This is a pretty cool idea for a contest, I don't remember it the last time it was around so I'll have to keep my ears peeled for it this time.

Ugh! I'm 99% sure I know what system this is for, but it's one of about 4 games, but I can't remember!

Hey gang!
Well, we have this month's winner! Say congrats to Andrew M Romo
who is this month's lucky winner! Andrew's correct entry of "Minestorm" (for the Vectrex system) was the one randomly drawn from the 17 correct entries we had this month. Andrew wins "Puzzle Quest" for the DS system. Congrats Andrew!
And stay tuned for a new Mystery Sound contest will be launching very soon!

I thought at first it was Omega Race, but I didn't really believe it,so I didn't send it in.I KNEW I had heard that sound before - at least I know I'm not totally crazy :)

Howdy gang!
Well, now that everyone knows the Mystery Sound game is back, we'll do away with the "Sticky" announcement and I'll just update this thread whenever we have a winner and when we have a new one running.
And speaking of a new one, this month's Digital Press Mystery Sound Game is posted! Listen to the sound, ID the game it comes from, and send in your guesses to our contest answer staff. This time, we'll have TWO lucky winners who will be drawn from all correct entries! (Full rules are posted to the Contest page. Read 'em!)
Think you know your video games? Take a listen and find out!

Argh! I now that game, and I remember the sound. However, I'd never have figured it out. Good choice on Minestorm!

08-24-2008, 06:48 PM
Well the new game has been up and running for one week now and guess how many entries there have been?
NONE.
No one has even emailed a bad guess. The inbox is empty. Just in case the initial announcement swept by everyone, I'll announce it again here:
The new August/September Mystery Sound contest is now live and running! This month, we're gonna have TWO winners! Have a listen, take a guess, and win a prize!

I know I for one haven't the slightest idea about this one, and cannot even make a bad guess. Maybe it's the sound of a cabinet's internal hard drive failing?

The mystery sound has been updated. The sound byte is longer now, and may now provide the important aural cue you need to identify it!

09-01-2008, 05:36 PM
I've listened to the clip about 100 times ... and while it's obvious that it's [a lot of game-spoiling clues cut out...]
EDIT BY SNIDERMAN: Ah, Frankie....you don't want to give others help now, do you? Please refrain from observations about what system(s) it could be or a description of the sound's possible source or "what it sounds like."
To the rest of you, the clip is now longer with more of the actual gameplay involved. And since NO ONE has gotten it yet, I'm allowing re-guesses from all who have guessed before.
Good luck gang!
Frankie_Says_Relax
09-01-2008, 09:07 PM
LOL, sorry!
I actually thought that my description was equal parts vague and/or obvious for anybody who had listened to the sound.
But you're right, just about anything could be considered a clue.
*just between you and me .... it's Mario 64, right?*

09-28-2008, 08:24 PM
Wow gang. Just...wow. This month's Mystery Sound must've been the toughest, hardest, most obscure one we've ever posted because we only had ** 3 ** correct entries! We have had very obscure sounds from little known games for the 3DO that have had more correct guesses!
Wow.
Well, for those who were wondering what the game is, here's the answer:
Fantastic Voyage for the Atari 2600. At the beginning of the contest, we only posted the little beginning musical "lilt", but no one seemed to get it (since it sounded like a car revving). So we made the clip longer, and encompassed more of the gameplay. If you listen, you can hear the "heart monitor" beeping as you shoot at the viruses in the opening piece of gameplay.
Since we have 3 correct entries, but only 2 prizes, I'm going to dip into my prize bin and try to find something to reward the third entry. So, the Mario Coins go to the two winners drawn at random:
RYAN HARPER AND JEFF BEEGLE
And the third person to get it right who will get a little somethin-somethin is...
JOHN HARKER
Congrats to this month's winners! I'll be posting a new game and prize sometime this week. Thanks!

And he deserves it after that ordeal in Transylvania.
(sorry John, I'm sure you've heard that one enough times, eh?)

We have a winner!
Unlike the last contest, this sound seems to have been a lot more recognizable to you folks as we had ** 25 ** correct entries that arrived before the deadline. And who is this month's lucky winner drawn at random? None other than MIKE MARKOWSKI who wins Final Fantasy III for the Nintendo DS. Mike was able to ID Haunted House for the Atari 2600! Congrats Mike!
A new mystery sound contest is in the works and will be posted soon. Thanks everyone!

Which is why I don't use a lot of sound tracks with spoken dialogue or sung lyrics. Too easy to punch the words in and see a transcription from the mystery game.

Well, THAT'S more like it. Normally we get 10-20 entries maximum for any Mystery Sound Contest. This time, we had 101 correct entries! Say congrats to Dan Okken who is this month's lucky winner! Dan's correct entry of "Portal" (for PC and Xbox 360 Orange Box - "Still Alive" song at the end) was the one randomly drawn from the 101 correct entries we had this month. Julian wins a DVD of the Super Mario Bros. movie. Congrats Dan!

Hey gang!
Well, we have a winner for the April/May contest! Thought this contest's sound was easier than last contest's, but we only had 15 correct entries this time. Color me very surprised.
Well, say "Congrats" to MICHAEL BACARELLA who was randomly drawn from all of the correct entries who guessed "Resident Evil" as this month's Mystery Sound. The music is from the original version, the incidental music when you first enter and begin exploring the mansion.
However, since I was unsure if the music had been "recycled" and used in other games of the RE series, I accepted ANY Resident Evil game as correct (So RE2, RE: CV, RE4, etc. were judged as correct). For what it's worth, Michael did identify the original game version. Mike wins Silent Hill: Origins for the PSP!
And stay tuned for another game to begin soon!

Wow, that was resident evil?
For some reason it sounded to me like Goldeneye or Banjo-Kazooie.
The sad part is, I've played those games inside and out.
