Hey guys, I have been watching his videos for quite awhile now and figured some of you may really enjoy it, I find them very enjoyable to watch (I refered him to DP seeing as he would probably fit in well here). No useless cursing (except for outakes), nice editing, and recorded in HD this guy just has a great personality and covers retro, modern, events, etc. No I am not like best friends with him trying to get him hits (He is in Canada I am in NY) I just feel he deserves more exposure over all of the terrible AVGN wannabes out there (I believe he says he was inspired by AVGN, however his style is much different). Here are a couple of my favorite videos of his:
Mega Man special:

Dragon Quest IV (DS) Review:

A straight shooter without having to be geeky about it. Honest and lots of info, now this is the kinda reviews I wanna watch. He has a Blue Stinger review, that's just the shit right there.
Homeboy is getting added to the list for sure. Keep up the good work yo.

Yeah, not bad. I watched the Turbographx and Blue Stinger reviews, enjoyed them both. It's nice that it seems like that not only does he like games...but likes playing them. From the two I watched it actually seems he has some sort of time investment to these games-- not the "oh I bought this on ebay, played for 5 mins, and now im going to write a review about how it sucks" kind of "reviews" we see alot on the tube. An actual gamer talking about games? You don't say...
Thanks for the heads up PDorr3.

I like how he has a genuine enthusiasm for the games he's reviewing. It's what made magazines like Gamefan so memorable. I also enjoy how he keeps the production values modest and instead fills the runtime with actual content.

QFT. I pretty much watched all of his videos last night, and enjoyed all of them. I like how he actually went back to the spot where he first played his "favorite game ever" and just filmed it for posterity. I realize not all gamers would have an interest in where he first played Phantasy Star, but for me it brought back nostalgic memories of the first time I played videogames, where I was sitting, where the tv was...so on..
The only thing I wish he would add more to is gameplay footage (with voice over) for some of the more "obscure" games he is reviewing. He shows some clips or stills, but I'd prefer just a tad more. He does a lot of "box shaking" that would work perfect with a little picture in picture of whatever he is describing goin on along side his explanation of what rocks.. Of course, posting that here isn't going to change anything, so I digress.
Unrelated to the thread but I was just thumbing through an old Gamefan today.. such great layouts. It's all about love for the games/systems. I feel like doing one of these videos someday, and showcasing the 32x. Granted, it failed. Everyone knows that. I want SOMEONE to give love to it. Surely, it brought someone joy. At least it did for me.

Man I loved the 32x at first. I got it for Christmas the year it came out and it rocked my world, until I got to the end of DOOM and couldn't figure out why the hell it only had 15 levels.
Back on topic,
Anyway dude, welcome to the site, you should totally do a vid on Secret of Evermore cause it pwns Mana in every way.
I really enjoyed the videos. My watch list is up to four now, it's nice to see honest reviews on games from someone who knows their stuff, collecting is a big plus. I too feel like more than 5 minutes is spent on a game and that really shows. I also like how I can hear the speaking with my old laptop speakers even when I have a problem hearing low voices, good audio is a big plus in my book.
Welcome to the site dude, keep the good work up.

