I don't use a voltage converter to run my Japanese PS2. I do use one to play a PAL PS2 though.

I do the same, never had a problem.

the recommended course of action on all Japanese electronics in US/Canada is to either buy a stepdown converter or unplug it when not in use. Most of the time, it'll be fine, but just to be on the safe side I keep my famicom unplugged at all times unless it's in use.

There is zero reason to have a voltage converter for a Japanese PS2 anywhere in the world. The power brick runs on switchable 100-240V, so it will work anywhere in the world.
I ran my JP PS2 in Malaysia without any converter for years, and they are a 240V country. No problems, still runs fine today.
