I'm not sure of Sony's reasoning behind the discontiunuation of the extended life battery pack (http://www.pspfanboy.com/2008/08/08/psp-extended-life-battery-kit-is-discontinued/), unless there's going to be a new version that's the same size as a normal slim battery?

I don't know ... probably further evidence that they're moving on to another hardware revision.
As an extended battery life user it does wonderful things for the per-charge battery-life of the PSP ... however you won't be able to use your PSP-2000 in ANY and I do mean ANY 3rd party device like a movie stand, charge cradle, hand-grip, rubber system skin, etc. etc.
Which really pisses me off because I have a great combination composite/component/s-video video output stand with a remote control for movie viewing that I can't use without swapping out the batteries and battery door cover!!

I would guess it wasn't selling well, given that they wanted over $40 for it, and you could get the extended cover on the net shipped for $3.00. Plus, with the discontinuation of the fat PSP, the extended batteries were on clearance everywhere. There were a ton marked $16.96 at the local TRUs, and I found a pair for just $4.00 each at a Kmart.

Though, the extended life battery isn't the same as the standard fat PSP battery. The extended battery runs at 2200 mAh and adds about 40% play time to both the slim and fat PSPs in optimal settings.

I just bought a Sony "Stamina" 3.6v 2200mAh battery on clearance at TRU yesterday but it doesn't say anything about being PSP-2000 compatible on the package. Is this the same battery that's being discontinued or is it totally different?

Check your box, it should have come with two over-sized battery covers that only fit the PSP-2000 (slim). A silver and a black. (Check the above link and you'll see the box which shows both model PSPs in the lower left corner.)

Here's what mine looks like:

I guess I've got the older fat battery then. Looks exactly the same as the slim battery though. Says "Up to 20% increased capacity compared to PSP-11U" on back. Are these the same specs on the PSP-2000 battery, or does it have less juice?

Hmmmmmm .... same battery from what I can tell, if you have a PSP Slim, just buy the larger cover on eBay or an import site, they run like $4 or so.
