What do you think every collector needs in their collection, personally I think it's either the NES or Atari with a few games.

I'd say a Neo Geo AES as the console seems to have quite a few excellent games with some of the smallest production runs.

An NES is a no-brainer, as it pretty much singlehandedly revived console gaming in the US. Though I wouldn't say it's the most collectible thing in the world, as it's found in pretty much every home in the US's closets or basement, I would have to say its mark in the history of gaming makes it a must have system.

Why the most crucial and universal need for all collectors...SPACE! :king:

A big sack of money ....

And refering to the collection itself, NES is BASIC in every collection; with the NES you have access to the broadest library with almost genre covered for first time ever, the games have an ingenuity level that it's still unmatched and the value of NES games is rising but still accessible to anyone.

I'm going to say every collector needs a system, and at least one game.

OK, smartasshattery done, I truly believe each person should collect only what he or she is passionate about. I couldn't imagine my collection without my 2600, Commodore 64, and NES...but if they aren't your thing, then find what is!

Whether you collect for one or multiple systems, you should have a library representational of the best (i.e. - most playable) games that the system(s) had to offer. That doesn't necessarily mean grails and protos. I've nothing against rarities, but I think the best individual collections are the ones in which the average non-collector can find something to which they can relate.

as many systems as they can find for good prices. Also every collection should have some handheld stuff.

Every collector should have a copy of E.T. for the 2600.

Seriously. For better or worse, very few games have had a bigger impact on the industry.

I think you shouls have at least one poster on your wall from an old school game/system. I have the one that came with Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure on the Genny and the full map of the original Final Fantasy......

You're all crazy. The ONLY thing a collector needs is a compulsive personality. Without that, you can't really be a collector.

My opinion: A CIB collection of some kind...
Some people would disagree with me, I'm sure.

You all got it wrong. You need a passive switcher to swap between all your systems. Trust me, I know. Right now I'm switching between my atari 2600, 5200, 7800, and XE systems. I'm also using one to go between my nes, snes, genesis, and tg16.

I've got an Aliens vs. Predator Atari Jaguar poster, so I'm covered that way.

What game collectors need? Lots of room. Some good shelving to store everything on. That way everything can be ready to go instead of in storage tubs.

Another thing most collectors need: an understanding wife. It sucks if your significant other hates games and won't let you keep them out because she thinks in her narrow opinion that it's a waste of time. This seems to happen to a few poor guys out there.

balls of steel. First time a chick your trying to mack it to sees a libraries worth of game stocked shelves in your room, it can be just a bit awkward depending on said chick.

Unless she's like some mouthbreathing asperger's syndrome nerd chick. Then she'll forget about you and proceed to organize your games according to UPC number.
