View Full Version : Impossible fix? (Atari 2600)

Well, I found an Atari 2600 in my attic, but it's not the original. I believe it's called, "Ataria 2600 Jr.", but I'm not 100% sure. It's small and thin. I'll try to find a picture of it. Anyways, where you put the cart into the system, there are two small pieces of.... plastic, or whatever it is that (I assume) reads the cart, or connects the cart to the system. The thing is though that one of them is chipped off. Is it unfixable? I was thinking of just junking it. Should I?

Edit: I looked it up on google, and it's called the, "Atari 2600 Jr. Rev. A." Here's a picture:

Those two plastic tabs on either side of the cart connector are used to open the original style Atari carts. The Atari carts have spring loaded dust covers that automatically spring closed when not in use. The two tabs on the system insert into the cart opening it up so the cart can connect into the console. Hopefully that made sense - it was the best I could do to explain it.

I wouldn't junk the console, if you could find something similar to the tab that's still there and glued it in the place where the one broke off, I think you have a solid chance of getting it to work.

I did make sense, and that's saying a lot because I'm not too tech smart. Sounds easy enough, I'll try to look for something. Thanks.

Vectorman0 is right, it is an easy fix. When you glue, just make sure you don't get any glue in the slot (where the game chip fits) or that could be a bigger problem.

OR, and I don't REALLY recommend this one - you could break the dust covers and spring mechanisms off of ALL of your 1st party 2600 carts that have them.

A majority of 3rd party games don't have the dust protection mechanism and those will play fine on your system as-is.

My Atari CX2600 A has both of them broken and I can still insert carts without problem. I only need to push a little harder.

The 2600 has these nubs in a molded plastic shroud that fits over the top of the cartridge slot.

The 2600jr has these nubs molded into the top plastic cover for the 2600jr.

Easy fix: glue a chunk of plastic there to open the cart doors.

Maybe easy fix: find a top cover for a 2600jr. You're about 30 days late for that one from me. I junked a couple of jr systems last month.
