I was given a PS2 Slim that whenever I leave the lid closed and turn on the power, it makes a grinding noise that comes from the lens area. I see the dashboard and everything, and when I open the lid, I hear the noise as I see the lens try to move up and then moves down and the noise stops. I close the lid, and the same thing happens once more. It's a never ending cycle.

I thought about replacing the lens. I came to this conclusion because I had a spare assembly tray for the lens and a spare lens itself. I replaced the entire tray and it worked! No grinding noise whatsoever. Then I thought about replacing the lens only with the previous owners lens...the grinding noise commenced.

So I thought it could be the lens. So I purchased a few (spares for myself) and proceeded to replace the lens. Removed anti-static point successfully. Replaced lens...and the damn thing grinds AGAIN!!

So ok, could it be something is stuck?

What can it be?

Just take the PS2 apart and disasemble the drive as much as possible (like easy stuff mainly the teeth that move the laser). Put back together, might work again. This is what I did when mine started doing this. I think its just the laser not seated quite properly on the teeth rail bar thing.

ahh the old tear down rebuild method. I have to say it works wonders on a flakey pc so i'd assume the same for a ps2.

It just wont work.

I've disassembled the entire thing like three times, and I always get the grinding noise.

Any ideas?
