View Full Version : How of a player/collector are you?

Like, how much are you into each aspect? I enjoy collecting, but I also don't mind taking a newly acquired mint condition boxed game and popping it in my NES to play it either. I know some people who collect games and refuse to do little more than touch them only for the amount of time it takes to put their games in bags place them in protected storage.

Eh, depends if it's sealed I won't touch it really, I don't like to touch the boxes of games like the NES boxes and such. But the games I don't really care, I guess you should have the cartridge outta the box so when you take it out and doesn't tear it at times.

I'm more of a player honestly. I only buy games that I know I'll want to play. In the case of SNES where the majority of my older boxed games are; I keep the cartridges in plastic cases separate from the boxes to keep them looking fresh and minty, yet help prevent dust from collecting on the connectors too much.

I recently got a factory-sealed copy of Bomb Squad for INTV, and was kinda disappointed to find out it was the real factory seal 'cause I wanted to play it. I don't want to tear into it, because maybe, eventually it will be worth more someday but I don't really want to buy another copy. I only paid $8 for it, so if I can find a loose one for pretty cheap I guess I wouldn't mind buying a second one too much.

But yeah, that's kind of my thoughts on it - I try to avoid factory sealed items (not that I'll turn them down, necessarily) because I like to play my games. Minty boxes and such, I just take the game out and leave it in the dust sleeve among my other games.

I play and enjoy every game I purchase. I make sure I get my money's worth.

as much as I love playing, I can't open a sealed game. Unless of course its an xbox 360/wii sealed game but even then...I tend to buy them used. But if its a sealed game from an older console, Ill just buy a loose copy to play.

90% Gamer.

I only buy games that I wanna play. Cartridge only for nes/snes.
But I would never buy a "greatest hits" game.
Tho I've got 2 sealed games and a few promo discs/releases, "rare" demos etc only for the collection :P

I usually buy complete games these days, old or new, but I try not to buy factory-sealed stuff: I feel *bad* when I open them, especially if it's old. I recently got a Paper Mario for the N64, still sealed, and got it cheaper than the open-but-complete copies elsewhere on eBay. I bought it to play, so I did open it.... but I thought about it for a few days before doing so. Tough choice.

But eventually I decided to open it; my thought was, "why buy a game if you're not going to play it?"

I'm a gamer. I buy games and systems for playing. I don't care if games are boxed, sealed, or even original, as long as I can play them whenever I want to; that's not the case with systems and accessories, but only because if they're well preserved, they'll probably work better.

I gotta say that, after I started visiting these forums, I started to pay a little more attention to these details. But I try not to let it overcome me because, as far as I think collecting for real must be pretty cool, that's not somethng I wanna do.

I guess mainly a player here too. I love collecting whatever I can get my hands on and having a large collection to choose from, but I'm not too much of a stickler for condition (as long as it's playable and preferably for carts, has a good-condition label). Mainly I buy my games to play.

I believe the collecting aspect, to me, is purely just to see what is out there. If I see something and I don't know what it is, if it's cheap, why not buy it? Ofcourse I'll play it, but if it's not good, it usually just sit's on my shelf, or get's sold. I'm pretty much 100% gamer. I do love complete N64 games though, so I change that to 99%. :)

Not big on collecting for collecting's sake. I only buy what I like, or rather what I think I'll like.

So no sports games, and very few driving. A lot of other genres I skip too.

Keep what I like to play, sell/trade the rest. Don't bother keeping boxes/manuals for carts/systems, unless it's something sentimental to me.

I open everything I have, even classics, to play them. The ONLY reason I don't open is if I don't have the time to do so or I forget about it.

Recently picked up three factory sealed SMS games. I am going to slice them open so fast that it will make my head spin!

Will bring back good memories, though... :)

i would have to say that im 50 50. As much as i love to play, i love to look at and collect the games. This is why i dont worry about getting the boxes because all i really want is the game. but boxes for accessories are good

I only collect games that I know I want to play. Unfortunately, I'm so busy these days that I don't have much time to play them. :(

I am more of a player, I pretty much open everything I buy. I do, however, open every game very carefully and try to keep the shrink wrap on it. I do have some sealed games, but only because I havent had the time to play them.

