After looking through the Classic Discussions I didn't see this question being asked before, so here it is:

What games have you purchased simply because they had a title you couldn't pass up (whether you knew anything about the game itself beforehand or not)?

A few of mine:
Urban Yeti! (GBA)
Master Chu and the Drunkard Hu (NES)
Mr. Chin's Gourmet Paradise (Game Boy)
Squeeze Box (2600)

Beside Shaq Fu, I'm pretty happy with the purchases.

Hmmm...

Kung Fu Heroes
Bad Street Brawler
Captain Skyhawk

All for the NES, back when all it took was a quick glance at the back of the box to see if it looked cool.

Wowza. I remember this game was pretty good, too. I'll have to get a copy sometime.

Games I bought just for the title:

Tagin' Dragon (NES) (also bought cause of the wacky blue cartridge.)
Phantom Crash (XBOX) (a pretty nice mech game, good value for $2.99)
Tall: Infinity (PS1) (this game started my Agetec addiction. Anyone else fascinated with these kind of PS1 games?)
Hatris (Gameboy)
Robopon (Gameboy)
Toki Tori (Gameboy)

Sticky Balls for the Gizmondo is one that pops into mind. Another one I always wanted based on it's name (but I was too young to get it) was the Infocom game Leather Goddesses of Phobos. I don't think it even came out on the TI-99/4A, which is another reason I didn't get it.

The Chaos Engine on the Amiga was another one I wanted, but couldn't find a copy here in the US. Great name, great one-level demo.

Luckily I was too young to have my own money back then and these were only rentals.

- Ballz (SNES) and I remember the magazine ads said something about "so you think you got Ballz?" or somethng like that.

- Power Instinct (snes) Killer Instinc was out in the arcades and it's still my favorite fighting game. This was a fighting game that had the word instinct in it so i gave it a try. Game sucked.

Squeeze Box (2600)
The Who had a non-pinball game?

Oh, guess not... :(

I have been considering getting a game called Den-no Senshi REJECTION for FM Towns for some time. It's billed as an action adventure and has a silhouetted assassin-looking girl on the cover. Dunno what sort of game it is really, but it sounds funny.

Let's also add The Elder Scrolls, DOOM, Half-Life, Castlevania, Contra, Gradius, and anything with Toaplan in the name to my list.

Sticky Balls for the Gizmondo is one that pops into mind. Another one I always wanted based on it's name (but I was too young to get it) was the Infocom game Leather Goddesses of Phobos. I don't think it even came out on the TI-99/4A, which is another reason I didn't get it.
Yeah, that's one of those games I think you need a disk drive for. Can't imagine all that text would fit on a disk.

I'll go with Ninja Golf (Atari 7800). Who wouldn't have snapped that one up at the time?

As for buying a game based solely on the box art, I'll say Pooyan, Picnic, and Crypts of Chaos for the 2600.

Though I didn't discover them until just a few years ago, there are some Amiga games with fantastic names that I would have bought solely for that reason years go, if I'd had an Amiga. One of them is Chaos Engine. With a name like that I expected some creepy sci-fi adventure game. The end result is a Guerrilla War-type thing which wasn't that great.

Another one was (I think) called Corpse. I had no clue what to expect with Corpse, but it was kind of like Equinox with a Heimdall-esque graphic style.

Good Topic!

Mine:

Urban Yeti! - how could you NOT buy this?

Mystic Defender - in our Dungeons & Dragons games we were playing Mystics. I bought it becuase I thought it would be like the Mystics in the game. Not quite. I hated the game at first but got used to it and ended up loving it.

Michael Jacksons Moonwalker- shut up! I was young

Zombies at my Neighbors- oh yea!

It Came From the Desert! - it came from somewhere...

Goonies II - still a favorite!

Top Gun - I got the carrier landings down to a science

No One Can Stop Mr. Domino. Turns out, he's really easy to stop.

Yeah, I came in to post this. Shoulda known someone would have already have got there.

Mister Mosquito also bought for same reason.

Fortunately, they were both kick-ass games :)

Games that I was strongly influenced by the title when I bought were: Panzer Dragoon Saga, Alien Soldier, Toejam and Earl: Panic on Funkatron

</fightergeek>

Yes, the first couple Power Instincts were terrible. 3rd was ok, the last one was when the series reeeeally hit their stride. PI4 had Billy and Jimmy from Double Dragon, and some of the crazier fighters out there (the octogenarians were great. Let me bring my hands off my stroller to CAST FIREBALLS).

End boss was a 13 year old princess with a magic box that would kick your ass.

Yeah - it's Matrimelee for the Neo Geo - Power Instinct 4. So remember kids - some series need time to develop into the beautiful flower of... uh... weirdness. I so lost track of where I was going here...

</fightergeek>

But power instinct 1 on the snes? Awful. I'm so sorry for you.

Darn! I just missed "Revenge of the Beefsteak Tomatoes"!
I will admit, not only did I buy it for the title, but the box art is probably the most awesome I've seen. I didn't know it existed until a few months ago when I happened to find it at a store. I dug my atari out of the closet, hooked it up, and man... it was the most generic atari game ever.

I still love the box art, though.
http://www.atariage.com/box_page.html?SoftwareLabelID=406&ItemTypeID=BOX

Also, I did rent Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom based on the name alone, and found it to be so much fun I ended up buying it from the video store when they finally sold it a couple years later. Made it to the last level, but I never did beat it, though. :(

Hmm... maybe I have a subtle fixation with tomato-based games? Nah.

Games I bought because of the title and license that stunk: Dirty Harry, Blues Brothers, Nightmare on Elm Street, Ghostbusters, the first Evil Dead game, and The Thing.

Crappy games I bought on the title alone: Drakken, Mansion of Hidden Souls, Red Dead Revolver, and pretty much anything with the name Devil, Demon, Hell, etc. Except for Devil Crash/Crush, which was a pleasant surprise.
