According to Kotaku, at least. (http://kotaku.com/5050840/sega-working-on-mystery-rpg) I'm kinda hoping that it's a new IP and that it's not an SRPG, as I'm really not big on those. People on the comments section of the article seem to think it's related to Dragon Force due to "dragon" being in the URL, so we'll see.

There's been a rumor of Skies of Arcadia 2 being announced this year at the Tokyo Game Show (or whatever it's called). Even though an original IP would be good, I'd be all over this one.

I am not getting a Dragon Force vibe from this at all.
I do get a Dragon Crystal vibe based on how dated the music sounds, however.

Dragon Crystal? Wasn't that a nethack clone on the SMS?

*blinks* there was a nethack clone on a console? Why did no one tell me this?

Okay, so I just watched the "trailer" and the music in the second part sounds very SMS/Game Gear influenced. My God, if it is Dragon Crystal or heck, even a new IP that takes it in the same direction, I think I will be able to forgive Sega for every atrocious game they've put out in the last 5 years.

Isn't the reveal date just 9 days from now? Can'twaitcan'twaitcan'twait.

Yes sir (and ma'am), Dragon Crystal was a Rogue-like dungeon crawler on the Master System and Game Gear (I prefer the Game Gear version, because a) it's portable and b) the music is 10x better, give or take a factor). You collected weapons, potions, magic scrolls, etc. which had to be identified (usually by using them), just like in Rouge/Nethack. Also, the game compromised of going from floor to floor deeper inside the "dungeon", also a dungeon crawler standard (the Game Gear version had 30 "floors" and then you beat the game, I'm not sure how many the Master System had). Also, last but not least, every level of every game was completely randomized. There were some standard parts to each level, of course, but item placement, monster placement and floor layout were always randomized every time.

If you've ever played Gateway To Apshai, it's the same concept (of course, given that Apshai was a Rogue-like as well). Except Dragon Crystal was able to better it even more in some aspects (like the complete randomization, while Apshai had standard levels to choose from).

If Sega announce a new SoA for PS3 or the Wii, my underwear will need changing rather promptly.

Heaven help us if Sega forces another Skies of Arcadia upon the industry.

Needed to balance out the lovers with a dose of DISDAIN.

All those little red flowers... aren't those cherry-blossoms? Sakura Taisen, perhaps? Although that wouldn't explain the 8-bit music.

Who the hell are you? I didn't know anyone there was a fan of pants. Actually I didn't think anyone liked pants; we just wear them because we have to.

I still enjoy it, probably because I've been there so long. And the forum layout is great.

The SMS version has 30 floors. I like the graphics and sound in the SMS version more. Also, the player character moves faster.

Dragon Crystal started out cool but got old REAL fast when you find out there's no way to continue. Yay, an RPG-like action game that has random solutions and no way to get back where you were. You may as well play Alleyway...it's the same level of difficulty to beat on the small screen, only without the RPG elements. At least Alleyway has an ending sequence.

The game is called 7th Dragon. (http://www.nintendic.com/news/2972) and it's for DS. I'm kinda disappointed, as I was hoping it'd be an epic console RPG for PS3 or 360. I love the DS, but it has a bunch of RPGs out now and more to be released, so I didn't think it'd be getting another one from Sega since World Destruction is coming out soon. Oh well, I'm sure I'll still enjoy this game too.

Still -- Reiko Kodama's on board? Count me in.

I didn't even know Epoch was still around these days.

Fatal Labyrinth for the Sega Genesis was also a Nethack clone.

The character moves along at the same pace in the GG version if you hold the start button down.

You're able to continue in Dragon Crystal, you just need to pick up enough of the moneybags that are scattered about

Alright, I clearly have to research rogue-likes on consoles... but having just found a game gear in my closet I might have to try and track a copy down. Or if I try and like the SMS version better... *sigh* I've bought/sold/rebought a SMS system so many times now... lol.

to rbudrick - you clearly have never gotten sucked into the hefty and dangerous world of Nethack Addiction. I have a client in secret at work (although I honestly haven't had time to even get one level's worth of play in for over two years) and play on any linux box I can find. It's text based, completely random save for a few instances that always appear, and the 'no continues' part is necessary for the charm.

The entire concept is that Nethack is one of the hardest, most frustratingly difficult RPGs to beat. And yet the code is so well made and the game so... well perfect once you play that you keep playing. People have beaten it, and in fact some get so good to the point they can repeatedly do so. It's like "Hardcore" mode in Diablo II - once you're done - you're done.

I really recommend anyone with any sort of terminal-navigation skills to try nethack out. Seriously - and don't come find me to hurt me when you're addicted too. :P

From what I've seen so far 7th Dragon looks like a throw back to the RPG mechanics of an 8-bit era. It's made by the same people who did the Etrian Odyssey games (you know those dungeon crawlers), so the oldschool theme is not surprising.

Not only does the music sound old, but you can build a party from a choice of generic archtypes, instead of modern storytelling crutch of using fleshed out personalities. The plot centers around a "collect them all" theme. Popular grails in the past included crystals, orbs, manas, etc. In this case, however, you have to seek out and kill seven dragons. The battle system is apparently traditional menu based as well.

I'm looking forward to it already.

If you have a DS, check out Shiren the Wanderer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shiren_the_Wanderer). It's one of the best rogue-like's/NetHack clones ever made in my opinion.
