I'm pretty sure most people get their "15 minutes of fame", and they probably get more fame than this, but I'm OK with this brief moment with msn.com.http://tech.msn.com/guides/collectthis_videogames.aspx ...

DUDE, that is unequivocally fucking AWESOME!!

Congrats on an awesome segment!

It's always nice to see collectors featured in a positive light, and Joe, you sir are a wonderful ambassador!

And, I must ask ... is that "Seaman promo can" that appears at your home base the one that I traded to the store in my personally historic first DP store trade-in, or did you have one of your own prior to that?

Good video, Joe. Thanks for posting the link!

It's funny...right after you explained that there are only two Save the Whales prototypes in existence, they stamped it with a big, red "COLLECT THIS." :)

As a long time fan of Antiques Roadshow, my first thought was "hey, it's the Keno brothers" then Joe pops on screen and it's "Holy shit! It's Joe and the Keno Brothers!"

Very VERY awesome.

That's really fantastic. 5 minutes of fame might sound small but even Walt Disney had a first 5 minutes of fame before the rest took off.

I'm a fan of the show as well, and this video was indeed awesome. It's cool to see you and the store get some more mainstream attention, hopefully it translates to even more sales and success. :)

That was YOURS before it was mine. Just happens to be one of those things that looks cool in front of other things. Thanks!

Yeah... it was a long, long day and hopefully I'll get around to documenting it. Let me just say that there are a lot of takes and things seem to get re-arranged. I'm not totally thrilled with the final product but it's a good job overall.

Joe, I just meant that how are newcomers supposed to "COLLECT" something when you own one of only two copies in existence? Yeah, good luck collecting that, rookie. :)

It wasn't your fault. The illogical "COLLECT THIS" stamp was added in post-production.

The video was great overall, though. You came off as being well-spoken, comfortable, and natural. Thanks again for sharing.

Joe, I just meant that how are newcomers supposed to "COLLECT" something when you own one of only two copies in existence? Yeah, good luck collecting that, newcomer. :)

I know exactly what you mean - when it was originally taped, the point was kinda to look out for games like "Save The Whales", with weird typewritten/unprofessional labels, as these are sometimes worth more than the rarest of rare retail games. But that was a lot of material and that whole conversation got cut out. Except for the part where "Save The Whales" is a top collectible. Oh well!

Joe, this is awesome.

But am I the only one that wanted to slug those two guys when they started handling your stuff badly? Or when they were "playing"? They reminded me of that GamePro TV show, and that is NEVER A GOOD THING.

That was an interesting piece, Joe!

I know what you mean about the process. I have been quoted in newspapers and such before and even though it was what I said; it wasn't what I said, by the way they positioned it.

Anyway, it was cool to see the store and it makes me want to come even more, if I am ever on that side of the country.

Very cool dig, Joe. Congrats. And yeah, I'm not surprised you did a lot of takes, but only certain parts made the cut. It usually works like that. But from what I saw, I thought it was a great little piece and I agree with the poster that said you came off poised, well-spoken and relaxed. This is not only a good day for you and your store (as well as this site) but for video gamers out there. Nice for a change to see something like this instead of the typical "gamers are secluded losers" mainstream tidbits. Refreshing

As we would say in my English class "ORO!"
Which translates into English from Spanish meaning: GOLD!

no not spanish class, but english class.
Funny but long story why we would say this in english class.

Basically to sum it all up:

GOLD!!

Joe,
I just gotta ask:

Was that the Wizard of Wor Board game I traded you at the bottom of the stack? You're still getting more use out of it than I did! :)

It was! Again, something that got cut out - I brought "videogame related things to look for", which included board games and memorabilia. I took it out of the shrinkwrap, too. The box was starting to "implode" from the tight shrink. It's an awesome piece, thanks again for doing that trade.

...funny...I didn't see a "Classic Gamer Magazine #1" on the table. Maybe it was edited out or something....

Their table was too small ;)

Did anyone else noticed Joe paused a bit when he picked up the copy of LockJaw? I got to hand it to you Joe, you got more balls than I do when it comes to someone else grabbing at my collection. I would have slugged them.

