The ESA is rumored to return E3 to it's former glory next year after complaints from many in the game industry about the current incarnation: http://www.gamedaily.com/articles/news/rumor-e3-may-open-to-the-public/

It's just a rumor but it would be nice if it came true. Of course Pax and TGS do pretty well with their game shows but theres nothing like the E3 from back in the day(a whole 3 years ago because the last "real" one 2 years ago didn't allow booth babes).

I'd be happy with going back to the original. I only went once but it was a blast.

I think that the possibility of there ever being another old school style E3 is zero. There has been a great deal of consolidation in the industry in just the past three years and frankly, there are so many other trade and public shows out there that the willingness of any of the medium sized developers to put much into showing at E3 is a lot lower than it was a couple of years ago. The fact that they are talking about opening it up to the public is a sign of desperation in my opinion and even more proof that this won't be anything like E3 used to be.

the door of opportunity has came and went. They had a chance after the dismal 07 year to make it better. 08 just seemed to be the last nail in the coffin. With great gaming shows like PAX in the back yard of both MS and Nintendo, I dont see E3 being a great show to show off games anymore. E3 for all purposes, is dead.
