Hey all. Long time no post here. I’ve been doing a ton of thinking lately and I believe it’s time to seriously thin out the collection. I know there have been numerous threads about getting out and dumping it all, but this one is mine lol. I’m usually one to post in and say “Go ahead and store it…you will always come back.” Well I’ve stored it and stored it and it’s been stored for a few years now. One thing that recently happened is I took a Motorcycle safety class, passed and bought a bike. Well I had to clear out some of the garage to put it in as I don’t want my beauty to stay outside. Well I moved some of the arcade games around and put some more stuff in the crawlspace. Upon finishing, I looked at what was already in there that I haven’t touched in years and it just came to me…it’s time.

We all have our reasons for collecting. Mine was the love of vintage computers, arcade games and consoles as well as everything associated with them. Don’t get me wrong, the love is still there but I came to realize that the only person enjoying my collection was me. My friends liked it, but they were only interested in playing the newer stuff like Dreamcast or Gamecube. Others would come over, see it and….well you know the typical responses. Suffice it to say, a great deal of the collection has been stored and no one has appreciated it except me. Well, I think its time to let others perhaps enjoy these pieces as much as I have, even if I was the only one who really appreciated them.

In the coming weeks I will be bringing boxes out of the wood work and most likely auctioning them off. EBay will most likely be the medium however as I start to unpack it all I’m pretty sure I will post some here for DPr’s. I have to say now if you are interested in anything beyond the Nintendo 64, you will be disappointed. Hell I don’t even have a bunch of that. The collection spans a lot of older consoles concentrating mostly on Atari. However if you are interested in Colecovision, ADAM, Tandy, Intellivision, Astrocade, Vic20, C64, Amiga, 3DO, various Mattel Handhelds, Microvision, then there may be some stuff for you. If there is any C64, Atari 8Bit or Amiga software you are looking for, let me know. I may have it. Oh, I’m also dumping my full sized Tempest and Cabaret Battlezone and maybe my X’s and O’s football if anyone in Colo is interested.

Let it be known, that I will not be leaving. I’m just downsizing by about oh 80% or so. I still have the love and I still love tramping around here, The Age, KLOV and other various haunts. You folks are the best and I appreciate this forum and all the others for many years of information, friendships, soap operas and entertainment. I will keep you all posted on the unearthing. Thanks.

Fred

Just as long as you link us to your eBay account so we can each take a stab at your collection.

I hope I never get to this day in my life... but if it is more hassle than sentimental value for you to keep, good luck and I hope you find every piece a good home!

I hear you, brother!

I too took a motorcycle class and bought a bike. I funded the bike through sales of games. I am slowly but surely getting rid of a big part of my collection... I would LOVE to pare it down by 80%.

I will still hold onto some things... we shall have to see what they are.

Good luck, sir!

I'd definitely be interested in seeing what Vic-20 stuff you had for sale. Good luck with your sales.

Good Luck with your sales..

I totally understand...

......For the past few years I've sold of parts of my gaming collection to buy expensive pocketbvikes to go race them ..and I'm having a BLAST...!!!!
Games that just sit on the shelf,in the closets, storage aren't ever going to be played....I'm getting good use out of the bikes though..

Me> I'd like to buy another Mini Motorcycle/Italian Pocketbike.... I found another I want for $1400.00...So I'm thinking of thinning out the herd again..
I gotta call Joe and see when he's in...
Thinking NES,SNES,PS games............but I need a push to do it..

I've sold/rebought/sold/rebought so many times... heh. Thing is... turns out that's what I enjoy doing so now I'm working on having my own shop. :)

It's all in what you enjoy and when it's time it's time... even if it's just a large scaledown (no one ever truly leaves... it gets in your blood ;) )

I've sold/rebought/sold/rebought so many times... heh.

Same, done that a few times too.

But it looks like one hobby is replacing the other. Bikes over games. :D

Good luck with the selling. Looking forward to the links.

