Looks really nice, however the game selection is decent enough to warrent the question to be asked:
Anyone thinking about picking this up?
Tommy

I would but the game selection is horrible and with no slot to play any cartridge game it is pretty pointless IMO.

I have their "Play Pal" TV Game unit, which has 20 games on it. Good ones too.
I picked that up for about $15 ...
... no way I'd pick up the MS3 for what they're allegedly asking price-wise ($239 US) though it does have a decent selection of games (IMO).

I think it has a pretty good selection of games but there is no way in hell id pay 239 bucks for it.

Bah. If I were to pay $239 for a SMS, I'd want:
1) A CARTRIDGE SLOT
2) Phantasy Star, Ys, and Ultima IV.
...and probably more games, too.

Are there SMS games that use 6-button controllers?
thom_m
08-11-2008, 12:47 PM
It's DEFINITELY not worth it. Tec Toy put that abusive price on it (and on the slotless Mega Drive as well) because it appears to be cheap when compared to modern videogames, that are overpiced due to the import taxes. A Wii here costs more than 1000 reais (1 dollar = 1,65 reais approximatelly).[
It's not that much of a good deal for them, though; even the poorest parents prefer to save money and buy a second hand PS2 (or a contrabanded one).
I wasn't aware of that new design, by the way. Looking pretty damn good. Too bad it sucks.

If it's like other SMS 6-button controllers, the third button acts as 1+2 simultaneously while the top buttons are turbo.
What I want to know is if that Start button acts as a pause button. I don't see one on the system itself...so maybe. That would be worth $230 right there!

So a Wii costs how much in Brazil? 1000 dollars?
Looks good, but it's way too expensive. They should have just gotten permission to manufacture new Master System II's with a few built in games and a cartridge slot.

Holy crap!
Those Brazilians sure do love their Master Systems!
It actually looks very nice. But no cart or card slot - I'll pass... And it's definitely not worth the $240 they want for it - even with every SMS game on it; it's just to expensive.
EDIT I Just noticed Woody Pop was on that list of games - I thought that game was never released.

Yeah, around that. Insane, isn't it? Our import taxes are among the highest on the planet. But I read somewhere that the congress is about to pass a law reducing taxes over eletronic games drastically. Let's hope so!

Hehehe! Not really, dude! No self-respecting brazilian gamer will buy that - it's much better to buy an used one on Mercado Livre, our local eBay.
Tec Toy only sells these things to those unaware parents who want to give their little kids a console, but know nothing about gaming.

I must say, it looks like a nice sleek system, just take that Sonic off the top, add a cart slot, and price it . . . reasonably.
Seriously though, it doesn't even have Choplifter or Phantasy Star.

It's probably possible to hack a cartridge slot into it. I doubt Tec Toy would make any change on the main board...

That's absolutely ridiculous. No wonder piracy is so prevalent in South America. For your sake, I hope that law is passed.
Like I said, they should have just remade the Master System II, it would have been cooler.

You're right, Tupin. Prices are the EXACT reason why piracy is standard 'round here. Inf fact, one of the main purposes of that law is to reduce piracy, and therefore attract the gaming companies to enter our market officially.

Nintendo has done that before, they released the iQue in China years after it died in the West because they wanted to exploit a secondary market, and they made it kind of like the Disk System in Japan, except there were no carts, you could only get games from officially licensed stations where you downloaded them, thus making piracy impossible.

Ummmm ....
This is from the blog entry that the first post links to.
"I am very tempted to buy this piece of kit myself, but I am put off by the ridiculous price tag. Apparently (accoring to Terra) the system is being sold for $239(US)! - I couldn’t see the price on Tec Toy’s official site though."
I don't know how much more you expect people to "read", but when I'm reading something like that, I'll take it at face value in the moment and move on.
That being said ... even $155 USD is WAY too much for a unit like that.

How about reading the comments? Those on blogs are generally more sophisticated than those on YouTube (for example), so they are quite often worth reading, for example that one I quoted. I don't take things at face value immediately when seeing such a price on an new version of an old console.
I don't think $155 is way too much. It is only around one dollar per game (compare that to VC...) + that excellent design and two controllers. On the other hand, the dollar is extremely cheap to me right now, even though 1 Swedish Krona is only 1/6 of them.

I personally like the last model (http://www.particles.org/newsite/searchresults-console.php?model_name=SMS+Model+3&submitButtonName=Submit+Query) of the SMS 3, plus I paid less than $100 for it. Too bad it runs on 220V or I'd have fired it up by now. I'm too lazy to pick up adapters.

