I only beat this guy when I'm lucky, cuz I'm not good. Is there a trick? I'm playing it on the R-Types compilation for PSX.

Which one is that again? I can't remember, but I know I've beaten it on a regular basis.
Level 1: the Gieger ripoff
Level 2: The oversexed worm
Level 3: SDF 4
Level 4: ???? Is that the level with the wall makers?
Level 5: The red level, right? With the mothball king
Level 6: The elevator level?
Am I missing one?
Just keep dodging and take the pieces out one at a time. The blue laser is the best weapon here -- you'll need its angled shots to hit the weak points easily.
Kind of hard to give any more specific tips -- just keep at it. It's easily one of the game's most interesting bosses, IMO.

@fluke--The level 4 boss is the big box-shaped thing that breaks into three pieces. They move around the screen and then reassemble.
Thanks, BenT. So it's better to keep the force attached and use the 3-way reflect shot than it is to send the force ripping through the boss? I've been blasting the force into the boss, and just trying to dodge like crazy. I'll try keeping the force attached until I can at least blow up one third of the boss (at which point it obviously gets much much easier).

Oh yeah, that guy. I tried beating him by getting up close and hitting him as often as possible (BenT's plan is I think what I wound up using too: lazer/hold on to force), but you wind up getting crushed/killed too often. It's better to stay away as much as possible, IMO.