I've been more of a collector as of the last year or two. I keep buying games but only really play a couple regularly, generally until I beat them (and taking my time doing so). At my pace it'd take several life times to beat my library of games, and thus I hope to slow down with buying soon and turn to strictly gaming. With graduation on the horizon and have been working full time it's just too rough to balance gaming into even my hobby life. I'm generally seen more as social personality, hence why a video bought yesterday is more likely to be watched sooner than a single-player Genesis game purchased weeks or months ago. Back logs can really suck too.

I play what I collect, I collect what I play.

That about sums it up. I have recently found my happy medium between collecting and gaming (see other thread about enjoying collecting more) and it is absolutely imperative to be able to play the games and not obsess over them in my personal opinion. Remember what initially brought all of us (well, I would *guess* all of us) to the hobby in the first place...playing games!

Occasional hoarder, but mostly I buy games to play and enjoy them. Sometimes it just takes awhile to get to all of them. I tend to collect game related oddities though, such as the Sonic 10th anniversary box that "came with" Sonic Adventure 2 (which I, of course had to ebay).

I play and collect. If I find a cheap game at Goodwill or a Pawn Shop I'll pick it up even if I don't like it "if the price is right". I pick them up simply because you never know when a friend is gonna come over and see that copy of Shaq-Fu and say "Holy crap I love that game".

It's easier to make time for collecting them than it is to play them. I still haven't figured out a good way to get more playing time in.... I probably only play 2-4 hours a month =( and at that rate with how many games I have I will never need to buy another game again... but I keep doing it =)

I never buy sealed games and boxes are annoying, I keep everything in plastic cases (I guess I only collect loose carts now that I think about it). I used to throw away all the boxes, but since I feel guilty about the trash (and plenty of people yelling at me on here) I just keep them in a big box in the attic and either give them away or sell them w/the game.

I used to collect, but I realized I need to spend money on other things.

So now I just love buying video games that I want to play. :)

I have three different personalities with gaming. I am a player I enjoy the classics as well as the new stuff. I decided to stop being a collector for now. I have too much stuff for my own good. The third is that I am a reseller. I have the ability to buy games at a low cost and resell them. I started with buying old systems of my youth at garage sales (Atari 2600's and SNES's) Now I have everything from Odyssey to Xbox and there comes a point in time I need to get rid of it all. Don't get me wrong I love playing games and what not but I stumbled across the hobby of gaming and now I am looking to go out for a while. I want to play some of the newer stuff that I really want to play on the wii or 360...Sorry for my little rant there. Though with paragraph I am going to start making lists to sell everything so be prepared for that. :pimp:

I play what I have time to play. My problem is that I acquire faster than I play. I am playing Spore, and I am going to get a SNES repro, I just bought Condemned 2 for 360, I also have the Titan AE demo I am going to play, same with Jack brothers, TrickN Snowboard. I got all of this within a 2-3 week period and I am playing spore. I want to the others as well, but that is how I end up with sealed games (I just get them faster than I play them).

I am a collector/gamer/seller at the same time.

I have sold very interesting pieces of video game collectibles and keep many more for my personal collection.

I love RPGs and try in almost every genre :D

I'm more of a player than collector. Since I can't bring myself to collect a game if I have no desire to play it. I try not to go overboard with collecting games though, as my current salary is modest.

I only collect to play. I want everything to be at least cib, so that's why I don't have that much of a collection yet. I don't pass up on FS games when I do find one for cheap though (only goes for pre ps2). For those I just buy a loose cart or something to play the game, I do not have the heart to open a FS game.

I do keep the games that have cardboard boxes seperate, since I find it tedious to open the boxes, and damaging them would cause me emotional distress probably. Depends on the game though, those I rarely play I keep in the boxes. Those I do play are in various places around my room since I don't have the storage space to put them in a box yet.
