View Full Version : Reinventory Games

What is the easiest/fastest way that you guys reinventory your games?

I ask because I found out that I need to get off of the ign user page and use my own.

I was posting in a thread about which games I think I could beat others in, and started going through my game list, and one game I didn't think I had so I bought off of Brisco (it is still in the mail, I never add games until I have them) and it also says that I have Street Fighter 2 Arcade, and I don't own it.

Who knows what else is wrong. I will probably just write up a page in PHP to collect everything (I could get that written easily in like an hour or less).

You think I should write everything down on paper and trasition it, do it in excel and leave it. Basically, I am pretty sure I am asking on tips about taking inventory on a game collection close to 1000.

I printed out the DP lite pages. They have little check boxes for the game, instruction, and box. It works great, the only down side is the list can get big, depending on how many systems you collect for. I use to just carry around a single list with every game I own, but I needed something with all the games on it so I can put a mark by the game I "want" to buy.

I use excel. Although I don't update my game list too often.

I also use excel for my movie collection (both dvd and laserdisc). Works fine for me since I can sort anyway I want and add whatever columns I need. I do keep up this list since it is huge - about 8 or 9 times as big as my games list - and I more active on adding to that collection than the games.

My collection is pretty vague in terms of systems I collect for. There are only a couple systems that I just have a few games for and don't actively collect for (CD-I).

i write my games down in a notebook ><

I am assuming I will have to do the notebook method since all of my games are in my basement and my computer is upstairs. I have a linux box, but either way, since I decided to make a webpage, I would have to retype everything anyway.

Which does lead me to one other thing:
within the next couple days after I setup my online store for beta testing, I am going to write some stuff in php so that you can store your game collection. If anybody wants a username/password for it, let me know.

Also, what are some good features and stuff for this.

I know the basics, system, game, condition, comments, ability to add/edit/delete. Is there any other feature that would be cool for a game collection list? Maybe something like putting in non-system video games like plug-n-play and lcd games.

I am thinking maybe a picture that is linked from another webpage or something (I don't know).

But if there is something simpler than the notebook method, please let me know, because this is going to take a long time as it is.

Well the fastest way to reinventory stuff would be to copy/paste it out of IGN and fix the breaks and everything else that would show up when pasted into word.

If you're starting from scratch, it'll be a personal preference for what to use. And if you're going to make your own little program on your page, make it simple. The more convoluted that you make things to have to enter and add to (reviews and that crap) the less likely its going to be used, unless you were a heavy user of those features previously. Not to mention the fact that it'll take way longer to enter that stuff onto your page in the first place.

Good luck with whatever you choose to do, as none of the options will be all that fast.

I think I should start from scratch. I kinda need to. I have done deals/trades/sales and not updated my ign page. This will also give me the ability (if I am writing this myself) to add stuff that IGN does not have, like r-zone and plug-n-play, seeing as they are video games.

I will probably make a user interface pretty simple now:
Game title[type it in]
System[choice from a drop down] (if it doesn exist, you can add the system)
Drop down choices Complete/Box+Instr/Instr/Loose
Drop Down choices Bad/Mediocre/Minty
Comments[type it in]

something along those lines, and anything can be skipped. if i just wanted to type in the names super quick and that was it, i have the choice to do that. The reason why I would make it so that system is in a drop down, is if it is in my database, then I can allow for organization through clicking on a system.

Possibly even user stats as well. Maybe the % of people who collect for Atari 2600 or something. Maybe the % of all collections that are Genesis.

Now this is going to be tailored around me, but I can easily give out account to this, because in order for mine to be online based, I kinda need to set that up (because manually entering everything into a database would suck).

I will end up writing this within the next couple days, so when I am done, I will start reinventory (somehow) and then if anybody likes this, you could use it if you wanted. Why not? If not, no big deal. I just love web-based everything (and yes, I order my groceries online as well).

I use an excel spreadsheet to keep track by system and have pages on my own hosting and on RFGeneration for also keeping track. As long as those lists mostly agree I seem to have everything up to date. :)

Yeps, that is why I want to stick to just one list, or else I will always be comparing to see which list is the current one.

I did this exact thing like 6 months ago and couldn't be happier with how it turned out. I printed off my whole IGN list (which was fairly inaccurate), made sure my games were alphabetized, and simply inventoried everything I had by running down the list. I ended up adding approximately 60 games to my list that weren't in IGN. My excel spreadsheet is so much easier to maintain and I am able to cut and paste stuff for fun side projects.

I installed Microsoft Access and fiddled around with it a bit to create something similar for my CD collection today. It works, but it's quite crude, and I'm not familiar enough with Excel to know how to make an inventory / checklist with it. We never got MS Office classes when I was in college. :\

Well in the next couple days, you would be the type of person that could benefit from the site I am going to write.

Simple, but effective.

I'd prefer a Windows program, to be honest. Nothing wrong with websites, but they're just not my thing.

GameCollector.

There is also a program called Readerware that I have been thinking about using. It does not specifically support Video Games, but it does DVD/Movies so you can create a database and just customize the fields. It will import data from a number of sites, but not enough. GameCollcetor is the best choice unless you are an Excel wizard...

Problem! It's not -free-. I'd rather use a freeware or donationware tool. :(

Wow, who knew that it would suck so bad inventorying games.

It is fun though. I got all of my games on my main floor, which is pretty much 360 and pc, with a few stragglers here and there.

Check it out and let me know what you think. Good enough system for this?

And yes, it is taking way longer because I am saying what the condition and price are as long as I can find the information.
