View Full Version : Final Fantasy VI Label Variation? [Bootleg]

Long story short, I bought FFVI Advance for myself, and lent it to a friend, who was a fanatic and played the game until he was convinced it belonged to him. Far be it from me to keep an addict from his muse, I told him he could have it (and his elite save file) as long as he bought me another copy on eBay. He did so, and gave me a copy that he bought, and that played like the FFVI I knew.

HOWEVER

On the label of the newly bought GBA game,

Instead of a plain FFVI Magitek label, there are three super-deformed characters below the logo, including:

Edward Bard, followed by
Rosa White Mage, followed by
Rydia Summoner

Now, these are characters from FFIV, so what are they doing on the label for a GBA version of FFVI?!

Has anyone else seen this label variation? Do I have a poorly-researched label variation, or a bootleg, on my hands? please advise.

Sounds like a bootleg to me. Bootleg GBA games are very common on eBay.

Of course, I could be wrong.

I'm ok with a bootleg, as long as the game plays decently and doesn't crap out on the save file. However, should I be worried that my 40+ hours of gameplay will dissapear at some point due to shoddy pirate workmanship? I will try to provide a pic of the cart in my next post.

Yes, you should be worried. Bootleg games fail very quickly. Contact that buyer and tell him to give you a refund.

i've seen the very same bootleg, and the batteries tend to not be soddered to the boards properly so one good nudge and it'll pop off and or start to leak.

Can you snap a pic and post it here?

Is it a bootleg or from a different region?

edit: I found this thread (http://www.gamespot.com/gba/rpg/finalfantasyviadvance/show_msgs.php?topic_id=m-1-41487136&pid=930370&page=0) at the Gamespot Forums, it's pretty clear that yours is a bootleg. If its the same as this image, it's not from a different region since its got the ESRB rating.

Here is a really crappy image of what the bootleg looks like. It's from that GS thread:

I find it funny that they couldn't even get the characters from the correct game :)

Yes that is exactly what it looks like! He paid $24 bucks for it (shipped) on eBay. Man, what a rip-off. You know, it's sad but the label is printed on high quality glossy paper, just like a real label would be, and the logo is just as clear and sharp as the real thing. If they hadn't tried to spruce it up with characters from the wrong game I would have never known the difference. Thanks for the help, guys, and especially for finding the pic, coldbeer!

I just received a copy of this bootleg...from a seller on Amazon. Which is ironic because everyone always says, "Don't use Ebay, use Amazon!" because of most sellers not selling bootleg.

The first thing I noticed when I pulled it out of the box were the characters, and I thought...no way would Nintendo/SE be that stupid. The label serial number reads AGB-BKWE-USA and the back of the cart has a Nintendo logo, "Made in Japan" and Model No. AGB-033.

It plays fine, but I'm not sure if I want to risk it. I have lost FFVI save files twice in my life and I don't want to do it again only to have my file ruined. I will be contacting the seller shortly, and see what happens.
