Well, after many years of on-and-off trying, I am finally to the point where I consider my Japanese Mega CD collection complete. I am counting a total of 117 releases. (I'm missing one or two demos, but oh well.)

Mega CD is fun because it's not that large a library to collect, it's mostly cheap, and there are more than a couple of hidden classics to be found. I'm especially proud of this because, for the most part, I did it the "hard way" -- going around shops and flea-markets in Japan when I lived there and whenever I came back for business and such. I didn't go to the auctions or to other collectors until I needed 3 or 4 titles to finish up.

Here are all the games laid out on the futon. On the bottom-most row are the games I had the most trouble finding: Surgical Strike, Fahrenheit, Psychic Detective Series Vol. 4: Orgel, and Sing!! Sega Game Music. (The first two are really the only Mega-CD games that go for serious premium prices in Japan.)

Here is the last title I needed: Fresh Cleaner. For those who don't know, this is just a normal CD lens cleaner. I count it in the collection because it is an actual bootable Mega CD; if you load it up, you get some instructions and a cute little animation while the cleaner is doing its thing.

I think this'll be it as far as trying to complete collections go. Thanks for putting out such a wonderfully bulky CD system, Sega!

Sweet. Are you fluent in Japanese? How many have you played, and of that beaten on the system thus far? What unit do you play these on, and is it modded? Congrats on the build of such a library of games!

Congrats!

Though ... I think the dog needs a LOLCats style "DO NOT WANT FRESH CLEANER!" text treatment.

Out of interest, which are your favourite games? Any hidden japanese gems?

Nice collection and dog. The boxes are a lot smaller than Sega CD boxes...

I agree with Frankie, I so want to put that pic on lolCats or lolDogs, with your permission of course.

Aw thanks for the replies.

These days I mainly write and do translation to and fro involving Japanese.

I use a regular old Mega CD 2 attached to a US Genesis to play these, unless I'm being lazy in which case I load up Fusion.

I am not so good with finishing games, sadly...There are a lot of good RPGs and (in particular) adventures that I like, but that isn't much help if you don't know Japanese. I think every Sega fan should own the two Game no Kanzume volumes, especially the second one 'cos it has 16t and Teddy Boy Blues on it and they rock.

And how is the Urusei Yatsura game? It looks quite technically impressive.

Nice collection. But as DP's resident demo disc mofo--which demos are available for the system? The PAL version of the Mega Drive has a Star Wars: Rebel Assault demo that I'm about to snag(too bad I don't have a PAL Mega Drive to play it on).

I bet that is really satisfying! Glad to hear that's how you did it--I can only hope someday I can make a collection the same way (probably a little easier to do in Japan..maybe). Either way, great collection, thanks for sharing it with us.

I love your dog!!! Great job on the complete collection. Its good to see you can get a majority of a collection through flea markets.

I'd say the Sing CD Audio is the rarest to find.
I only count 116,i'm curious how you count 117..maybe you count Lethal Enforcers 1&2 more than 2 (twice with gunset..?)

Demo discs I'm aware of:
- Keio flying squadron (missing it)
- Popfulmail (own it)
- Record of Lodoss War (own it, but it was part of a mook which i don't own)
- Urusei Yatsura (own it)

There's a much larger number of in-store demo discs which I probably won't have any hope of getting.

Adol: in terms of distinct releases, 116 is correct. I'd guess the 117th game I'm thinking of is the "special edition" of Keio which has different (shiny) packaging and comes with a card.

Sing!! wasn't so hard to find, I thought, once you knew what to look for. Meanwhile, Orgel took absolutely forever for some reason, I couldn't find it for any price even in Akihabara.

Congratulations, that's awesome. :) I really want to get into Mega CD, but I haven't made the leap yet. I got two Mega CD games, but I've yet to figure out how exactly I'm going to play them. There's really not enough information out there on Mega CD importing from what I've seen. What do you recommend as the cheapest method an American can take to play Mega CD games on a TV (that is, without getting emulation or anything involved)? Once I get things figured out I know the first thing I want to hit is all those awesome looking Wolf Team games.

Thanks fennec. That doesn't seem like it will take too long to complete. I just have to find a good reliable source.

I'd say just buy a Mega CD 2, those seem to be the cheapest around Japan. You can plug a US Genesis into it and it'll play Japanese CDs just fine.

It's possible to dump CDs to disc, change the region coding on them and burn them to a CDR for play on a US Sega CD, but it's unreliable in my experience.

Yeah, I've tried that with no success.

I had no idea that a Mega CD could be plugged into a Genesis. Does it matter if it's a Genesis 1 or 2? I always entertained the idea of picking up a Wondermega to just have everything in one, but that seems like a much better idea, as I imagine Wondermega systems are a pain to find and massively expensive. Plus I already have a Genesis 3 that could play most Mega Drive imports, so the Mega CD is the only thing I'm particularly concerned about. So thanks for the recommendation, I'm definitely going to look into that. :)

Any Genesis 1 or 2 oughta work. I use my original Genesis from Xmas '91 and have no problems with it.

I'd like to get a boxed WonderMega, but not enough to shell out for shipping at this point...

is there a list of all the games somewhere? I've got about 100 imports for my Saturn now, so I'd like to see which of those Mega CD games I'd like to go for

Congrats on finishing your Mega CD collection! I am almost there as I think I have about 60 of those titles. I, too, feel the system is underrated and has a good number of great games on it. BTW, whats on the demo disc for Urusei Yatsura? That was one of my first Mega CD games and its still in my top 5 for the system (and thus why I felt I had to put it as my first video upload on YouTube lol). The demo disc you speak of for Keio Flying Squadron...any idea if its the same as a demo released for Keio for the PAL Mega CD? That actually stands as my only demo disc for the system :(

To reply to another post, Urusei Yatsura on the Mega CD is a great game. It really shows what the system could do with in-game animation in the right hands. Funny how that is since another game also shows the same thing...I speak of Lunar: Eternal Blue...also developed by Game Arts :)
