This is something I've been waiting for sense I was waiting 12 hours for my Amiga 1000 to ray trace a 320x240 image of a crystal ball and wine glass on a table!\\^_^/
Ray Tracing in video games is starting to get buzz that it could be only years away.

If you want to torture your computer to see how fast it can trace a scene I suggest the POV-ray benchmark (http://www.povray.org/download/benchmark.php).
Some POV-ray artwork (http://www.povray.org/community/hof/). It's my favorite open source ray tracer!

I have been hearing this for YEARS. Raytracing for 3d game rendering only a few years away. My official guess at this point, its NEVER going to happen. I for one could care less at this point as texturing and lighting continue to improve the benefits of using a ray tracing system continue to diminish.

Ray tracing doesn't have to replace DirectX 10 or OpenGL. It would be nice as an option for developers though.

I give it about 2 more generations before we even see an attempt at real-time ray tracing.

in the past, it hasn't really been practical. I've seen quite a bit of work on it lately to try to take "shortcuts" to make frames render faster. With the amount of effort being put into it, i find it hard to believe it's a gimmick at this point.

I'd rather have flying cars.

It'll happen eventually. Real time ray tracing can probally be done now on a fast enough computer(s) if you restrict what you can do. Not quite as good as the above image mind you but still pretty good. The thing is, once computers get to point where they can handle it, they'd still need to handle CPU hogging AI and all that other stuff to make a game of it.

It will always be slower than than the smoke and mirrors lighting techniques that are currently used, but it's only a matter of time before developers run out of things to do with ever increasing computational power.
I wonder if anything at all would currently be playable with ray-tracing.
I'd love to see what Virtua Fighter or Virtua Racing would look like with ray-traced graphics.

I haven't died and been to heaven, but I am pretty sure that is what Virtua Figher will look like to me
