So I've been looking at a few Japanese PS1 titles.
(Ore no Ryouri and Pepsiman, mostly)

Now I'm not sure about Pepsiman, but I know that Ore no Ryouri doesn't have a history of working well with boot discs and mod chips, so my question is what is the best boot disc I could get that can bypass mod protection?

Also, what Playstation Underground demo disc had Ore no Ryouri on it?

Try the action replay.
Prep your PS2 as if you are using the swap magic and you are good to go!
It boots every Japanese PS1 game I own on my slim without an issue.

Yeah, but I have an original model. Will it still work, and does it need codes? Or does it just have an option for playing Japanese games?

I am very sure it would work the same way.
Just prep it for use with a slide card, and you should be fine!
As for playing the games themselves, just swap and select play without codes. (no other step is needed)
One thing, though: when you get to the swap screen, you have to press X twice for some reason, I don't know why.

Well, I found a PS-X-Change V2 and it can play mod protected games, all it requires is putting a spring inside the disc tray.

You can use a Game Enhancer 9(looks like the original PS Gamesharks) that hooks up to the back of your PS and it comes with a spring to insert under the lid:http://sadbuttru.tripod.com/userguide4.htm. There will still be region locked games but you can bypass them with codes you put into the Game Enhancer. I wasn't sure by your post if you were looking to play the PSOne imports on an original Playstation or a PS2 but, loooking at the replies, it looks like you want to play them on a PS2. IF you were gonna just play them on a PSOne, I second the Action Replay. I have had it for the longest time now and it has booted up every import I have thrown at it flawlessly. As for playing the PSone imports on the PS2, I'm not too sure. I have Swap Magic but I believe the discs don't boot up PSOne import games, correct?

Bah, no need for a specialized boot disc for PSOne.

Get a GameShark or CodeBreaker. It does the same thing and much more.

Oh, and I'm using a PS1 to play it, so I'll probably just get the PS-X-Change V2.

Using an AC with a PSOne is hit or miss.
Biohazard Gun Survivor goes to the mod-chip warning screen if I try to boot it.
Oddly, the PS2 does not have that problem when it boots that certain game with the AC.

The only import game my Gameshark would successfully boot up was All Japan Pro Wrestling. But a Game Enhancer 9 is essentially a Gameshark with more perks. Not only can you play imports and imput cheat codes---you can also view still-game images and read the disc serial numbers.

I use one of these on my PSOne ... I have yet to encounter a burn, import or region locked game that won't boot, and even if I did, it has built in Gameshark/Action replay codes to bypass things like Anti Mod-Chip screens.

This model disc won't work in a PS2, but if you have a PSX or PXOne you're golden.

And they're pretty cheap these days if you can find them. Usually around $10.

Figured I would bump this rather than make a new one, I just need to make sure that Ore No Ryouri works with the PS-X-Change V2.

While I can't verify 100% that it'll work, I've used the PSX-Change discs for years and I have yet to encounter anything that won't run on them.

The only compatibility issues I could find on the web were the V.1 discs had issues with Valkyrie Profile and Metal Slug 1 (J).

I've a PSX-Change2 too....And I did had a few problems while playing some Japanese imports on my original PS1 system with it. In some games, it didn't let me watch the game final ending , the game would usually crash right before that, while all of the rest gameplay until that particular point would be fine, including cheats and all....Later, I got a stealth chip...No problems since...

Nah.

I simply pop in the Codebreaker or Gameshark, then go to the MUSIC submenu. I choose STOP to make it stop spinning, switch discs, then select BOOT and viola! It works!

Of course, you need the spring thing or the holder thingie for PSOne consoles.