Maybe it looked like these guys were mishandling things but they're professional collectors (from what I learned that day, primarily furniture, guitars and antiques) who understand the "spoil" factor. I don't really mind people handling this stuff anyway, though. I'm the opposite of the sealed games collectors. I think everyone should touch it, play it, enjoy it.

so joe was this the "Big" secret you were telling us 2 months ago? either way congrats awesome job loved it!

I don't think I called it a big secret. It was a secret project. How big or small it seems to anyone doesn't really matter, it was fun to do.

I do have more to add to the story though. Just wanted to get the link out there before it expires!

It is true that, presumably because of the time restriction, they made it seem like they were sending the message "If you collect video games you will become rich!" Questions of value obviously would come to mind but I think questions of history are much more important when looking at a really good collection. A person kind of misses the point if as he walks through the Baseball Hall of Fame all he constantly asks is "So what's that worth? And that?"

I liked how my old n64 controller got a little pub in your personal collection, nice to know it feels special.

I intentionally displayed stuff that was purchased or traded in by people I know. I'm not kidding - I had a pretty decent amount of lead time to think through what to put on camera. Unfortunately most of it got cut, but a few snuck in there!

I'm curious, what items in your collection holds the most sentimental value for you?

Sentimental value, eh? Hmm. I'd have to say a tie between a Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt cart and a Commavid box, both signed by friends wishing me luck at the store just before I opened. I keep both of them right in the center island (between the stereo speakers).

That's how I felt.
Both of them annoyed me in the video, I thought it sucked how Joe mentioned "here's a few simple things to start off collecting" and didn't really get the chance to explain because they were just worried about the valuable stuff.

Yeah, I'll give them a pass because it was just a 5 minute video but I did find it awkward that they asked about advice for people starting out and then quickly stamped the most expensive items with "Collect this!" Almost like they were telling beginners to start out by splurging on the most expensive items available. Joe, I don't know if you intended to do it but you did a good job scaling back the $$$ hype by talking about goal setting and being thrifty.

Joe needs more then 15 minutes. You could make a sort of King of Kong with a selection of the worlds greatest and largest (collection not body mass *ahm) game collectors. The selling of a NWC cart in a real auction. The drama of finding Quadrun 2600 at a thrift store. The drama created when the wife doesn't 'get' the collection. etc etc.

Being that these guys are supposed to be professionals with handling rarities, whether or not Joe is cool with them handling things as such, they should have known better. Almost makes me think they weren't taking him as seriously as they let on. Dicks! That douchey Guitar Hero intro almost made me turn away. I'd have to say $800 as of today, based on some bids I've heard thrown about. I *did* talk about this a bit (because the game's origin is interesting. I brought Chase the Chuckwagon along for the same reason) but that was another bit clipped from the final product!

As a long time fan of Antiques Roadshow, my first thought was "hey, it's the Keno brothers" then Joe pops on screen and it's "Holy shit! It's Joe and the Keno Brothers!"

Very VERY awesome.

Personally, I'd like to see David Dickinson and Joe.

Joe: "This game is Lockjaw, for the Atari 2600. It's one-of-a-kind and worth thousands."

David: "Well isn't that a bobby dazzler?!"

About the "not so careful" handling of games, I think the Keno brothers might not consider video games as "serious collectibles", they're antique experts and if you showed them a piece of Roseville pottery or Tiffany sterling, they'd probably think to be more careful. I got the vibe that they were just thinking "Oooh, video games" and not "Be careful with the very expensive-to-replace video games."

I think the Kovels would've been a little more careful if they were interviewing Joe, they always seemed to respect collectibles of any kind. (Are the Kovels still alive? They just seemed to disappear a while back. Their website doesn't mention anything about The Kovels mortality. Hmmmm...... In fact, the website doesn't have anything attributed to Raph and Terry, just the the Kovels name.)

Yup, same here, I signed on to MSN and saw it on the front page. Nice interview Joe! Its nice to see the store get even more exposure. I'll always remember that I came by the store to see it (it was still under construction) and was like "I'll be back!". Soon after, I moved from NYC to Las Vegas and now it'll be even harder for me to ever visit :( At least I saw more of it on the video :) Again, nice interview and I agree with the consensus..you were very relaxed and well spoken on camera...and didnt come off like a dick as many "collectors" often do..

P.S. - Was there anything specifically cut from the interview you wish they would have kept in?
