A couple of years ago, my friend Josh Lesnick wrote a very comprehensive list of Pac-Man games for my site, including over two dozen entertaining reviews. I'd like to build on the success of this article with one of my own reviewing the many Space Invaders games Taito has released in the past 25 years. I'm compiling a list right now, but I'll need help to ensure that it's complete.
Here's what I've got right now. If you can think of any games I've missed, please tell me and I'll add them to the list. I've included two different columns... games designed or licensed by Taito (in other words, official releases), and clones designed by rival game manufacturers. The latter list will be much more limited, including one or two games designed by game console manufacturers who couldn't afford the Space Invaders license.

Wasn't Alien Invasion for Channel F a space invaders clone? All the screens I've seen make it look like a clone...

I'm pretty sure that there were two versions of Space Invaders for the GameBoy (not Color.) The one that was enhanced for Super GameBoy, and one that predated it. I remember seeing the two side by side at TRU a while back. However, I didn't see the actual boxes... it was back when they didn't put the actual games on the shelves, when they just had pictures of them on the wall, and you had to take a coupon to the checkout counter to buy one. They both were advertised separately, and the earlier one was $10 cheaper. So I don't think that they were advertising the same game by mistake. Does any one know more about this?

I just did a quick search for the other Space Invaders game for GameBoy on ebay, but there wasn't one listed.

There is also a Space Invaders game for GameBoy Advance.

Before you think I'm trying to come off as an "expert".. I'm very much not. I'm just a guy who grew up lovin' Space Invaders and still does. :D (so if anyone has any corrections, put 'em in) :)

Anyway, don't forget when you're talking about the original upright arcade games for Space Invaders "proper", there were basically 4 (not counting the two player Space Invaders 2, and the large number of bootlegs, clones, etc.)

1. Midway Space Invaders
2. Taito Space Invaders
Basically the same game, but the Jap and U.S. version had similar, but obviously different artwork and game BACKGROUND. Also the Midway cab used buttons for control whereas the Taito used a two-way joystick. The Taito version is arguably the superiour cabinet in design :P You can occasionally find the Taito Version in the states

Then...
3. Midway Space Invaders Deluxe
4. Taito Space Invaders Part II

These had different cabinets as well but the Taito version is almost unheard of in the states thus most people have never seen it. The Midway version had a much darker "moonbase" background, with the typical button controls and artwork, while the Taito version had a a red sky w/ blue moonbase, Joystick control, and was again arguably a much nicer cab. :) Also unlike the first Space Invaders, there are a couple of differences in gameplay. Mainly the point value of the flashing saucer was changed from 500 pts to 200pts in the U.S. version, Also the invaders split on the 2nd level as opposed to on the 4th level in the Japanese version.

The classic mirrored upright cab for Taito Space Invaders part II never made it to the U.S. shores as far as I can tell. However it did come over in cocktail form which was in color. You can tell the roms supported by Mame for SI part II are from the cocktail version because of that color. The upright Space Invaders Part II was black and white and there is no known rom dump if I recall...

Would Galaxian and Galaga be considered Space Invaders clones? They sure are nearly completely derived from it...

Thanks for the help, everyone!
I'm looking more for straight Space Invaders clones, rather than derivitives. Because of this, Galaga and Galaxian won't be on the list. It's tough to even include Alien Invaders: Plus! for this reason, but it is the closest thing the Ody2 has to a Space Invaders game.