Whoa, he has The Ninja Warriors in his first video?! That alone is awesome. I expect great things from this guy. ^_^
ADD: Whoopsie, I failed to notice HCG joined above. Welcome to the fold, man! I'll have to see your stuff when I get the time, but I see in your first video that you intend to look at...
Ys
Shock Troopers (2nd Squad, but I assume/hope for the first as well)
Mutation Nation (!)
Dracula X: Rondo of Blood
Crossed Swords
I... can't identify the game where three people are standing with swords on black-and-white tiles, but it looks cool
I don't know the game with the blue elephant guy and large winged creature either >_<
The Ninja Warriors and its sequel, TNW Again (!!)
Magician Lord
Baseball Stars 2
Capcom's Willow arcade game (!!!)
You're already awesome for this, and I await to see what else you have in store! And... is it okay if I ask what are those two games that I can't identify? :embarrassed:
This guy is outstanding. Unlike the others I've seen (AVGN, Irate Gamer, and HVGN), this guy really knows his stuff well. Not saying they don't, but I can tell that HCG actually played the games in his youth, and was always a huge gaming fan. With the others, I sometimes feel they are just in this for the fame. There's no way in hell the others owned a Neo-Geo in 1991. I would put money on it that they never even heard of it then, let alone owned one. Not so with HCG. Back in '89 and '90, he was probably looking forward to the Konix Multi System and Super Grafx coming out, like myself.
I also love his top 10. He puts Phantasy Star 1 and Ys: Book I and II in there. I thought I was the only the only one out there that ranked them so high. The only difference I have is I put Ys at number one ever.
He also appears to be totally neutral, and not a fan boy of any particular system. I commend him for that, I wish I could be so independant. I'm looking forward to seeing him review some Golden Age classics, along with more from the NES era.
OH! That reminds me, like myself, he also says "Ness" (ryming with "Jess"), rather than spelling out N-E-S like most others. Hearing that was a pleasent surprise.
All in all, he doesn't need fancy editing, nor does he have to say something funny every 10 seconds. He's just here to review games, and that's all I ask for. Highly recommended.
His latest video is out, and it's the Neo-Geo. Great episode, this guy is great when you're looking for serious info and not a laugh.

I checked out his DQ 4 review. Halfway through, I decided it wasn't worth wasting my time anymore and closed the video to post this.
He's got some good captures. He has some nice transitions. His voice is OK. It's not inherently irritating like many reviewers and you can make out what he says.
But he has no plan. It seemed like he just rambled on in front of his webcam about random junk and just edited bits of his long tirade together. Halfway in I still didn't know much about the remake and I didn't feel he was ever going to get around to telling me. It wasn't entertaining and it just wasn't worth watching anymore.
And he raves for what seems like an eternity about a RPG having a save feature. Gosh. Really? Who ever puts save features on those kinds of games?
He needs to work on his verbal presentation, even if he needs to follow a rigid script. At the very least, he needs a better outline for what he's doing and some work on avoiding his verbal tics. Other than that, some better lighting in his review area would be good too.

Ha, this is pretty much exactly what I just did. I think the dude knows his stuff and has a passion for games but I don't think that particle video was very good at all. He kind of stumbled over himself and rambled. I would also rather see more game video than him. That's not a knock on him, but it's a video about a game, so I'd prefer to see more DQIV and less man. He also reused a lot of the game footage throughout the video which bugged me a bit.
And finally, I hate it when people say "Ness". That's just me being picky though. I'll agree with Kitsune, the dude has potential.

That's one of the reasons I like him. If you can pronounce an acronym, you say the word out (NASA, FIMA, S.E.A.L, etc.). If you can't, you say the letters (SMS, SNK, USA, etc.).

Here he is praising the Neo-Geo, and for getting a couple of small things wrong, he's called an "AIDS/cancer patiant", a "faggot", and threatened with "I would knock his fuckin' teeth out." A disgusting forum, I thought Neo-Geo die-hards were supposed to be sophisticated, upper middle class, and over 30. That one loser "EvilEvoIX" is such an arrogant jerk I would like to personally see him dragged outside his house and smacked around a bit.

Yeah I'm surprised. I'm not going to pretend that I spend any time at the NG forums, but I just kind of expect any forum based on older games would have reasonable people in it. I don't think I've ever seen someone post something like this on DP:
Not only does this douche bag get his information wrong, he has no idea on the concept of time/years of anything gaming. If I saw this fucking lame-ass excuse for a gamer, I would knock his fuckin' teeth out and shove a timetable of gaming in his pasty-ass face! Neo-Geo fan? You have to be fucking kidding me...... I feel like puking after seeing this faggot video, thank you....
I really don't care if the guy made a few mistakes. I noticed them too. He included a video of Sam Sho 2 when he mentioned Sam Sho 1. Big deal! All in all he did a great job. Plus, it's a lot better than I could do.

