View Full Version : The Devil in the Jaguar

There is something I always wondered...it was relating to Atari Jaguar games.

Why is it that many of the games had demonic/satanic themes in them? Either it be symbolism or references, it was as though it was a fad at one time.

If memory serves me right, games like Katsumi Ninja and Ultra Vortek were full of them.

My question is...WHY? Did Atari actually believe that having said references meant more money or a "cooler" attitude?

What gives?

I forget what system it was for. Pretty sure it was in the 80s there was a picture of a family sitting around playing whatever console or 8-bit home computer and the little boy looked possessed as all hell. I'll have to try to dig it up i probably saw it somewhere on DP.

Maybe Atari were taking the opposite stance from Nintendo, by not only not censoring their games, but putting themes like that on the cover to try and attract people fed up with the Big N's censorship of their games.

Satan has listened and answered the prayers of his loyal DP followers. He guided my cursor to the search feature, and then directed me to search titles only for the keyword "SATAN."

The original electronic Ouija of which you speak is the Magnavox Odyssey.

And here's the fucking thread.

Ya, Cybermorph had a green alien lady, possibly demonic. :P Tempest 2000 had demon heads that shot their horns at you. Also some very nice death metal in T2K. Infact I made a video of my playing some T2K shooting demon heads with death metal blaring :P.

Then of course, the Jag version of Doom was the very first home console version and it was full of demons and satanic references. No censors. Same with Wolfenstein 3d. Lots of Nazi and Hitler stuff. AvP is know to be one of the creepiest video games ever. Very eerie devilish atmosphere with Aliens and such. I'm a big Jaguar fan by the way. >;D

Do you suppose they could have done a halfway-decent Carnevil port if they wanted to? Or would the Jaguar be much too limited for that?

Hey, what is that Atari Jaguar Cd game name that has Ozzy's music video in it?......Another satanic hint....

The Jaguar was released shortly after Doom hit the scene and everyone was creaming their pants. This was also the time when Nintendo was being ultra-conservative, editing out even the most mundane things such as crosses.

It's probably a combination of the two.

I wanted to come into this thread refuting this observation, but the more I think about it, it makes some sense. Looking at my collection of about 40 Jaguar titles, I'd say as many as 1/4 of them significantly involve some sort of supernatural/occult imagery, to say nothing of the fact that the console roars at you when you turn it on. Yeah..yeah, it's a jaguar...or is it?! :evil:

Zing's explanation posted above is probably the most plausible one. Atari was definitely marketing this thing with a more mature audience in mind, hence the edgier approach to some of their ads (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBZTAtSbwW4&feature=related).

Jaguar = 6 letters
Devils = 6 letters
demons = 6 letters

666.

The evidence is piling up.

Wolfenstein 3d = 13 characters

Also, the final level in the game is Stage 6 Level 6, and you kill Hitler (6 letters) to beat the game... 666. Wolfenstein 3d was also the 6th game released for the Jaguar...

Btw I just got done beating Jag Wolf 3d on the Normal difficulty. What a great game it is. Love live the Jag! :) I love the little devil... ;)

if I was better at making graphics, I'd make one to show you all how much the Atari logo looks like the head of Baphomet, if you turn it upside down...

I noticed that, it's really weird.

Even the Red Screen of Death is like that.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Fight For Life... since it actually takes place in Hell. All the characters are dead, and are trying to win a second chance at life by defeating the devils son (because y'know, for some reason, the devil respects people beating up his kid or something?)

Oh I remember that! It wasn't for the Jaguar, but it was from around 1978. Please someone post that ad!
