I was hoping that I'd be able to acquire a PlayStation or Dreamcast game today (if not both).
While I wasn't able to get a Dreamcast game, I did manage to get a PS1 game - RayTracers.
Here's to 13 years and over 80 games in my PS1 collection (http://www.freewebs.com/jkwh/pslist.html). :)

Here's to the only console I ever collected for.
200+ games and counting, started in mid 2003.
Even though I own many consoles and games for each (including a PS3), the PSX is the only console that I actually collect for. I enjoy playing original PSX games with the actual Sony Digital controller (I buy them whenever I see them in the wild), not the Dual Shock. What a killer little machine it was. So may fantastic gaming franchises are on this thing. I treasure my copy of Tomba!. I can't count the number of hours spend playing Turismo in all of it's pixelated splendour. The above post reminded me that I also have to hunt down a copy of Ray Tracers. That was a cool game.

One of the finest and most awesome systems ever created. I love me some Playstation. Happy Birthday, you. *blows kisses*
I'm gonna have to play some Intelligent Qube, Vib Ribbon, and Namco Museum soon.

The Playstation was the first console I started actively collecting. I still have massive amounts of games and accessories for the thing. It was truly a turning point in video game history.
Here's to you, PSX!

Well, I guess I better sink some time into Skullmonkeys tonight. God, I can't believe it's really been 13 years since the little grey box landed on these shores.
I remember the first time I actually got to wrap my grubby paws around a PSX controller and try In the Hunt, Ridge Racer, and MKIII. The sharp visuals, wild amounts of color, and killer sound really blew me away. It honestly feels like yesterday when Tekken tournaments were a daily occurence and Twisted Metal was as good as gaming got.
Man, between the DC anniversary and the PSX hitting 13 years old, I'm starting to feel ancient.

Looks like I'll have to go home and fire up some Medievil. Unfortunately, it'll have to be on my PS3 as my original bit the dust some time ago and I'm too lazy/cheap to fix it or buy a new one.

I'd like to applaud Sony for the Net Yaroze project. I think it was an interesting direction for the company to take and it certainly helped some individuals get into the development industry. Home coding for the masses without the need for any hacking, all with official support and community.

It's funny but I didn't like the PlayStation when I bought it the first time, and now it's one of my favorites.
My first PlayStation game was a pre-owned copy of Marvel Superheroes, and that game was the reason why I bought the system in the first place since playing Marvel Superheroes in the arcade was the highlight of my senior prom night. I just didn't get what all the hype was about and I remember returning the PS1 or maybe I traded it in...
Years later, once the PSone was released with the screen, I finally got back into it and by then, you could buy games for $10 or less. I think this was when you could buy used Greatest Hits games for as low as $2 from Gamestop. By the second time around with the system, I finally got what the hype was about.

Here's to the system with quite possibly the greatest third-party support the industry has seen, and still the console I predominantly play. :)

I spent a good chunk of last night dusting off some titles that hadn't got any play in years: Jumping Flash 2 and Fear Effect. Still just as fun as I remember, Jumping Flash is as addicting as candied bacon, though it looks very dated the game has a ridiculous amount of personality.
Fear Effect is a true gem that I can't believe I never played through. The gritty cyberpunk setting combined with an excellent visual style really helps pull you in to the grim adventure. Hopefully I'll have some more time to sink into it tonight, as I really think I'll want to actually finish the game this go round.
Discworld is probably next on my classic PS1 hit list.

...playing Marvel Superheroes in the arcade was the highlight of my senior prom night.
That may be one of the sadest things I have heard. Why didn't you go out and get laid like the rest of your class?
(Back on topic)
I remember getting Resident Evil and thinking, games will never look better than this. I played alittle RE to celebrate the PSX (and game franchise) that put Sony on the map.

I remember playing Ridge Racer when I visited a friend who had an import system when they had just come out. He also had the first Motor Toon and I think Raiden Project. I later played Ridge Racer at another friend's house late into the night.
Good times....
Cheers,
Ben

Ha! You know, I always get so wrapped up and involved in that game, that when I eventually do bite it and get smashed/fall over the edge, it always damned near gives me a heart attack. The tension is delicious!

It isn't as sad as it sounds. There was an arcade in Virginia Beach called Flipper McCoy's that I always liked going to, and that was the last time I remember going there.
Truthfully, I didn't even want to go to my senior prom, and my stupid family wouldn't shut up about it, so I went with a friend's little sister who was a freshman. And trying to get some when you're broke and don't even have a car when you're a teenager isn't very easy. Besides, all the girls at my high school were money-hungry *****es.
Anyway, college more than made up for it, and I still get some every few months nowadays as long as the video game collection stays hidden. I usually hear, "What's in all these cardboard boxes?" My answer is that I just moved into my apartment. ;)

The Playstations greatest acomplishment was showing that cd based games is a great media. There were some hiccups like the mortal combat morph but man it was special to see just what next game would wow us.

