Ok, in this era where downloading games on services like Steam is becoming more popular and where all you get at retail stores anymore is a cardboard box and a CD I would like to get opinions on what were some of the neat items that PC games came with back in the days of classic PC gaming. I remember when games were not just a CD but were maps, training manuals, charts, code wheels, etc. It really does not have to be PC gaming either. Items like the Earthbound players guide that was a standard item in the package was legendary in gaming value. So what bonus pack-in items do members of this board remember fondly:)

In terms of console gaming, my favorite was always the letter that came with NES Star Tropics. :)

In terms of PC gaming, my favorite extra would have been anything that came with the old Bard's Tale games.

My favorite is World in Conflict, which came with a piece of the Berlin Wall. Close second is Lunar: Eternal Blue Complete with Lucia's pendant.

"Leather Goddesses of Phobos" for the C64 came with a "Lance Mastodon" 3-D comic book, a scratch-n-sniff card, and probably some other stuff I'm forgetting about. Not too shabby for a semi-lewd text adventure! It's actually among the C64 packaging I haven't thrown out, because it's somewhat useful to the game as well.

Best thing I remember was the Zork Trilogy from Infocom. It came packaged with a zorkmid coin! They go for a pretty penny on eBay if they're in good condition, unlike mine which lost its gold plating over the years. I had it bound in a wire frame and wear it as a pendant on occasion (yes, I'm that weird).

Easy question. Easy.

Cloth maps from the old Ultima games. Definitely #1.

#2 would be the Mines of Titan thing - it came with an envelope of "stuff." The manual told you not to open the envelope until the game tells you to do so. It was very, very cool to open the envelope at the right moment in the game and see all the revelatory stuff contained therein.

I'll second the Lunar pack-ins (either SSSC or EB). Especially the cloth map and art book in SSSC, but yeah that pendant was HEAVY! I also loved the little sealed hintbook that came with Zelda 3, as well as the map of Hyrule that came with Legend of Zelda (I still have mine, my mom laminated it when I was 7 -lol).

The artbook and OST from Persona 3 was cool too, for a new-school nod.

EA Jane's Fighter's Anthology had a guide book that was unbelievably detailed on all the planes.

I agree with Ultima's cloth maps. The manual and spellbooks were also great fun to read. Ultima IV also included an Ankh. Damn, I wish I still had those.

I've got a huge box of manuals and pack-ins from PC games from 84-94 or so. I should dig that up.

I liked the Dial-a-Pirate for Monkey Island, Lucasarts did that for a bunch of games IIRC.

Those evil "You can't photocopy ME" purple papers with black writing on them always pissed me off.

The awesome pack-ins for Bureaucracy and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy from Infocom are tops on my list. They came with a bevy of pack-ins each.

A close second would be the boxer shorts that you could get with the original PC version of Aliens Vs. Predator. "So scary we've included a free pair of underwear!" LMAO!

Falcon 3.0 for PC came with that ridiculously huge and detailed manual. Almost felt like I could pass written tests for flight school after reading that thing.

Ultima was my first thought as well. There was an Ultima compilation that came with multiple maps -- one for each game (at least that is what I remember). I have several of these maps, always wondered if they were displayable in some way. There was also an Ankh with at least one of the Ultimas, not much by itself.