The Neo Geo elites are a strange bunch. Its like people from the early 90's BBS days who hated the influx of people who began to flood the internet. They have their nose turned up at people who don't look at the Neo Geo in the way that they collectively do. There is some kind of Neo Geo "code of ethics" that the members of that forum adhere to and attack people who don't present the Neo Geo in the light that they prefer. Its really pointless and stupid if you really think about it.
The Neo Geo elites basically invested in a system that the mainstream public couldnt enjoy intially because of the price point. They liked the fact that they could play the top of the line games why the rest of the people had to play the SNES or Genesis. Its an elitist sort of mentality from top to bottom. They are now angry that PS2 players can enjoy the gem games. They are sort of like certain Jews who didn't want Gentiles to know what they knew or enjoy the same gaming magic they did.
The Happy Console Gamer is a cool dude in my book, he comes off very humble and as someone who is very knowledgable. Most of all it seems he has a life outside of gaming.
He even gave a shoutout to this site on one of his vids!
He is the type of collector we should all thrive to be, humble and enjoy the games and collecting aspect, not elitist pricks who put rules on how you should be a gamer.

Those Neo Geo guys are just insane, they're even bashing his collection for no real reason. He has a big collection of thousands of games but he didn't show off any R10s, so it sucks? O_O
I respect people who collect what they like to play. Just collecting rarities to impress other people seems kind of shallow, it's like the only way they're liked is if they have something rare and valuable. Not everyone is that rich either, most people can't afford the extreme rarities(I've got nothing against people with money, just people who are snobbish).

My point is of all these collectors, sure some have big collections, who cares, so do I (3000+ games), but I'm sorry, Chrono Trigger isn't rare. Earthbound isn't rare. Shining Force 2 isn't rare. Final Fanasty 7 isn't rare. These games are just really popular and thus command a certain value. I've got a boxed complete Fairchild Channel F with 18 of the 22 games released. Now thats something to care about. Would any of the above mentioned people that make these "collection" videos care? Nope. I want to see more out of these videos. I don't want to see a big collection filled mostly with games I already have. I want to see the rarities and the obscure. If the highlights of your collection are games released by Working Designs or Atlus then you've really not got much of a collection at all. There was obviously a lot of time and dedication spent in obtaining the games though, so, in the end, I can respect their collections.
I should also add that even to this day I am bit awe struck when I see AES games, even a small amount (say ~10-15). Particularly the english games. Even some of the more common AES games are more rare than the "rare" games on other systems. For example, in this video he holds up an english Art of Fighting 2.. It's not uber rare (by AES standards) or terribly valuable, but that game doesn't exactly grow on trees. Very respectable.

Since when is it a requirement that in order to be a collector, one must have several games worth 4 - 5 figures?
collector
Noun
1. a person who collects objects as a hobby
2. a person employed to collect debts, rents, or tickets
Those guys need to do some self evaluation and get their priorities in life straight, and not lose sleep over what constitutes a collector.

I love the happy console gamer. I sent him an email the other day thanking him for his quality reviews. I asked him if he could do a Metal Slug series; he said maybe in the future. I also asked him if he buys things for his reviews or does he just pull them from his collection. I also asked him how much he spends on games in a given month. He first said that he only reviews games he has and doesn't buy them to review them, and he also said he spends about $300 a month on games (I am guessing Canadian). He is a serious collector.
I will continue to watch all his episodes and tell people about him if the opportunity arrises. Most people try to be somebody else when reviewing games on YouTube. I just think he is being himself.

I messaged him as well, as I really enjoy his videos, and I figure that it was an opportunity to get a response before he gets too big to keep up with emails, like the AVGN or HVGN. I really like his game reviews, as they don't seem scripted and he seems to be genuinely passionate about everything he says. However, I don't really have a huge interest in seeing the stuff in his collection (mostly because I'm not really into anime, soundtracks or most current systems), so I wish he'd stick more to actual reviews.

