View Full Version : Which game made best use of the Super Gameboy?

As we all know, when you inserted compatible games into a Super Gameboy, you'd gain something extra. Usually it was either better colorization, or a custom background. Some games added a little more. For example, in Donkey Kong, you could hear Pauline scream "Help! Help!" at the beginning of every level (instead of "Mlawlll! Mlawlll! like it was in a Gameboy).

Which game benefited the most from the Super Gameboy?

My vote is for Street Fighter II. Street Fighter II added a custom background for each of the stages in the game. If the GB game was Ryu's stage, then the SGB border would change to Ryu's stage as it appeared in the SNES version of the game. If you won against Ryu and fought Chun-Li, the SGB border would change to Chun-Li's SNES stage. Impressive!

But wait, there's more. This is the only game that I know of that allows you to play 2 player using one GB cart. Plug the cart into a Super Gameboy, have two controllers plugged in, and you can play two player battles. To my knowledge, this is the only SGB game that allows for this.

What are some others worth suggesting?

Donkey Kong IMO.

I have that Street Fighter II and the game is just so choppy. I made sure I didn't lose any of it (box, wrapper, receipt, etc) as I knew I would sell it one day. Still haven't though.

SFII is a little choppy, but you get used to it. I've always been impressed with the game despite the frame rate.

Update: I just tried World Heroes 2 Jet on my SGB. It also allows you to play 2 player on one console. It doesn't do the cool background switching that SFII does though. I tried to get my Samurai Spirits cart to work, but there might be a region lock or something. It won't play.

Space Invaders is a huge & obvious one since it contained the entire SNES version built in as well.

I don't know if any other SGB game did that (if so, please enlighten me) :)

Wow! I had no idea! I think we've got a winner right here! That makes GREAT use of the SGB :D :D :D

Here is a video review of the SGB that includes Space Invaders. The guy's a knob, but the video itself is pretty good for informational purposes.

This video also shows that Killer Instinct (GB) allows for two player battles on one GB cart too.

While I wouldn't say that it made the best use of the SGB, Donkey Kong Land had a rendered jungle border.

Wario Blast is another one allowing for Super Game Boy multiplayer, only in this case up to four players are supported courtesy of a SNES multitap. Pretty groovy stuff, and the Super Game Boy enchancement transforms the game into a serviceable Bomberman fix as opposed to the dull single player experience it was on Game Boy. It gets my vote.

+1 on Space Invaders. They did some nice voodoo there.

Megaman 5 gets my official vote.

I belive Joust/Defender has some full-screen features, and Joust has 2 player.

Toshinden allowed two player with one cart using the Super Gameboy. The borders I think simply had some Toshinden characters standing on a green field.

Donkey Kong, without a doubt.

I'm gonna have to go with Donkey Kong, as well. It was the main reason I even bought the Super Gameboy.

That Space Invaders clip was most impressive. I thought I could be content with a GBA adapter on the Gamecube but I may have to invest in another SNES/SGB combo to check some of this out firsthand.