I like how you put it: "let others enjoy them as you have."

Good luck on all your sells!

Thanks guys. I'll post a pic of the bike if I can and keep you posted as I start unpacking boxes.

OK I guess it worked lol.

OK, well I've started bringing up boxes and set up some test stations for setups. Here are some pics. I had to resize them considerably but you get the idea. I think this is about 1/2 so far.

You know, owning a bike and owning videogames aren't exclusive -- I have both, too! :) I was going to say something like, "well that's too bad," but all I will say is "follow your heart." You were one of the first "cool" people I talked to when joining DP and so when I see things like this it reminds me how much I've been inspired by others and the opportunity I have to inspire others.

If you have one, send me a list of your C64/Amiga stuff. I might be interesting in picking some/all of it up.

I might be interested in Amiga games, do you have a list of what you got?

And how about some pics of the bike! Seeing that I've almost killed myself multiple times on a bicycle, I choose to live my motorcycle experiences vicariously :)

There is one I uploaded a few post up. I'm going to see if my old photo bucket account works so I can upload a bunch more as I take them. If anyone knows a another great easy photo sharing site let me know. Thanks.

Fred, not that you need my approval or anyone else's, but you're doing the right thing. You've stored it, you've let it simmer and when you returned, it still didn't evoke any feelings of "I gotta hang onto this." Yup, it's definitely time to move it.

Good to hear you're downsizing about 80% or so, focusing only on the games you want to hang onto, and still visiting the odd game-related haunt or two. You don't have to close the door.

Not a good-bye... but more of... a see ya later

I like to provide a contrary opinion when I can.....

There is a sense that you are simply migrating to a knew hobby, which is well and good, but you should consider that you have also not settled on a hobby. As Flack said, these hobbies need not be exclusive. Simply needing space is not a reason to liquidate your games. I find that I need to reassert myself with my classic games; force myself to get back to them -- once I do it's a great time. Though as has been said, you can always start again, though is it as fun the next time?

Also note that a good collection has a great value, given that others have financed vehicles with the sale of their collection. Don't underestimate what an asset (monetarily) a collection is. It's like having stock -- even if it is in the closet.

Good Luck with your sales.

As far as investments go, video games are horrible unless you've bought everything at bargain prices and the games actually appreciate in value. Remember when the comic book and action figure markets crashed not too long ago?

Besides, if you're looking at your game collection as an asset, do you really want to deal with having to sell it when you do need money? What would even be the point of the collection, then, if you have it for the sake of being a financial safety net?

Nice looking bike, and best of luck on downsizing your collection.

I'd say its worth it very nice bike! I'd do the same in a heart beat (but for a car instead)

If your friends won't play classic games... Time to get new, older, friends. Creepy!

OK,

We actually started unpacking some stuff yesterday and my son wanted to take some pictures and practice with his camera. We unearthed the Vic 20, Jag, some boxed electronic games and a tiny amount of Astrocade items. Here is the link to the album if you would like to see them. There will be a lot more to follow.

That's cool that so many people here have bikes. I have a 2007 Honda VFR800 myself. I can second the opinion that games and bikes aren't exclusive. Living in Ohio, there's no way I can ride all year round. I need something to do when it snows :)

Having said that, I am also selling off a lot of my games in the near future. Don't worry Steven, I'm keeping all my Saturn stuff !

I hear that. We need to form some kind of DP ride or something. A week long journey to long lost arcades and various dives. OK they may be hard to find but it still sounds fun. while I am going to thin the collection by a huge chunk, a lot will be staying. Many of the standups (Tron, Discs of Tron, Rampart, Space Duel, Asteroids Deluxe, Star wars are staying as well as the beloved Dr. Who pinball. An 8bit Atari computer will stay as well as a C64 or 128. The Odyssey collection is still up in the air, but the Saturn collection will be going eventually. Oh and the CDX has to stay to in case a stray thrift finds of course :)