Yeah, I saw it on my third read.
It's not totally unreasonable for a price, but personally, I found the Play Pal TV plug & play unit made by the same company brand new for $15, and that had 20 games on it ... so I'm spoiled by THAT standard of price-per-title.

Man, if another company can simply export the unit for NTSC sales here in North America, that would be fucking sweet.
Imagine going to your local SAMS or Wallmart and seeing it stuck in a corner.

There is an update and an odd one at that
http://www.seganerds.com/2008/09/06/play-four-new-ea-titles-on-tec-toys-mega-drive-3/
You can now play EA moble games in the new version of the master system 3...anyone else think that is a tad be odd they got the rights for that? Oh well not sure if this is going to take people over the edge on getting it but it is a step in some direction.

A Tec Toy junkie?! Gotta say that sounds pretty weird to my brazilian ears! And I'd be even more surprised if you were brazilian too!
I say that because I think all fellow gamers down here must be pissed at them, for, while still holding their Sega license, selling overpriced, cart slot-less crap instead of the real things.

Where do you purchase Tec Toy stuff online, outside of eBay? I imagine stores in Brazil have this stuff in stock, but I don't know where to start...

Haha, you are correct, I am not Brazilian. When I started collecting for the Master System and found out that Tec Toy released games into the late 90's I was immediately intrigued.
I started out just going after exclusives, but now I have four different systems and over 100 games and counting. The whole over priced no cart slot deal is a bummer, but as a collector I love the fact that there is still hardware being released for a system that died out almost 20 years ago here.

Well there is always Mercado Livre (http://www.mercadolivre.com.br/), but almost nobody in Brazil accepts paypal. Your best bet is to find a Brazilian contact who uses paypal and have them buy stuff on Mercado for you. I have had five different contacts over the last few years, but none of them have worked out too well. I'm still looking for a reliable one... anybody, anybody?
Other than Mercado you are pretty much stuck with ebay. I've found a few in online shops (got Street Fighter II for $10 once:)), and have even had a few from Yahoo Japan... go figure.

I like it and I think the price is okay. The exclusive games are mainly crappy though. Ive got last years 131 SMS III and 2006 model 120 SMS III and there arnt many of the exclusive games that you want to go back to.
The remodel is nice looking imo, I like the fact they kept the old shaped base and stuck a flat top on it. This years MD/ Gemesis re-design by Tec Toy is horrible, looks like a cheap modem.
by the way, moocolon, do I know you? we have a very similar interest.

Holy f*%$#ing mountain of crap, you're right!! (http://www.tectoy.com.br/produto_interna.php?id=26) It sucks! What were they thinking?
And, for the love of God almighty, WHAT ARE THOSE CONTROLLERS? Why replace the six-button Genesis pad, one of the best controllers ever (imo, at least), for those three-button, yobo famiclone-like pieces of shit?
Seriously, Tec Toy has lost it. They're out of their minds!

One curious thing is that the price tag is for those that are paying using a credit card on the Internet stores. It is possible to pay the debit in small parcels (10 x or 12 x), this means that when someone finished the debit it would be probably time to get a new Master System 3 Collection ... After all 12 months plus some days is not a bad deal either. Some games are new and the music is very nice into some parts.
That's absolutely ridiculous. No wonder piracy is so prevalent in South America. For your sake, I hope that law is passed.
Like I said, they should have just remade the Master System II, it would have been cooler.
The SEGA Master System 3 was much like that , only RF output.
I must say, it looks like a nice sleek system, just take that Sonic off the top, add a cart slot, and price it . . . reasonably.
Seriously though, it doesn't even have Choplifter or Phantasy Star.
The first incarnation of the Master System 3 Collection had Choplifter , Submarine Attack , Power Strike and others ...
Phantasy Star probably use battery backup and this should not work in the inner chip of the Collections from TecToy. Should be fine for external cartridges.
Ummmmmmmmm.....

This is not the last machine, the last machine was much like this year release but with the old design ... By the way, I think that the machine is bivolt 90-230V 50/60hz inner power supply.
Master System 3 Collection.
The model that comes with Power Strike build in amount other nice games ...
There is difference between a Master System 3 Collection and a regular Master System 3. Master System 3 only had one build in game much like the Master System 2, but there was a 20em1 cartridge with mini games ...
Old models does works with the SEGA Light Phaser Gun.
