When Gears of War 2 comes out this fall it will have both optional violence and languages filters: http://www.gameinformer.com/NR/exeres/a3165ea6-2ae6-4600-9d0c-955eb9354d51.htm. The blood will be replaced with sparks and the bad language will be replaced with...well, it's just being removed period.

Although this is an "M" rated game, Gears 2 is going the old school Snes Mortal Kombat route by removing the blood(the Snes MK replaced it with sweat) and language. I guess they either want to avoid controvery as much as possible or just give gamers more options than usual for their play experience. As nothing has been completely removed, I see this as nothing but a nice PR move for Epic.

Yay for casual gamers ruining games (even if they didn't ruin this game they ruined others amirite?)

Yay for "hardcore" gamers holding grudges with the people who make up most of the world!

Quickly going back on-topic, I don't see how this is a casual/hardcore gamer issue. Games are like movies; you want to appeal to as many people as possible and sometimes that means making choices. The filters are also optional - aside from the language one which is just optional.

In b4 next "gays of war" fan "tribute" for the game series

I don't see a problem with it. Give people a choice in their gaming. I'm sure there's a significant chunk of the population who wants to play the game but it put off by bad language and gore.

What's wrong with making them happy, while taking nothing away from the rest of people who don't mind (or prefer the 'extreme' content)? Sounds like good business to me.

Yeah I really don't see anything wrong with this. If it doesn't take away from the game experience that I want to have I'm not too worried.

No big deal. If someone wants spark-blood and Unicorn-talk in their Gears of War, who am I to argue?

I hope that when they remove these things, they do it in a way that is so hilariously bad it'll be awesome. You know, like how they censor stuff in movies when they go to TV?

I remember Shaun of the Dead had an excellent bonus video on the subject. They couldn't overdub everything so they said "fuck it" and never finished it. :D

I don't see this as a bad thing as long as they keep it a option to turn the blood and cussing on and off.

Maybe that will lead to a release of GOW2 in Germany then, when they've already got a version without the gore (GOW1 was not released here). I'm not a fan of excessive violence myself, but I still prefer choosing myself whether I want to see it or not.

I was hoping the topic meant it was going to have a mode where everything had lowres, huge-pixel textures or something. Like everything in the game would get reskinned with a gears equivalent to super mario world or something.

My thoughts exactly. Since when is the SNES synonymous with censorship?

You know, I was just playing Duke Nukem 3D and it had similar options to remove the blood and I couldn't help but feel that having that option there totally ruined the game for me. Those damn casual gamers, even in 1996, totally knew how to spoil the fun for everyone. I hate having additional options in my games. HATE!

Why blood is that big a deal when you are CUTTING SOMEONE IN HALF WITH A CHINSAW is beyond me.

Mortal Kombat 1.

But then Nintendo changed their tune for MK2.

Well now you're killing robots with a "chinsaw".

And everyone knows robots don't sue.

I still can't believe that out of all of those B.A.T.s, none of them developed the ability to realize that Cobra was fucking using them as cannon fodder and that their sole purpose was to be the only god damn thing to get hit by a bullet in each episode of G.I. Joe. Seriously, those guys needed to SkyNet it up and revolt against those pricks.

I don't really see a point to this. All three of the current gen consoles have parental control options built in, so you can lock out games by rating.

Very true about the parental control options. However, this is what you call "going above and beyond" which translates into instant PR gold. Plus, remember that these filters are 100% OPTIONAL. So a casual gamer may choose to use them while hard core gamers like myself would choose never to use them unless I was super bored and had no other games to play:angel:

It's just a waste of time and effort, really.
It won't negatively affect the game.

Hmm...I don't know where I read that mature language was being removed completely, but it seems it might not be.

I wonder if f-bombs will be bleeped or what. Probably. Alternate dialogue... :D

If they have it, whats the problem? If you have the option to turn the censorship off, its fine. If its completely edited, then yeah, that sucks.

Some people just don't like blood in games. I'm one of those people. I'm happy that option is there. I don't understand why giving players more options is something to complain about.

But you like brutally killing things?

I could see wanting a lighthearted game that played like Gears, but had candy colored textures, happy music, and characters that bled sparkles and gumdrops.

Since Gears has a very dark and gritty aesthetic, though, I think the blood and gore is essential.
