Did anyone else pick this up? I'm liking it a lot so far. The graphics are gorgeous, the soundtrack is great, and the combat is fun and what you'd expect from the Tales series if you've played the last couple. the item Synthesis is pretty cool, as is learning new skills from weapons you've equipped. The only thing I'm annoyed with is the lack of Japanese audio. I'm sure Namco will offer it as DLC and charge for it eventually, but it'd be nice if was already there today. There are some free item packs available on the XBL Marketplace, but unfortunately I don't have a Gold account so I can't check them out. :(

I'll easily pick it up after a few price drops. Not because I don't want to play it now...but because I buy way too many games to be able to spend $60 a pop on each one. :bawling:

Does this game have random encounters like FF games?

No, none of the Tales games do. Neither did FF XII, for that matter.

Well, now I know which game I'm picking up tomorrow :) Thanks!

anyone else pick this up yet? I am a newb to the tales games as I have only played ToS for like an hour so I dont really have any other games from the series to compare it to. It's between this and infinite undiscovery but I am more leaning towards this one since I did enjoy the really fast combat in the demo.

I'm waiting for my Premium Edition to come in the mail. (damn online exclusive) Hopefully I should have it by the end of the week as I love the Tales series and have been dying to play this one.

I bought this yesterday, although I haven't had a opportunity to play it just yet. I should be able to start playing tonight, so I'll give my thoughts on it soon.

I picked up one of the premium/special editions at Gamecrazy. It comes in one of those steelbook cases with a soundtrack cd. I think it was available online at amazon and Gamestop as well.

I had mine pre-ordered for awhile and I just now got a confirmation email about it shipping. I'm not happy at all, since they charged me for it Monday.

Premium:

Product Features
Premium Items in Collectable steelcase metal box
Tales 10th anniversary Music CD (Music selection from Vesperia and previous Tales titles)
52 - 72 page manual with art
Collectable steelcase metal box

Eh. Soundtrack is ok...would be better if it wasn't a compilation.

Are you talking about random battles?
I thought Tales of Phantasia, Tales of Destiny and Tales of Destiny II all had random battles... Though it has been a while since I played them.

ToP definitely had random battles. I remember that much.

Ah crap. Well, if this game's got them, I'll have to pass. No more random encounters for me. I want to go where I want to go uninterrupted and fight only when I want to. Just tired of the FF recipe.

It really sucks, too, because I love how JRPGs look but this ancient RPG component has got to go away. Give me more of the Eternal Sonata formula.

It does not have random battles....I believe the first one to stop that was Legendia on the PS2...but I definitely know Abyss and Vesperia do NOT have random battles.

BTW, Stu, I ordered my copy from GS.com and by a sick twist of events I have a second copy coming from Amazon.com :(

If anyone is looking for a copy I'll sell it for a couple bucks off.

Vesperia does NOT have random battles, and neither did Symphonia or Abyss. The first few games may have had them, but it's been forever since I played them so I'm not entirely sure.

Eep, I actually got my LE today. I was surprised. The manual is really thick and also reads "limited edition" and not the same as the regular packaged ones.

This game is great, 15 hours in already.

I got the Special Edition too. I wonder what the bonus will be, I went to input the code on the website but it says they don't even know what the bonus is.

Amazon and Game Crazy had it, as well.

I guess there is LE's at a gamestop about 45minutes from me. I'm doubting it though as I'm hving trouble even finding the normal edition.

I found only one copy of the Special edition at Game Crazy (I called them all in my area) then went to Gamestop to buy the guide and they said it was only a Game Crazy release. Do you think this will be hard to find later on?

No the guide is everywhere (sorry) the special edition of the game was a game crazy only release.

Gamestop's website had it and a few Gamestop stores got copies of the SE.

I am now about 5 hours in and wanted to just comment on the conversation system in the game (I do not know if past Tales games had the same feature).

Throughout the adventure you will often get the chance to hit the back button to bring up a brief voiced conversation between your characters represented by animated changing still frame portraits where they might all touch on current events happening or go completely off topic. I just find it more engaging when in the middle of a dungeon when they have a quick little (often pretty funny) conversation to break up the grinding and such.

Anyway just wanted to say that in terms of character development the game is great.

Yep, every Tales game I can think of has something like that. That's why I love Tales, I can remember just about every character and little quirks about them.

The skits are actually better in this game. In the previous ones, they weren't voice-acted... they were just text and pictures. The voices make it soooo much better. :)

They were voiced in the Japanese versions, Namco just decided to be a bunch of cheap asses and not bother voicing them for the US version.

You said what I was going to say. *THUMBS UP* The added Tales content was nice but it was just some anime stills of the characters and text.

After 65 hours, the credits are now rolling. I really enjoyed the game a lot, easily my favorite entry in the Tales series. The story, while light-hearted at first, develops into a more mature, serious affair after a while. All the characters are really likable, and they all go through personal growth and development that further fleshes them out. There are tons of sidequests, many of which I'm saving for a second (and third) playthrough, as I missed a ton of them due to not using a guide. For all the achievement whores reading, the game requires a minimum of two playthroughs, more than likely three.

All in all, I'd say it's right up there with Lost Odyssey as my favorite game on the system. Highly recommended.
