View Full Version : Miyamoto Banned From Discussing Hobbies

It was bound to happen sooner or later. Shigeru Miyamoto has always been very open about his hobbies and interest that have led to such classic franchises like Zelda, Pikmin and Nintendogs. Well it appears now that Nintendo wants him to be alittle less vocal: http://www.gamepro.com/news.cfm?article_id=206482.
I think it's kind of funny, but then again, his games have gone on to make billions for Nintendo. However, even if Nintendo's competitors had any idea of what he was cooking next--theres no way they'd be able to execute it as perfectly as he does. Theres a reason why theres only one Shigeru Miyamoto and thats because he is the man:king:

Seems pretty silly. With as much money as Shigeru has made them, he should be allowed to say whatever the heck he wants, as long as it isn't slanderous.
I'd love to see another developer hear Shiggy liked to wander his garden and come up with Zelda from that.
There's a long way to go from something he does as a hobby to turning it into a revolutionary and/or million dollar game franchise

Wonder if he's working on a new banjo sim to compete with Guitar Hero?

"Super Curling Brothers" - All your favorite Nintendo characters (and that loser Waluigi) battling it out in teh exciting game of curling in hopes of becoming the Nintendo Curling Champion!
The Big N could whip that out in time for the 2010 winter Olympics.

- He used to explore a cave when he was a kid so he turned that into Zelda
- He was watching ants bulding their homes and carrying things then created Pikmin
- He loved the little family dog he bought and had the idea for Nintendogs
- He's trying to keep in shape which gave him the idea for Wii Fit
- He likes to create music and decided it would be nice if there was a game where you could do that with many instruments (not play along to something but create your own) - Wii Music
I don't know of any hobby that gave him the idea for Mario. Any others to add to this list?

He used to be fat and dress in italian suits, so after his toilet overflowed and ruined the suit, he made Mario.

:?, wow that does seem a little harsh but after reading the statement, I guess they are just protecting their investment.

kinda makes sense. At least he still has hobbies and time for them.

Sounds like something my little brother would say in one of his hyperactive talking nasty while he flails around like he has boneitis moments.

Just remember to take this news with a grain of salt.. It's all "alleged" and "reported" from an anonymous source.

I don't get it. Do his hobbies include pedophilia and cross-dressing or something? Why aren't they letting him discuss his hobbies?

To keep competitors from quickly releasing a crappy version of what Nintendo may be making.

Lame. If I were him I'd start my own gaming company. He'd Pwn. I think he's a bit more old-school Japanese, though. He'd have to make a terrible flop like Yokoi's Virtual Boy for him to do that.

It's funny, someone once did an analysis of western RPGs vs. JRPGs (can't remember where off the top of my head, and didn't bookmark it) - one of the deciding differences, they noted, was the idea of "open-ended" quests and adventure vs. the linear, "train-track," no-options stories of JRPGs.
There was something in there about how, in games where the choice was very wide-open, the Japanese sometimes got very uncomfortable with it - instead of finding it freeing, it seemed more terrifying.
Going off and starting one's own company is very open-ended. I think you are correct, rbudrick, in assessing Miyamoto as a traditional Japanese employee. Maybe he thinks he'll lose too many experience points and too much gold if he changes character classes.

I love the freedom to choose which mission to do first and the ability to explore in Oblivion (and probably will love Fallout 3) but if, for example, in a game there are two paths to choose, I wouldn't like to make that decision myself because I don't know the negatives and benefits of each so I get a nervous feeling. I also don't like BioWare's games because of the 3 conversation choices you are usually given after each sentence a NPC says because I don't exactly know what I will gain or lose, besides Paragon or Renegade points, for each choice. Maybe that character will like or hate me more, or maybe they will give me an item if I select a certain reply (this mostly applies to other games).
I'm one of those people that has to know every detail about something before I can make a decision I feel comfortable with so I guess I prefer a linear RPG. If it's an action game though, I prefer to be in more open areas like the Ratchet and Clank series.

Miyamoto and Yu Suzuki should get together and create something new and marvelous.
He used to be fat and dress in italian suits, so after his toilet overflowed and ruined the suit, he made Mario.
Mario was originally a carpenter, not a plumber. ;)
I guess his brother convinced him to change professions.

Yup, he did.
Actually, Miyamoto did not give Mario his name. Mario's original name was Jumpman.
However, someone at Nintendo of America (maybe Arakawa?) renamed Jumpman with a more "real"-sounding name, based on Mario Segali, the landlord of NoA's first location in New York.

Ah, yeah...I see...
Hah! Can you imagine the kind of lame cross-dressing game the competition would some up with? Psh. Only Miyamoto has the true soul of a transvestite.

Most Nintendo fans know that but did any of the ideas for the game come from one of his hobbies?

I doubt it. He did say that originally he wanted it to be a Popeye game but that Nintendo couldn't get the rights at the time. So, unless you count animation as an interest, I'd say no.

Yes. I wonder if he has a MySpace account.
Sort of joking.
Seriously, why has a picture of Segali never been shown? I mean, he is supposedly the likeness of the the most iconic videogame figure in the known universe. That's kind of weird when you think about it.

Maybe because the character got so famous Nintendo could sue Segali for copyright infringement?
I mean, just look at him.

I can see it now - dozens of developers/publishers are now falling all over themselves on how to make a game where you get to print your own money in order to afford the time to exercise in a garden stroll by stomping ants and petting dogs...
