Sega just posted pics of their archives. http://blogs.sega.com/usa/2008/08/07/the-sega-game-archive/

I would give anything to see that room in person. They have even more pics on flickr so make sure you guys click the link that's on there blog.

I would hate for that that collection to fall down... since its almost to the roof.

Please excuse me while I clean my underpants

Cool, but as I was looking at the pics, it is not all Sega games as even the website led us to believe.

SSX Tricky and GTA San Andreas have their camoes in those pics.

Still that is awesome.

They said they have some competitors games and consoles there aswell. I saw a ps1 dev system in one pic and a n64. I assume they used them to research there competition.

Looks a lot like our old Tips & Tricks Magazine game archives, with the exception of the tons of multiples of certain games!

I just took a quick glance at that. Based on the little I saw, that looks to be every USA Sega game. Meaning a complete collection like that is completely possible.

JUST posted huh?

edit: weird the date on that blog says aug 7 but I saw that very same blog a while ago, same pictures and everything.

Of course it's possible to collect every USA Sega game. Who said it wasn't? How are you sure this is every USA Sega game anyway? It doesn't look like everything to me, especially considering how many duplicates I see in the pictures. I'd really be interested to see what's on those GD-Rs and other stuff in the spindles. Other than that, I've seen equally impressive Sega collections in the Room of Doom area here.

Upon further inspection, it looks like their handheld collection is seriously lacking. I'm not seeing many Gameboy or Game Gear games, other than some in little plastic cases on the earlier move post on what looks like a different set of shelving.

the blog says the games are stacked double on the shelves, like deeper in.
And where hes getting from is the title that says "the greatest sega collection"

It looks like my place. Except there are fewer sega games :)

My company used to have a "library" where you could check out titles for free. They stopped doing it years ago because it was too difficult to manage.

Microsoft's archive is pretty sad. It consists of about a dozen automatic CD changers in a small room just outside the Xbox live control center.

Cloud121: I have every single Sega game released in the US complete in box. Game Gear, Master System, Genesis, 32X, Sega CD, Saturn, and Dreamcast, so yeah, it's very possible. I would say Game Gear and a Netlink Saturn game are the toughest, but everything else is very manageable.

Yes, but as Adol pointed out, there are much more complete Sega collections out there. Heck, I have complete US Saturn, Dreamcast, Master System, Sega CD and Genesis collections and it takes up a lot more space than the four shelving units in that picture even double stacked and shoved in like the one in the picture. I'm also familiar with libraries of this type as I own what used to be the library for Panasonic Media from the 3do days.

I'm sorry if this sounds snippy, but it makes me sad that the great video game companies have done such a poor job preserving their own history. I just read an interview with a former Sega designer who said that they couldn't port a Dreamcast game he had done to mobile phones because the source code was gone. That's a Dreamcast game, imagine what happened to the source for all the other classic games they developed long before that...

Those Saturn games aren't stored well... laying them flat causes the instruction books to bow in the middle.

And those games nearest the bottom are bound to crack sooner or later.

I'm referring to your "Who said it wasn't" comment, cause with a title like "Greatest Sega Collection" it kinda denotes that the collection is unrivaled, so the op did :|

Yowsers .. just checking out some of those DC protos -

Propeller Arena, Farnation(??), Bomberman Alpha, Otoire(??), Dee Dee Planet .. some pretty weird looking stuff there.

And a sealed copy of Taxi 2 ... best way for that game to be kept, truth be told.

Am kind of surprised that there is a bootleg Megadrive Tetris there ...

Oh, and for those who say that there can't be a full Sega release set there, it does say at the end of the slideshow that it is only one wall of the archive. Plenty of room for lots more stuff, I would say! Now, if someone can just sneak in and grab me an Aiwa Mega CD ...

I'm also curious as to what is in those big Dell boxes.

Sweet pics. Great to see that, very impressive. This is my ultimate goal to have every US Sega Game on every system. I am wrapping up my dreamcast games and game gear games. Who ever knows if I will finish my Sega Saturn collection. Genesis, Sega 32X, Sega CD, SMS, are done. Not bad Sega, Not bad at all. While we all as collectors can see how they stored it wrong this and that, it is still pretty cool that they at least tried to do an archive.

on a side note, I have one of those Megadrive Tetris carts...they are pretty cool.

This is neat, but I've seen more impressive collections here on DP.

I wonder if they have Outback Joey, or a Blockbuster competition cart.

I would have expected something a little more organised. I'm sure it really would be best if all those stacks of games were on shelves.

However, as cool as all the retail stuff is, I want to be let loose in there with a debug Saturn and a Katana to see what's on all those CD/GD-Rs.

But where are all the PCBs and Naomi carts/GDs? I only hope that somewhere Sega have every arcade PCB/Cart/GD they've ever created stored away, along with one of every Sega cab. I'd hope there's a warehouse somewhere in Japan with all this stored away. Mint condition Astro Citys, Aeros, Aero Tables, Blast Cities, all the Driving cabs and a row of every Naomi configuration.

^Ditto. While I'm sure there are more complete Sega collections here on DP. I guess I'm just impressed SoA even HAD game archive/library, much less letting anyone outside the company ever see it. In addition, they are trying to go somewhere with it, with public/semi-public rentals. Kudos to them!

It's entirely possible that some of you would have cardiac arrests if you saw the media archive at my work.

Amidst the stack of games lie a localized version of SeGaGaGa, ready to be published but unfortunately never saw the light of day.

...hey, a guy can dream, can't he?

Holy sheezus. I kind of figured that a place like All Media would have a vast library of media, but I guess I didn't expect it to be all on hand at once. Do you guys have a rental policy? :D

Has it all been converted to a digital format or is it just in a physical format only? Is there the same vast archives for movies and games as there is music?

wow, its amazing, but its really not organized that nicely to be honest. Some of the stuff was clearly just thrown somewhere or smashed in a shelf where it fit.

Is that all music cds in that storage room cav?

The nintendo vault is what i really want to see.

Nintendos complete collection would be worth so much more than segas.

I just picture chrono triggers, 100's of copies all sealed on a shelf? Ahh, lol.

I think that storage room has every game ever on their list. So that takes the cake.

Gapporin: "Holy sheezus. I kind of figured that a place like All Media would have a vast library of media, but I guess I didn't expect it to be all on hand at once. Do you guys have a rental policy?"

Yes, but it's an exclusive membership! :) Actually, technically the policy is that once something hits the archive it can't come back out unless there is something wrong with how the data was entered or a bad scan didn't get caught. However, the three departments (Movie, Music, Games) hangs onto the more recent releases and filters them back into the archive. I keep a large stash of games in my work area in two three-drawered (lockable) cabinets.

garagesaleking: "Is that all music cds in that storage room cav?"

The drawers that you see contain music CDs. On top of the drawers in the boxes are DVDs that have been removed from their cases and placed in manilla envelopes. What you can't see are the video game boxes on the back wall, although due to space concerns most had to be taken to offsite storage. I'm now winding up a project where I had to check the data, etc... of all 14,000+ games in the archive. Every single one of them have crossed my desk. It's pretty wild to think about my job sometimes. Anyway, that's just a little insight to my job.
