I know the Genesis had some great sports titles and I wanted to get some. I was wondering what the best of each sport is. Now I only want one of each sport, so suggesting 2 football games won't do. That includes both arcade and Sim style games.
Baseball
Football
BasketBall
Hockey-- Most seem to say NHLPA '93
Soccer
Golf
Tennis
Wrestling
Boxing
And any other MAJOR sports I might be missing.

Mutant League Hockey is another good one. NHL 94 is also widely considered to be the best hockey game.

World Series Baseball for Genesis is the best baseball game.......period! A close second being the Baseball Stars Series on the NES.

I love the Genesis. I can't get enough of it. Here are my favorites...
Baseball: World Series Baseball (any year); Sportstalk Baseball (get either one)
Football: Madden ('91-'93); Tecmo Super Bowl (get any one)
BasketBall: NBA Live '95
Hockey: NHLPA '93; NHL '94 (get either one)
Soccer: FIFA '95
Golf: PGA Tour I,II,III (get either one)
Tennis: Wimbledon
** They're all dirt cheap, get 'em all; you'll find interesting differences between different years of the same title. For NHL '93 & '94 for example, in '94 you might get hooked on using the one-timer shooting feature whereas in '93 you get more rebounds off the goalies for scoring opportunities - and with two players it's super fun.

Baseball - I don't care too much for baseball, so the only one I have (and have played) is Tecmo Super Baseball, only because it was CIB and 50 cents.
Football - Mutant League Football
Basketball - NBA Live '96 or NBA Jam, depending on whether simulation or arcade appeals more to you.
Hockey - Mutant League Hockey
Soccer - I don't own and haven't played any soccer games on the system, but I've heard good things about FIFA '95.
Golf - PGA Tour Golf III
Boxing - Boxing Legends of the Ring
Oh, and Tiny Toon Adventures: ACME All-Stars is also worth a look.
NHL '94, World Series Baseball and NBA JAM: TE are the ones I enjoyed the most.

NHL 94 seems to be widely regarded as the best...
But having grown up with 96,97, and 98...I liked 96 and 98 the best. If I had to pick one it would be 96. I remember renting 94 back in the day...and it felt sluggish compared to the newer ones?
Writing about this makes me realize how long it's been since I've played a semi-current hockey game...hmm, might have to fix that.

Unlike some of the others posting here, I'll try to give you a "why." Not to criticize any earlier replies, of course, the majority of which are good.
BASEBALL
-World Series Baseball: This series has great presentation for a 16-bit system, it looks and sounds very realistic. Plus the stat tracking is incredible. The big flaw with this series is that it is far too easy to pile up HUGE offensive stats once you get the hang of batting/basestealing and the first couple of games in the series had a few annoying bugs, none of which ruined the overall experience. One bug, for example, resets your stolen base and home run numbers if you put up too many with a single player in one season. I believe there were 4 versions of World Series Baseball on the Genesis (over a 4 year period) and I'd recommend any of them but the original or WSB 96 are the ones I prefer.
-Tommy Lasorda Baseball: Good arcade style gameplay and a challenging but fair computer opponent. This was a very early title in the Genesis library. Unlike World Series Baseball, though, you don't get real players or teams. The ones in this game are fictional.
FOOTBALL
-NFL Quarterback Club/NFL Quarterback Club 96 (either): The first of the two games in this series has the Quarterback Challenge events, which is a great little minigame that is based on a real NFL competition that quarterbacks participate in (from the Pro Bowl, I believe). I think the second game dropped this from the features. For a novice football player, either of these makes for a good 16-bit football game. A good user friendly game with nice presentation.
BASKETBALL
-NBA Live 95/96: Either one is good, some like 95 better and others prefer 96. This series helped set the stage for modern basketball simulations.
-NBA Jam/NBA Jam TE: Either one makes for a great single or multi-player arcade basketball session. Myself I prefer the original but TE had lots of new features.
HOCKEY
-NHL 93-96: Any of the EA NHL titles from this four year period should be your first Genesis hockey choice. Most folks prefer 93 (which still used "NHLPA" at the front) or NHL 94 and they hate on NHL 95 (which removed fighting) but all four of them play a great game of hockey.
BOXING
-Greatest Heavyweights: An update of Evander Holyfield's boxing game (also on the Genesis). You get to play as or against real life several boxing legends, all of whom fight similar to their real life counterparts. Throw in an addictive career mode, battery backup, a clever training mode, user friendly controls, excellent presentation, very clean graphics (for the time) and you have yourself a killer side-view boxing game. A pretty good title if you'd rather have a more realistic experience than you'd get from something from the arcade boxing genre like Punch Out.
WRESTLING
-WWF Royal Rumble: There were lots of wrestling games on the Genesis, especially WWF ones. This one is the best, because of the control scheme, graphics, roster of wrestlers and the inclusion of the Royal Rumble match itself, which set this apart from any other 16-bit wrestling game.

Pedobear, that's scary!
I personally like Bulls vs. Lakers. There's nothing like being Michael Jordan and soaring to the hoop.
I do think I am partial to this game, since it was one of the few Genesis games I had growing up, so I played it.

Damn straight! Remember the scream a player would yell when he got killed with a concealed weapon in a pile-up? LOL
Anyhoo, Powerball is a good futuristic mix of soccer, football, and wrestling. The body attacks are wickedly brutal. Plus, each win allows you to add upgrade points to your team's players.

The best soccer game on the system is Sensible Soccer by far.

The Genesis is about the only system I've ever played sports games on. My favorites are Mutant League Hockey and Football, WWF Royal Rumble, NBA Jam, and NFL Quarterback Club.

If you are a fan of games such as Mutant League Hockey and Football, try Super Baseball 2020... It's similar in execution (no pun intended) to the above games, but with baseball...

Some one asked me, "Why not just get them all?" I was aiming to just get the "best of" each sport, but i was wondering if i would be expensive just to get them all complete with box and manual? What do you think??

I dont know the good ones, I know the bad ones. Every single EA sports game for the Genesis. For every 20 Genesis games I find in the wild, 19 of them are EA sports games. Someone should melt them down and make them into something useful.
Sorry for not contributing to the topic.

They should be cheap to get if you keep your eye open for them, even some game stores I've been to sell complete sports games for $0.49 each(it really depends on the store). Just check out flea markets, garage sales, and craigslist/kijiji. Sports games are the least wanted and most worthless of all Genesis games but they also sold well originally, they should still be left behind when other games are already sold off. I'm not sure how cheap you're looking to get them, they should be easy to find for around $3-5 each but can be found for $1 or less if you really look for them.
NBA Jam/NBA Jam TE has already been mentioned but it's a good game so I'll mention it again. Also for a wrestling game try Saturday Night Slam Masters. I'm really not into sports games at all, but I do like those games.

I'd say what ever ones you played as a kid. For me it was Tommy LaSorda Baseball and Sports Talk Football. The 2 Mutant league's do rock. I also like Cyberball. I think there's a Tecmo Superbowl on Gene. Out of any the Mutant League are hardest to find. I find even if someone says this is better than that I still like the ones I played as a kid. They are always the ones I compare things to. If somethings different I usually say oh I like how the other one is. Kinda weird. Stuck in my ways I guess?
ps I'm selling a shit load of sports Genesis games right no on Ebay
