I recently purchased a brand new Lynx 1 (original model) on ebay. The system was definitely brand new. It is the most perfect looking Lynx I have seen since I purchased mine new at Babbages back when it was released. The protective plastic was still on the screen, and all cables were wrapped up.

I started playing the system using the included power adapter, and noticed that the screen semes to "bleed" on the games. Furthermore, half of the screen (actually, a little less than half) on the left side is darker than the other half. It is actually perfectly split between light and dark with a line going from top to bottom of the screen. It does not make the games unplayable, but it is a little annoying. Screen going?

But that is not the BIG problem. The real problem I have found is that the system does not want to work with batteries! After playing Chips Challenge for a few minutes I decided to proceed to testing the battery compartment. This is where things get sticky...literally.

I did notice that the box to the system was faded on one side. Like blue color faded....the same fading you experience when something such as a box is exposed to extreme sunlight for years. I can guarantee this is what has happened here. Back to the battery compartment. When I opened it I found that the protective foam that is glues to the compartment door was completely melted. It was like tar to the touch. I took the door off and with much work got the melted foam crap completely off. Popped in some fresh batteries (brand new Duracell right out of the box) and went to power it on. Nothing. I could have sworn I heard the speaker pop for a second (like when it does power on) but then nothing.

I double checked that the batteries were in according to correct polarity, and they are. I double checked the batter compartment and see absolutely no signs of any damage...everything looks brand new. I am at a loss here. I have never had a handheld system work with power supply but not work with batteries before.

Could something have damaged due to heat exposure? I must stress that NOTHING looks like it has been damaged....except for that foam thing which is gone now. It is such a shame, as this is the most perfect Lynx I have encountered in recent years and while I will probably be playing it mostly with the AC (due to the poor battery life), I would still like to have the option of a portable actually BEING portable. Any help is appreciated.

Nevermind on the battery problem! Don't know why, but I just tried it again and it now works....odd. Maybe I didn;t have them pressed down hard enough the first (and second) time around. Anyway, still have the screen issue..but I am guessing the screen is just old. Or does anyone else have this issue?

EDIT: The screen seems to slowly be coming back to life. I am noticing that the more I have it on the less the bleeding is occuring. Maybe it is just waking up from its decade and a half sleep :) Strange the things that happen to devices when they are not used for a very long time...
