What a find at the garage sales this weekend!

What do you guys think? I, personally, had no idea there was this very rare 3rd variation on the Gunsmoke artwork! @_@ Was it worth the $40?

$40? I just saw this same cart go on eBay for nearly $200. Hell of a deal man - I see this one is missing from the DP guide, I'm sure Joe would love to hear about it.

Yeah, I agree with theChad, awesome deal at $40.

Probably could sell for four or five times that on eBay. @_@

Still, it is amazing to see the lengths people will go.

Well, thanks for the helpful replies guys! There has been one on eBay recently? Maybe it's not as rare as I thought. :(

Seriously though, I did find this at a garage sale.. This isn't some funny work I did on my own.. I paid a buck for it but it's well worth that to have something to have something so ridiculously atrocious, probably the worst I've ever come across. I thought the (what I'm guessing is) white out was a real nice touch. Still though, I suppose I should actually check to see if the game works. Maybe it's a RaRe ProTO.

On second thought maybe I wont test it. This game just gives me bad vibes like some kind of The Ring type scenario is gonna happen. Y'know.. If I start the game I'll get a phone call that says I have 7 days to live.

Maybe I'll just stuff it in a box for a few years and think about it. Ah, video game collecting. That's the good life!

If anyone else has any atrocities to share rivaling this one, post em up.

That's awesome. Somewhere way back in my blog there's a similar fan-made label of a Sega CD game (sadly my brain sucks and I don't remember exactly which game) done in very similar fashion. RaR Pro-TO indeed!

I was initially going to point to that, as this reminded me of your blog. But, my brain sucks just as bad if not worse...so...

I bet you got screwed and it's really a SMB/DH.

I've heard about this cart -- it was the Nigerian bank account scammers' first attempt at separating people and their money. They were originally going to sell Combats as Pitfall IIs but they couldn't develop the tech in time.

Actually the phone call will probably be them thanking you for taking something else that the other 8,000 people at the garage sales passed on. Then they'll ask you if you'd like some other "rare variant" Nes cartridges.

I believe the game that Joe speaks of was Hook on Sega CD, complete with fan-art of a pirate hook. XD

LOL, today has been a pretty depressing day, but this topic has managed to cheer me up. :) Good show indeed! I will be sure to keep an eye out for this rare variation of Gun Smoke, in my neighborhood.

I have Charlie Miller's copy of Mega Man 2. I have no idea who Charlie Miller is but after buying his game at Funcoland back in the mid 90's I, for some reason, couldn't bring myself to clean off his signature from the back of the cart. It's become a collectible for me in some strange bizarro world kind of way. I have the same freaky attachment to other people's game saves I find sitting on cartridges I purchase.

If anybody knows Charlie Miller let him know I have his game and I'd like to meet him.

I never take names off the carts I buy to keep either. Same for rental place stickers. It just adds to the charm :)

Yeah, it was Hook, I remember that message as well. Stuff like this is always funny! :)

You should try out the cart at least. If you sell it on ebay and it turns out to be Where's Waldo or something horrible, then you'll be eaten by monkies.

btw guy above me , you should say 'totemo', 'geemu' instead of 'bideo geemu' and 'tanosii' or 'sugee/sugoi' or something in ur sig.

I Just spoke to Charlie Miller and he wants his "fucking game back now, you thief! I'm gonna kill you! You killed my brother!"

I don't do drama, so I just gave him your address.

The original Gun Smoke had the black border all the way around the label, not just on the right. I think you bought a bootleg there.

Haha, I could never toss it on ebay so it doesn't matter too much if it works or even if it's really gunsmoke for that matter. Games like these are extremely rare finds, perhaps once in a lifetime. This is a showpiece! :)

Although I suppose if it weren't Gunsmoke that would be rather ironic.

It's funny because I'd have absolutely no problem trading him his game back for another copy of Mega Man 2. I'd even sign it myself underneath his name so maybe sometime in the future he could be telling his grandchildren, "Listen, younguns! Years ago I traded in a copy of Mega Man 2 to Funcoland. And the guy who bought it held onto it for over 10 years! Because I signed my name to the cart he tracked me down and I got my game back after all that time. So the moral of the story, kids, is sign all your shit!"

I genuinely think I'm mental at times. For instance, I recently bought a copy of Final Fantasy Adventure. Wouldn't you know that I absolutely refuse to delete this other guy's saves? I have no idea who this person is. The game could have been sitting in Gamestop for 8 years for all I know. But it's like I own a piece of his soul or something and feel obligated to keep that part of him alive within this cartridge. You'd think I found a diary entry written by George Washington and feel the need to preserve it for the sake of history.

I like "snooping" in the save-game files when I buy a used PSX memory card. Sometimes I'll fire up the game using the other guy's save, just to see how he was doing. A bit off-topic....I'm finding lots of games in the wild these days that have cheat codes written on little pieces of paper, stuck in the instruction manuals.
