am I the only person who doesn't understand how to make a character that works in Soul Calibur 4? Apparently every character I make has too many skill points in certain areas, and I've tried spreading them out, but 90% of this bullshit makes no sense at all.
Any pointers?
Thread flaming or mocking of my utter lack of understanding, will result in an old fashioned ass-kicking.
Gahhhh this game pisses me off so much.
And why does everyone online have to play like a damn dirty gypsy?

Cry about it, emo kid. ;)
And I can't tell you an answer. Perhaps you've had the misfortune of only playing with actual gypsies. LOL

Since when do emo kids kick other people's asses? I was under the impression that they were so sad because they were everyone else's punching bags.
Oh, umm... Soul Caliber 4- uhh, I've never played it.
Since this is a video game website, there's probably someone here who has played it. So hold off before getting all emo over that.

The armor, equipment, weapons, and accessories you equip on your character all contribute to raising/lowering your 5 ability stats (Power, Impact, Boost, Gauge, Special). The abilities you choose ("Hyper Strength" or "HP Drain" to name a few) all are assigned a numeric value (cost). That cost must fall under the maximum number next to the specific statistic. Also, you unlock more abilities as your character gains levels by playing the game (max level = 9). These are darkened and can't be selected until you reach the required level.
Check out the stats of your custom character.
Example:
Power: 20 / 125
Impact: 40 / 60
Boost: 35 / 60
Gauge: 20 / 25
Special: 35 / 120
Number on the left = The "cost" of the ability you want to give your character.
Number on the right = The maximum number you have to "spend" in a specific stat.
You can use "HP Drain C" because it only costs 35 in the Boost category. "HP Drain B" on the other hand is more powerful...but you can't use it because it costs 75, and you only have 60. You can only use it if you equip something that increases your total "boost" stats >75.
In short...the numbers on the left need to be smaller than the numbers on the right or it won't let you save your custom character (which you probably have already experienced).

I think with a little more work and the help you provided me I can figure it out.
And if these d-bags are real gypsies....I am afraid for XBL. There is no way of knowing what trickery, shenanigans, and assorted tomfoolery they will be up to next.

Does Soul Calibur IV not come with an instruction manual?

Does Soul Calibur IV not come with an instruction manual?
Not a very good one. Half of the book is the French instructions, with 6 pages for notes, and 2 pages of coupons for Church's Fried Chicken and Journeys.
Incidentally, why do manuals still include notes sections? Does anyone ever use them?
The one and only time I ever used it was when I beat Super Mario Bros. I recorded the date and the time.

Gypsies are good people, now STFU. ;) I'm not PC minded by any stretch, but I think it is supremely laughable how some ethnicities and lifestyles are alright to jab at while other are off limits. Either take the damn gloves off or put everyone in a pink fluffy bubble safe suit. LOL
Oh yeah, you suck at Soul Calibur 4? Tinker with it and it'll come to you eventually. Same as most things. You could build a really good character and suck with it. Why? Not your play style. Your build has to match your play ability and tendencies.

Church's Fried Chicken? Talk about random. Do they have sponsorship in the game or something? Does Siegfried pull out a box of chicken and chow down after winning a round or something?

A) Gypsies are bad people. They make a living on the basis of lying and theft. Thusly, BAD PEOPLE. And all people are good to take a jab at, some folks just can't take it.
B) I do not suck at Soul Calibur 4, I have 20 or so hours on it, I've mastered at least one or two characters move sets. I have beaten it with every single character in the game, yet even my friend who is better than me usually, couldn't get a win online. People online enjoy being dirty and spamming the same moves over and over. You would think that this would be easy to beat then. WRONG. This game is so unbalanced that no matter what, its darn near impossible to do anything in return to their attacks that trap you on the ground or from ever pulling of even a block.

20 hours? You do know online matches are dominated by people who nearly log that playtime per day, maybe two, yes? No strategy/tactic in fighters (unless seriously flawed in design) is a perfect one. There is always an answer, you just have to figure it out. You can really increase your skill playing people that routinely whoop your ass. I'm not saying you need to dedicate your life to the game. Even small doses can get you there given time. So take advantage and watch and learn. Don't fall to the dark side of the 'scrub' and quit calling them people Gypsies. Pointers and advice will only get you so far. If you really want to do better, you have to get your ass kicked a lot. At least the lessons aren't costing you 25/50 cents a round like it used to. You already paid for your prescription of pain, don't be bitchin' cause you won't take the taste of the medicine. LOL
You really should read that wiki, it's funny and it'll learn ya somethin'. :)
What characters have you mastered? Are you building your customs with their move sets or another characters? The bonuses you apply should try to cover both your strengths and weaknesses along with the base characters. Again, your gonna have to tinker. Take your customs through off-line vs cpu and rake that diff up. Once you're comfortable with a build from that point, then debut your creation online and prepare for the pain. That's all I got to offer.

Your problem in a nutshell, DK, is that you're playing this game for casual entertainment against people who play the game very seriously as a lifestyle.
Master Moonsight has the right of it. You aren't taking the proper lessons from your losing matches. Figure out how you're being beaten and then figure out how to counter it; that's the fun of high level fighting game play. If that isn't fun to you, then yer out of luck, because there are a LOT of very good players online for Soul Calibur IV right now and high level is what you're going to get whether you like it or not.
If you don't like it then stick to the CPU or friends with a comparable skill level. No shame, no questions. That's it.
EDIT: And for the record, you and your friend are losing fair and square. Deal with it.

20 hours. I realize that it isn't that much. But when you are being beaten by lower level fighters, then you realize something is up.
And the characters I have mastered moves for so far are Yun-Seong and Nightmare/Karikirimusi. And somehow when I play against other people using those characters, I know what they can do but they still find ways to be dicks about their playing style. Like one of Nightmares exploits where he hits you, which breaks your guard and then kicks once or twice knocking you out of the ring nearly every time.

The level thing online is not at all indicative of skills at the game. Someone who is the grand master might have only started playing it online that day, and thus is a level 1 character online. Someone who sucks may have been lucky and kept getting people who sucked more until he got to level 20 or whatever.
Oh, and here's a simple tip: sidestep.

Yeah. I fought a guy who was like at level 60 or so. He spammed the same move over and over and over. Once he took a shot or 2 to the shins, and I got closer, his whole game plan fell apart and he lost a couple of rounds. He eventually won becuase I screwed up and let him back into his rut. I try to play against people who a "better" than me.
This has shown me that:
1. Just because you're at a high level doesn't mean that you're "good"
2. ANYONE can be beaten and EVERYONE has a weakness.

What's your Gamertag or PS3 ID? Maybe if you played a few matches against friendly people from DP you could see what we're trying to tell you.
You realize the 'low level fighters' you're facing are probably hardcore Soul Calibur players who date all the way back to the Dreamcast iteration, right? Of course they can play straight out of the gate; they've been playing for a decade already.
And just to set another record straight, just because you're comfortable with a character's move-set doesn't mean you've mastered that character. I've been playing Ken in Street Fighter III for ten years, and I still learn something new every once in a while. Your character represents a set of advantages and weaknesses; half of learning a character is learning how they relate to all the other characters' strengths and weaknesses. You haven't even started learning yet. And that's OK. You just need to stop freaking out, read a FAQ, play a bunch against people you're comfortable with and take it easy. From the tone of your posts, you're psyching yourself out, too; that's ALWAYS counter-productive.. Unless that's the Emo. I can't be sure.
