What would one of these be worth, this particular one has had some work done but needs a bit more the owner says. How much to get it in perfect order and is 1200 a fair price for it as is?

I would never and have never purchased a pinball without doing a very thorough examination of it in person. I'm just too picky about condition. Some things can be easily fixed or replaced (standard rubber parts, bulbs, etc...) while some cannot (major problems with the logic board or display, serious holes in the playfield, scrapes on the side of the cabinet). if you don't feel comfortable making the determination yourself, I would call around to local pinball vendors and see if they would check the machine out for you prior to purchase for a fee. Having said all that, $1200 is about the standard price for a working condition Star Wars in good shape. Collector's shape increases that price to $2,500 or even much more if it was a home use only machine. Depending on what's wrong with the machine, you could be out of pocket hundreds of dollars or much more if you need to have it fully shopped or need to have harder to find pieces and components replaced.

He mentioned it could use a "shopping out"

Shopping out means that the playfield is cleaned and recoated, rubber and plastic parts are replaced, bulbs are replaced and plastic polish is applied to the various playfield elements. Depending on who does this for you, it typically runs in the hundreds of dollars. Again $1200 for a Star Wars needing to be shopped isn't crazy, but if you're new to pinball or in an area with a lack of competent technicians, you may want to pay a little more for a truly excellent or already shopped machine.
