Honestly people, this is too weird for even me to make up. Sony has declared that a character from the still-unreleased Little Big Planet will be their official PS3 mascot. I suppose getting a mascot to go up against Mario and Master Chief isn't so bad....until you consider his name. Thats right, Sony's new mascot is called Sackboy: http://www.gamepro.com/news.cfm?article_id=206538

As hilarious as this may be(including all the new ammo anti-Sony fans will create from this announcement), I think it's only fair to remember how ludicrous we ALL thought the name "Wii" was after it replaced "Revolution". As a story breaker with journalistic integrity I'm inclined to report that. But still.....Sackboy?

I really wish LBP gets as popular and mainstream as they hope, even bigger. I am hoping that Sackboy becomes as popular as Mario and Sonic (ok a bit of a stretch) but maybe in 5 years he will be as big as them (ok so still a stretch). Seriously though LBP is going to be epic...as in possibly the best game to arrive on next gen systems so far (not a stretch).

I think LBP will be a great game, but unfortunately I can't see the mainstream public getting into it or accepting Sackboy as a mascot. Older gamers will probably think it looks too "kiddy" and the game seems to be too complex for young children.

Looks to be a kind of puzzle/platformer...judging from that video.

But back to Sackboy...I'm going to be honest, I think he looks creepy. I liked that cat-like polygon character Sony used to have--I think it was their mascot anyways...

They need their mascot to be the rabbit from Jumping Flash. He's cute but looks like he has a streak of bada$$ness to him. Sack Boy is cute but not viscous looking. Sony needs to attract both of those markets.

I think you create levels and then get to play through them.

I am very dissapointed by the lack of knowledge and hype I'm seeing here...

Not only has it been the biggest talked about game around Sony for this year (hence why they proposed Sackboy as their mascot)...but quite honestly it'll probably be one of the best games out on any system this year. This game is going to be HUGE.

Please, do yourself a favor, take a minute out of your day to check out the sites.

He's not the worst mascot by a long shot. In fact, he's interesting enough to be pretty cool. But it is strange that this came out of thin air. Especially since console mascots haven't been the most relevant lately. I figured that if Sony wanted a mascot to follow in Crash Bandicoot's footsteps it would be Jak. This is especially true since Jak is an established character. But, hey, Sonic didn't show up until the Genesis was about 2 years old.

It's a puzzle platformer. Also, I read somewhere today that you don't actually have a jump button, only left and right. As you approach ledges and such, the computer jumps for you. If this is true, this is gonna suck :(

Or what about the guy from God of War?

I have to say I'm not sure what the game is about either. I know that there are puzzles and that it's a platformer but to me it looks more like a downloadable game rather than a full release.

Sackboy is just his nickname. His proper name is Male Child of the Scrotum Tribe.

Not as giggle inducing as Wii was. But, it's fairly close. :)

Heh... Never thought of Master Chief as a mascot, didn't think the consoles had mascots anymore either... Well, a dirty, damaged puppet describes Sony well, hihi... :evil:

Ok, first of all, I want to thank Sony for finally giving me a reason to use the word "Sackboy" in a public forum.

Seriously though, the game looks like a lot of fun. I don't think it has GOTY potential, but it's unique, both in art direction and gameplay.

I just think they could have put in a little more time on the naming of this character. Besides, he kind of reminds me of Voodoo Vince.

(btw - Voodoo Vince was a great platformer for the Xbox.)
