It is when I see Dreamcast and PS1 anniversary announcements that I remember that it was this same month in 1991 that Digital Press was founded.

Kevin and I had decided that summer to put some kind of newsletter together with the intent to seek out "retro gamers" and others who collected the older games that had already been forgotten. Genesis and SNES were brand new. NES was in its final days. And we were STILL playing Atari 2600 games every Sunday when we would get together.

Kevin was a great organizer and I was the "mouthpiece". We came up with the name DIGITAL PRESS because it was the most generic thing we could think of, yet also professional-sounding. This would serve us well as we campaigned to game companies to send us review copies, or to professionals who we were trying to get our message out to.

It's funny when I think back to that time. No e-mail. No INTERNET. Communication was always by letter or by phone. And yet, we managed to find quite a LOT of others like us.

17 years later, Kevin would be proud.

Happy birthday to the entirety of DP! I still have the 10th anniversary t-shirt. :)

And indeed: Kevin would be proud of all that was accomplished. Joe, you certainly honored him well.

Oh my...I had heard something about this years ago, but I never thought it was him...

Definitely, he would be proud. No...he IS proud. In a way, his legacy lives on...

Definitely, happy birthday DP...and I hope you have many more years to come... :)

Wow, that long eh? Congratulations on the longevity. It's definitely a time to toast. Very few last that long, let alone half as long. As a webmaster going on almost 2 years, I can relate somewhat with regards to feeling proud of starting something I believe strongly enough in to share with the masses out there who are willing to come take a peek.

Cheers DP, and congrats on 17 years.

Ahh..1991. I was actually communicating with my fellow gamers via DDial (Diversi Dial...The Jungle with a whopping 8 nodes!) and mine/other C64 BBS forums. And of course the phone was the big one.

I wish I knew you and Kevin back then. Would have been great to witness the birth of DP....and play some 2600 with you both :)

With how massive DP has become (just in the years I have known it...maybe 10 or so?) I am sure Kevin would be more than mighty proud. Long live DP...Happy Birthday good buddy!

Yup, my best buddy! I really miss him. That's the sad thing about anniversaries of all kinds - those we most want to share them with are not always among us. I'm pretty sure that he'd be satisfied to see what we've done. Still, I just can't fathom how much farther we would have gone if he was here this whole time.

Joe, I know he would be proud.

You have a store, a booming community of people with you, your own gaming convention, seriously dude, look at what DP has become.

I have only been here for about 4 years (almost 5) and since then, I have grown to know many individuals here. Without DP, I would still be collecting on my own without ever knowing anything about any other video game collector. This is the place that introduced me to even calling myself a collector.

Happy B-Day DP!

Happy birthday to Digital Press.

So, in 2011, it will be again a special anniversary... I wonder if there will be another special event or game release for the occasion.

Er, I mean, Happy Birthday! I still remember when you were selling a bunch of games, and I wonder if I'd have killed Digital Press before it was ever born if I could have afforded to buy them all...

Just think, next year DP will be able to go out cruising with its friends and not need an adult over 25 in the car!

Happy Birthday to the best time sync (and dating/marriage site) on the intarwebz!

Still the most comfortable gaming site on the internet. Nothing else even comes close to matching it's "vibe". Dirty old carts and nicotine stained consoles galore.

You've been around since '91? Damn, Digital Press is almost as old as me. I remember back in '91 I didn't have cable and never heard of the internet. But I had my Nes and I was happy. Wait, I might have had my Genesis too. Anyway, happy b-day. Here's to the next 17.
