play through it with all 7 charecters ,each of which was very unique from each other, they ranged from guy with sword, to robot all the way up to demon (i think he was called a tetus..something) The translation was pretty poor but it still was a decent game, some of the puzzles were real stumpers though.

Wasn't there a sequel? Or was that only released in Japan?

Clearly, if you're second-guessing whether you should play the game, you probably don't want to on a subconscious level.

So, my suggestion is don't do it. ;)

Only in Japan, yes.

Game is pretty and has nice use of Mode 7 effects, but unless you're into grinding and progressing very slowly, then the game isn't worth it.

The so called sequal is called Mystic Ark.

According to some sources, it's not a sequal per se.

There's still an ongoing effort to get it fan translated. It's headed by AGTP now.

I beat it and enjoyed it a bunch, it is hard as nails though so don't go into it lighthearted.