Opps, my mistake. So he's defiantly in BC, and he may live in the city of Victoria. I heard him say where he lived in one of his videos.
It shows how sparsely populated certain parts of Canada is though, when you can mix up cities and provinces (I can't say I wouldn't have done it myself).

joe should hire this guy to work along with the Nerd at digitpress events, i could see them being friends and working some kind of angle into the videos.
it would be cool to see HCG and AVGN sitting at a table talking about some crappy games.
HCG did a good job with BlueStinger in that regard

Both Joe and the Nerd are in NJ. HCG is in Victoria, Canada.

He's probably the bastard who raids all the local thrifts!
Also, Vancouver and Victoria tend to get mixed up a LOT. Victoria is the capital of the province, and is on Vancouver Island. Vancouver is the biggest city, but is NOT on Vancouver island - it's on the mainland. So he may well be in Vic.
Lots of online stuff (Facebook, etc) doesn't have an option for Victoria but usually has Vancouver - so people from here tend to pick that as the closest location. Because god knows we don't want people to think we're from SEATTLE.

Still have to check this guy out, but it sounds like I'll enjoy his stuff. I was dumbstruck by the venom HCG received over at the neo-geo boards. Less than the venom, I was struck by this guy's statement:

22 games for the Fairchild F? This person loses nerd points when he forgets how many games were released for the Fairchild... especially since they're numbered and go up to 26. LOL (well, maybe he's in a different country and the number released there was different, though I don't know why I should give him the benefit of the doubt.)
Anyway thanks for posting reference to HCG, looking forward to enjoying his vids.

HCG is great. Him and Robman never seem like they're reading off a script or acting, like the AVGN and Irate Gamer always do. The positive attitude and genuine enthusiasm HCG has for the games and items it covers is what makes it so entertaining, and it personally makes me more excited about games, too.
New videos! Some of his best yet, the Phantasy Star series!

Happy Console Gamer is a friend of mine and came by my store today to shoot an episode (after joining us party hopping in the Gamedeals Party Van the night before). Definately watch his videos, they're all kinds of quality.

pete dorr is another good reviewer on youtube
He used to post here fairly regularly before his videos sort of took off in popularity. I recall one video where he wore a Digital Press shirt and plugged the Collector's Guide, which I thought was pretty cool. You might notice that he actually started this thread.
It seems I haven't posted in here yet for some reason, but I'll go ahead and echo sentiments that HCG's videos are pure quality. I get the feeling he probably works in video production to some extent or another.
I really only have one criticism, which is that the title sequences usually seem to be mixed a bit louder than the normal audio... I've been blasted through my headphones by it a few times when I haven't been paying attention. But really, that's just a minor thing. Since Lukemorse1 is out of commission, HappyConsoleGamer is once again my game-related youtube channel of choice. Basically it's the only one I check and watch regularly.

Weird, I found out about HCG through this thread and have been watching his videos ever since, and then I found out about Pete Dorr through HCG, and somehow I never noticed that Pete strated this thread until you mentioned something. Weird how things like this work out soemthing. Either way, I enjoy both Pete and HGC's videos, I am subscribed to both and usually watch their new videos once I notice they're up.
It sucks that his camera broke. He hasn't done a video (besides Outtakes part 8) in a month.

Yeah, definitely. From what I can gather though he's sent the thing off to Canon to be repaired, so that can take some weeks. In the meantime Lukemorse1 is doing videos again, sporadically. There's also CornShaqGaming's playthrough vids. These sort of fill different niche's than HCG, but they're enough to give me my classic gaming youtube fix.
HCG and Rob Man exchanged some awesome gifts in this episode.

He's a decent reviewer and all. I think my thing is I'm just not much for watching reviews done on video. I'm more comfortable reading then watching someone play a game and talk about it as they play, or before/after playing, no matter how good the production is. Just not my preferred format, but I will glance at his stuff now and then for the heck of it.