I remember coming back from a vacation in Vegas in 95 and was just too overwhelmed by the screenshots shown in Gamefan and EGM that I went to an import shop in NYC when I got back home and bought my first import system and games. I bought a Playstation, Ridge Racer and Tekken, rushed home, and found my bigger TV in my living room had the "horizontal-hold" problem some of the early Playstations had. Luckily, it played perfectly in my own room and I was captivated right from the start :) Happy birthday PSX!

The Playstation is one of my top three favorite systems and it's the console I have the most games for(200 plus), most imports for(100 plus) and most demos for(hundreds). I like it alot and I'm glad it brought games into the mainstream and made them more appealing to the adult market. Also of note, my original Playstation from 1998 still works perfectly today. Goooooooo PS1!!!

...OK, then!
Happy birthday to the first system that was really for the masses. Before PSX gaming was "for kids", but the PSX got alot of 'non gamers' to play for the first time.

i disagree
lots of people that were in their 20's and 30's had played Atari and NES in their youth, they picked up a PSX in their early adulthood. i wouldnt call that demographic 'non gamers'. it was the first time that young adults were targeted in the game market, but they had been gamers in their past.

I got one when it came out cause it became very obvious very quickly that EVERYONE was getting one... EVERYONE was E to get their hands on what had EGM pissing all over itself... so I knew that it would get a ton of exclusive games that wouldn't appear on the Saturn or the 3DO, and I already owned both of those systems, plus the Genesis, Sega CD, 32X, SNES, Game Gear, Virtual Boy, Jaguar, Jaguar CD, and was looking forward to getting an N64 as soon as it came out too... so as much as I hated to support the system that I somehow knew even then would end up killing the Saturn, I went ahead and got one just like everyone else did, so I wouldn't regret missing out on what all the hype was about...
and boy am I glad I did! I would've felt as out of the crowd as I do over missing out on the XBOX & the PS2... and I would've missed out on what happened to the Need for Speed franchise after it killed the Saturn & 3DO... I still missed out on a ton of great games for it, cause there were just too many to try and keep up with all of them, while trying to keep up with all the other systems still competing with each other at the time, but I did manage to adjust my collecting strategies enough to accomodate it more than most...
I started out with the policy that I would always choose the Saturn version over the PS version whenever possible, as I preferred the far more crisp graphics that the Saturn offered over the blurrier graphics of the PS... plus I still was fiercely loyal to Sega, even though I had succumbed to being less of a fanboy, in favor of having more diverse gaming options... and of course I bought all the exclusives as soon as it became obvious that a Saturn version of those games would never happen... and I still ended up with a ton of games for it... far more than I own now, after being forced to change my policy a bit more to accomodate the uber expensive N64 and all its games...
so the N64 came out, and I kept up with it until Donkey Kong 64 came out with the RAM upgrade, and then new games were coming out for it so quickly that I simply couldn't keep up with all the games for all the systems that I was collecting for at that point... so something had to change, and I decided very reluctantly that the N64 was gonna have to go, cause I could buy at least TWO games for any other console for what I was paying for just ONE N64 game... I think this is part of the reason why the PS killed cartridges, as well as the N64... even though the N64 had much better graphics than the PS did, as I learned after buying the PS versions of N64 games that I had before I sold them all... the N64's graphics were alot more blurry than the Saturn's graphics too, but you had to love the lack of CD loading times!
anyhow, so I sold my N64 and all its games so I could still keep up with the PS and everything else, and later I sold about half of the PS games that I had so I could keep up with the Dreamcast when it came out... and I really regret having to change my PS policy to exclude all the RPG's, but they just started coming out with way too many RPG's for me to keep up with, and I was never really a huge fan of RPG's, although I still love all the ones I have for all my other systems, which are still more than enough... and I did keep Tactics Ogre, as soon as I realized that it was a sequel to Ogre Battle, and I could justify keeping it for that reason... by then my new policy was that I could keep any game that was a sequel to any game on another console, which was a very wise choice, because by then all the sequels were coming out exclusively on the PS... and of course I made some exceptions for a few PS exclusives that were just too cool to miss out on, which very fortunately turned out to be all the rarest of the rares that aren't Lightspan games...
so I still ended up with hundreds of games for it, and I'm very proud to own what I still own for it... there's still a few prohibitively expensive rares that I haven't been able to get for it yet, as well as a few other titles that I'd really like to add to my collection, but even if I never get the rest of what I'd like to get for it, I still have enough that I'm very happy for sticking with it, and I still have more for it than most people who collect exclusively for it have!
BTW, my original unit still works, and has never had any overheating problems like some of the very first units had... I guess I was extremely lucky... but I also never played it CONSTANTLY, as I have tons of other systems to play...
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, PS1! I still love you, and I'm glad we're still great friends!

I still have my launch system and it still works like new. I still use it to play imports using the disc swap method.
