RULES!
I'm just now playing the original for the first time (never played any PS game, including PSO), and its really really good.
It really lets you roam around a lot and get into trouble very early on, rather than forcing you on a linear path. The "3D" dungeons are incredible for a MS game!
(I'm playing the GBA version, but I assume the master system original was the same)
It seems so much more advanced than Final Fantasy I.

The GBA version? or the original? I've played the GBA version a few times (never got into it) and it kept my saves just fine.

Hm, I guess I'll have to save multiple slots then. Good lookin' out.
And yeah, it's the GBA "Phantasy Star Collection" version.

There's a trick to avoiding the save game bug... anybody remember it? I thought it had something to do with not saving near the end of the music loop, or something like that.

They mean the GBA port. There was somekind of bug that would corrupt or lose saves. It never happened to me, but considering how hard PS is I can see why the possiblilty became as big an issue as it did.
PS is my favorite RPG. We used to refer to it as 'The Game', and the playing of it was responsible for the destruction of at least one dinner. I think it still holds its own graphically.
I second the some of PS2's dungeons will send you crying into the corner without a hint guide, but they can be done. There's a few in PS that'll do that too, but they're nothing to PS2's 'skure dungeon' or that 'pit dungeon'.
One thing I love about PS and PS2, at least, is that if a dungeon spans an area (like a tunnel), if you have any idea what direction the 'out' should be within the gamespace, going that way will accutally get you out.

One of the funny things about Phantasy Star is that the learning curve is easily outsmarted. If you really take your time towards the beginning of the game, and make a point of leveling up and saving enough money to buy the advanced armor and weaponry available at the time, you can just zoom through the second half of the game. It's easy to get ahead. I think that's part of what makes it a fun and rewarding game, not just some eye candy with a stellar presentation.

Phantasy Star is imho the greatest 8-bit RPG of them all. I have never played the gba version but I have also heard that it crashes. Trust me I don't think you will be disappointed at all.

The trick to making almost every dungeon in ps super easy, follow the left wall and you will eventually run into every single treasure and then the dungeon exit, theres two dungeons it doens't work in as theres a big circle that you'll end up looping in, but its pretty easy to figure those two dungeons out. I recently replayed the game on my ds (yay for emulaotrs no stupid save bug!) without needing any maps using that teqqnique.

I love the original Phantasy Star.. and my biggest dissapointment with PS2 when it came out was that they did away with the 3D dungeons. Was I the only person who was aghast and couldn't believe they did that? :grrr: Oh well.. old water under the bridge I guess. My thought at the time though was "How can it be Phantasy Star without the 3d???" But PS has obviously grown much beyond that by now..
But yeah, dont play the GBA version. Play it an emu or better yet, an SMS.
Speaking of old RPG's I've been havng a blast playing through SMS Ys again :)

I used to have the GBA version, but sold it after my save went corrupt (I'm eventually going to buy a Power Base Converter and an original copy of PS so I play it on my Genesis).
I like the series, and each of the different sub-series for different reasons (The original 4 Phantasy Star games for their epic storyline, PSO for the strangly addicting gameplay, and PSU for making a great coaster for my drinks)

Agreed, those tunes up the quality considerably. Still waiting for an English translation....
Does anyone know of any other MS games that use the FM Chip?

I'll likely finally play this next time I hook my DC up with one my rom discs. Messed around with it at times, enjoyed the story and the grahpics. 3D mazes took getting used to after not playing any fps for some time. A worthy rpg for all.

There is a modboard now being sold via a member of the forums at SMSpower.org that connects to the expansion port on the back of your SMS with the FM sound chip. Highly recommended! Solder-in versions available for SMS2 models.

You guys should play the re-translation I worked on:
http://www.smspower.org/translations/phantasystar-en/
FM sound, capital and lowercase letters, and a vastly improved script (not straight up, ugly-sounding direct Japanese like most other retranslations, I actually made the characters come alive and gave some more depth to the world, based on official docs).
I can't play the original anymore.

...follow the left wall....
That's a really old tac that works well with mazes, since the right-handed majority tends to go right.

Its always worked for me, (i'm left handed go figure) didn't work so well on the ultima games, but most dungeon crawlers it eventualy got me to the end and most treasures.

looking at the screenshots there,, "odin" has 255 magic point, is it a strict translation or did you tweak stats/levleups at all?

I guess you could do that.. Although to me it was a lot of fun mapping the PS1 dungeons out on graph paper :p

Oh, that's my "cheat build" to get through it quicker, for testing the dialog.
