KidFenris or Sardius should really have a look at this. They've both lampooned video game ads disguised as comics in the past... and I can't think of one that's more worthy of ridicule than this.

Yeah, yeah! We're being sabotaged by Nintendo! Pay no attention to the fact that the NES is roughly 47 times more powerful than the 7800 and that Nintendo's games are far better designed than ours!

WOW. This is almost as racist as World War II newsreel cartoons about "Japs" and "Krauts." And what's the deal with pathetic cartoons as the last resort of desperate videogame companies? "We here at NEC have chosen many of the worst PC Engine games to localize, and we don't have a clue about marketing -- but Johnny Turbo whining about the Sega CD will surely save us!"

Heh. You've got to love the "ninja-endo" and "captain-san" dialogue. Ah, those Japanese and their deceitful business practices. Lee Iacocca would be proud of Atariman.

Speaking of bad game-related comics, I've recently been caught up in the fascinatingly awful Flying Warriors serial that ran in Gamepro around 1991.

Here's a sample.

I swear that's the original dialogue.

My favorite line from this "Adventures of Atari" thing is definitely "quality control checkers are checking". You just know even the most loyal Atari employees must have laughed their asses off when they saw that.

Kid, are you scanning in all of those Flying Warriors ads or something? I had like 2 or 3 of the old Gamepros they were in and have always wanted to see the whole series. I remember actually enjoying them as a kid, but that's probably just because I liked the game so much.

I hadn't planned to scan the comics in, since they're just part of some research I'm doing. And even if I put them up on my site, I only have four issues of the magazine. However, one of them is the last issue, in which readers are told to buy the game to see the ending. Yes, that's right. The comic doesn't really have an ending.

If you like, I can send these issues of GamePro to you once I'm done with 'em. I actually got the mags from the Unknown Gamer, and I think that he had the entire run of the Flying Warriors comic.

Holy lord, that is an AMAZING piece of work! Those Japanese caricatures are right up there with those found in the Popeye classic "You're a Sap, Mr. Jap" in terms of offensiveness. The snake-like slanted eyes, the bowl haircuts, the big (almost buck) teeth...it's all there, man. Truly incredible.

The rest of it is gold, too. Are we failing because our hardware is hideously underpowered and because our games suck balls? Nah, can't be. Let's blame it on those dirty Japs and their subtle, game library-destroying viruses. "Ninja-endo," indeed. Wonderful, wonderful stuff.

Those Flying Warriors comics need scanning badly, by the way. I've got the full set, but it'll take loads of time and effort to get them all done...not to mention the fact that I'd also, uh, need a scanner. But this needs to get done somehow, for sure.

Agreed. The comic was both racist and insanely juvenile. The worst enemy to Tramiel-Atari was Tramiel-Atari. Although the magazine itself was the only source of information for the 7800- beyond brief mentions in Gamepro and others- at times it wasn't even accurate (e.g. the 7800 version of Donkey Kong does NOT have all 4 screens).

One wonders- in the sales department of Nintendo of America, did they have an employee-drawn picture of "Ninja-endo" pounding Atari?

Fun Fact- The day our Government came up with their conclusions against Nintendo, it just happened to be December 7th...Pearl Harbor Day.
