question for rpg fans

currently own a snes and a megadrive and have only ever played two rpgs - zelda and light crusader which barring a couple of tricky puzzles in LC - I completed quite easily, i Have been buying up a lot of rpgs for both consoles, which one would you recommend i play next. i take it there is a major difference between the action rpgs i have been playing and turn based ones?

I'm just wondering why you were sinking money into so many RPGs when you have only really played two?

Secret of Mana would probably be one of the better "transition" games based on the two you've played before. FF3/CT if you're up to menus.

Chrono Trigger. ASAP. My third favorite game on the SNES (behind Super Metroid and Super Mario World).

It's turn based, but a great choice for first-timers.

I would say Final Fantasy Mystic Quest then Super Mario RPG. Both are menu based and aren't that difficult to learn/beat, then I would go with Final Fantasy 3 and Chrono Trigger.

ive actually managed to make money and purchase almost 100 snes games over the last three months, by buying and selling on ebay, currently collecting the best 200 games for the snes to go with my megadrive collection

for the MD:
Phantasy Star 4 & Shining Force 1 & 2.
PS4 is turn-based. Magic names are weird, but once you get the hang of them, it's pretty sweet. SF is a turn-based strategy RPG, and they're both great ways to occupy some time. Cosmetically, SF2 is far superior to SF1, but they have very similar gameplay otherwise.
Also, I cannot recommend Landstalker enough! It's an excellent isometric Action RPG with some tricky puzzles and tough dungeons.
Crusader of Centy is basically as close as Zelda clones get on the MD, but it's pretty short and could probably be beaten in 6 hours or less.
Those are my picks, at least.

From the list of what you have...Final Fantasy III followed by Chrono Trigger for RPGs. For the Genesis, those are all fairly weak games. PS3 is the weakest of the series. It's ok, but not on the level of FF3 and CT.

There IS a big difference between action and turn based. IMO Light Crusader isn't really an RPG, nor is Zelda. They're more adventure games. If you prefer that to menus, go find Landstalker like someone said...you'll love it. or Wonder Boy in Monster World (both for Genesis). There's a lot of that kind of stuff that's very good...most people don't classify em as RPGs though.

If you are gonna start traditional RPGs though...start with FF3. AMAZING story...fairly linear, solid gameplay, not too complex. Easily my favorite game of all time, hands down.

Chrono Trigger must be played first. I'd recommend playing Final Fantasy VI and Secret of Mana after that.

Tough choice there are some good games in that list. I'd say go with chrono trigger its just that great of a game that it skips to the top of almost any list. Close second is final fantasy 3 which is another brilliant game. Just got light crusader myself can't wait to give it a whirl looks pretty awesome.

All good suggestions, but I to believe Landstalker should be next for you. Not because it is the best but because it is more like what you have played. It is an amazing game...

Of those I'd go with FF3. It's a terrific game that's, IMHO, is about as perfect an example of a traditional JRPG as there is. Chrono's also an excellent game, but I think that FF3 would tell you if you really like the genre or not.

Secret of Mana is also pretty good, but it's more of an action RPG. Not that that's a bad thing. I've personally had issues with the game being buggy (ie characters getting stuck in the walls). Evermore's like a poor Mana clone.

I'm not a terribly big fan of Mystic Quest. It's not like RPGs are terribly difficult; they just require time.

The MD games you have aren't the greatest, although I'm partial to PS3. Vermillion, if I remember correctly, is one of the Genny games that almost requires the hint guide that came with it. There's also a particular bar were you can get stuck, since you can't push/walkthrough NPCs. The biggest problem with Genny RPGs is that they tend to be grinders, with little payoff (unless you're really into the genre.)

You should look into the Shining Force games (SRPGS, but still fun). PS2, and PS4.

Final Fantasy III (or VI as it was known in Japan and on the PS1 remakes) is easily one of the best FF games out there. The opera scene is worth it alone (never did I nor my college roommates laugh so hard at something so odd in a video game back then).
