I don't know if this has been noted before, but I noticed that there is some N64 games where the insert in the box that holds the game is removable, and others where it is attached to the box. Was this something that was random, or something that started at a certain time?
Was this like this for the NES or SNES? I don't really know how the boxes were for those systems (beside a few samples I have). Thanks.

not to be mean... but this has be noted.
I think over time it was easier and cheaper to do(attached inserts).

Some time during the N64's lifespan, there was a transition from the removable white trays to the built in trays. I can't tell you when exactly. I also know that there are a few games I have seen with boxes made both ways.

True...
Maybe its like the PS1 Long Boxs, different variants..
Then again, someone knows the answer to this.

Is the majority of them the removable or the built ins? (if you have any idea)

I might be wrong but... I think removable

Well, I was thinking about this topic some more, and thought it would be a good idea to make a list. It might be pretty deep if a lot of people contribute. Here is a list of North American N64 boxes (from the boxes I have in my collection) of the ones that are removable (r) and non-removable (nr):

Hmm, I can go through my games sometime and check them. I will be going through them all when I get my collections code done anyway, so I can post on here in the next couple days when I start to go through my games.

I only noticed this phenomenon for the first time when I set up my game room a couple weeks back. Very strange coincidence to see this thread pop up. Cool idea, and I'm interested to see if any game comes both ways.

Well, is that due to the "free vehicle" inside the game? I wonder what other ones there are....
Also, I will update a complete list every so often if more people contribute (just combine everyone's into one list). I'll try to add the more boxes I get.

yeah, would love to see a list. It can be tricky to get the nr's in good shape. I think my Resident Evil 2, Bugs Life & Blues Brothers(maybe on this one) are nr's...some soccer games are nr's & some WWE ones too. All my collection is in storage atm, I cant help too much im afraid. meh
btw, my mario tennis, OOT & Perrfect Dark are removable (PAL)

Ya know, no offense guys, but I have to say that whether the cardboard inside the boxes is attached or not has to be the least interesting variant possible for a game. I can't imagine why you'd want a list of which had which, unless you were so desperate for extra N64 stuff to collect that you'd want to get both versions of boxes.
The only thing I can think of that would compare in terms of sheer boringness would be keeping tabs on games that have different UPC numbers, but are otherwise exactly the same.
Art variants, though, are pretty rad. Just my two cents.

I couldn't agree more, but there are people out there just insane enough to do it. You just watch.

I just thought it be cool to see a list, and to see if there was a certain time that they changed it completely, or it was just random. It's not like we're going into deep converisons about it. It's just something to talk about...

Yeah. We're pretty much scraping the bottom of the barrel when it comes to classic collecting topics. Though, when PS2 becomes considered classic that will open up some more things.

As a big N64 supporter during its lifespan, I really hated it when they transitioned to the non-removable inserts. Judging by my collection (and from memory) the non-removables came out sometime in mid-late 1998. The most recent release in my collection with a removable tray was WCW Mayhem by EA which came out in fall of 1999, and seems to be a freak occurance as the NR's were pretty much standard at that point.
A few more for your list:

You know, this also happened with GBA games! I have a couple of games that don't have a tray, but instead they have this little cart holder attached to the cardboard box.
I don't see the point of collecting these different boxes as variants. HOWEVER, it is a good idea to make a list of what games came like this just in case it's needed by someone.

some of them could be very short run varients and could end up being more valuable to the completist, remeber some of the 5 screw nes games are pretty tough to come by (just try to find a star force I dare you!), not the most exciting variant but still fun to see whats out there.
