*Poll* What are your favorite modern games and systems? Dreamcast-2008

I thought it would be interesting to see what your personal favorite modern games and systems are. Here's the criteria.

List your top 20 favorite modern games (Dreamcast to present) and your top 5 favorite modern systems (Dreamcast to present). No systems or games older than the Dreamcast will be allowed (i.e. PS, N64 & Saturn etc.). Order is important. List your absolute favorite as #1 and work your way down in that fashion.

For your favorite games, you must list games from atleast 3 different systems and 2 different companies (i.e. Sega, Sony). For your favorite systems, you must list atleast 2 different companies systems. This is to try to eliminate atleast some fanboyism. Post Dreamcast released Arcade, handheld & pc games and systems will be accepted.

As far as popular games that have appeared on multiple systems. I think it would be best to list the exact version to be as accurate as possible. Be sure to identify the exact versions on your lists.

I will count US, Euro and Asian games as the same game if they are on the same system and totally unchanged from region to region. If there is a game that is significantly different in a certain region, just let me know.

Remember, this is your personal favorite games, not which game is best.

The point system:

For games (1-20)
1 = 40 points
2 = 38 points etc...

For systems (1-5)
1 = 40 points
2 = 32 points etc...

Hey cool, I'm glad you are enjoying this stuff. :) I think it's rather interesting myself. I guess the main reason I wanted to try it is because I've read too many times about "best of / top XX" lists on the internet sucking. I think it's mainly because they are probably written up by suits and tie's, when they SHOULD be formed by true blue gamers like ourselves... ;)

I like this thread a lot better than the similar one for classic games--despite the fact that I generally prefer classic games to modern ones, lists of the best/everyone's favorite classic games have been done to death, but there's still some room for experimentation and new titles with newer games. I had thought about starting a thread of the ten best games of last generation (Dreamcast, PS2, Xbox, GameCube only), but figured I'd give the PS2 a little more time to pooter out before starting that one up.

That said, here is my list from Dreamcast until now, following the rules of the thread, as it stands today:

Some thoughts on my lists:

1) I tend to like the original versions of games better than their next-gen upgrades or rereleases with new features and stuff, which is why the original Disgaea and Guitar Hero are on the list rather than their "better," later releases. The exception to this rule is Culdcept Saga, where I much appreciated the upgrades from the still very good PS2 version.

2) The PSP beat out the Wii, Xbox, and 360 on my favorite systems list despite not having any games in my top twenty because I think there are more good games on it, and the average game quality on it is better than the Wii, Xbox, or 360. Work Time Fun, Parodius Portable (import only), and Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles just missed being on this list, and all probably fall in my 21-25 zone.

3) It seems a relatively safe bet that Disgaea 3 will be on here in the near future. As of this writing, I have only had it for a day and a half and have only put three hours into it, but I love it so far, and am totally stuck up the ass of the Disgaea franchise.

4) I felt kind of weird about putting the PS2 at the top of my systems list, as I was never really affectionate for it as a system. I bought mine a month or two after launch (and it never broke on me; I traded it in a month or two ago when I got my 60gb PS3), but didn't buy any games for it for a year or two. Affection-wise, the system I like the best is by far the GBA. I love that thing. But games-wise, the PS2 clearly has it beat, as does the DS.

Very true that classic game lists have been done to death. BUT, they are nearly all done on major gaming sites. Who really knows what their criteria is!? You know? Do they just round up 5 guys in the office that day and scribble down their favorite games and call it a list? I wouldn't doubt it. ;) Another thing is, I think a lot of lists have certain games at the top just because they are supposed to be there, not so much relying on if they are actually a favorite with REAL gamers...you know? That's why I reitterate to everyone to make a list of their favorite games, not which games are labeled "the best" by mainstream media etc... I tend to prefer the original version of games myself as well. Especially if I bought the original around the time of its release.

Probably have forgotten about a bunch of great games on GameCube and Dreamcast that just aren't immediately coming to mind right now...
