Anyone else who picked this up? Really really enjoying it.

This is realy odd. I just picked this game up last weekend for $5, but I haven't played it yet. I found mine in a pawn shop mint complete with soundtrack. What's the gameplay like?

Very traditional JRPG so far but great humour and very fastpaced. Only played 45 mins so far though!

Wait, you must've picked up the PS1 version, no?

Looks cute, I'll look for a copy.

Is this a sequel or spin-off from the PS1 Rhapsody?

edit: apparently it's some kind of weird port?

Heard it was somehow inferior to the PS1 version, which confounds me given how awful the PS1 game was. I am interested in seeing how they changed up the combat system, which I guess is totally different?

I won't be paying full price for it (I made that mistake with the PS1 game), but if I see it in the bargain bin, I'll pick it up and give it a shot.

Afraid I can't comment on the changes vs the PS1 version, since I haven't played that one - but some of the changes (new playable characters, etc) are highlighted on the official website.

The PS1 game was so sickeningly sweet it literally made me sick.

lmao !

When i say literally, i mean it. The game was so sugary it made me sick to my stomach. It reminded me of eating too much cake frosting.

Yea, this is the ps1 version. I thought that's what you were talking about. I didn't even know it came out for DS.

Just came out for the DS (hence the "NDS" in my subject line ;) )

I have to admit, it is sooo overly cute but i am really loving it... played a bit further in bed last night and still enjoying it... very lighthearted and easy, so far, which is such a nice change from a lot of other overly violent games i've been playing lately.

I have been sold out of this game pretty much all week at my store. Getting daily shipments of it, too. Just keeps selling.

Bought this for PS1 back in the day. While I loved the art style, I can't say I was a fan of the difficulty level.

One of the few games where the American voice overs didn't annoy the shit out of me, however.

Wonder if this release will drive the price down on the PS1 version even more?

It already did when Atlus re-release them a year ago along with Persona 2. I did pick up the NDS version today. :)

Can anyone tell me if the songs on the DS version are recorded in English? Or is it Japanese with english subtitles? I loved the original but it was too damn easy, I know the battle system is completely different in the remake, but if they removed the English music then I'm going to be... not happy. :/

I was really tempted to buy it, but I've resisted so far. Despite all its flaws, I really had a fun time with the PlayStation version. It's just such a cute, charming game, and normally I'm not into super cutesy anime crap but it's so straightforward and genuine about how it is that it comes off as more endearing than nauseating. I just wish they'd bring over the other games instead. Why bother with a second version of Rhapsody when the entire rest of the series has never left Japan? And the imports are pretty expensive too, so a cheap, easy way to play them would be great, especially with an English localization.

I must say, though, the new art for Rhapsody stinks. The art by Yoshiharu Nomura was very distinct and pretty, but now it's just generic anime. I swear, Nomura was the best artist Nippon Ichi ever had. They went from having all these beautiful full-figured ladies to anorexic lolitas in Disgaea and such. Total downgrade.

Ds verson fails. :(

What really makes the DS version fail is that I've heard talk that, while Nippon Ichi did localize the new scenes in the game, it appears as if they've glitched up the means of accessing them. It's still speculative at this point and all Nippon Ichi is saying is "It SHOULD be there", but when people are doing things exactly like in the Japanese version and it still doesn't trigger anything, it's not a good sign. One of them is supposed to be an option on the title screen after you save a cleared file, but so far no one has gotten it and it appears as if saving a clear file does absolutely nothing at all in the US version.

I do want to get the DS version sooner or later, but seeing as the extra content would be my main reason to get it, I'm going to wait and see what happens. Who knows, maybe Nippon Ichi will do a recall. If the content is really inaccessible and there is no recall, that would be a pretty big slap in the face to fans that actually supported the game from the beginning and want to see new Marl Kingdom content released in the US (the new scenarios are actually from the PS2 game Angel's Present).

Has anyone bothered going in and disassembling the NDS file or hacking the SAV files yet to further explore the issue? Seems like a clear cut case of a flash cart coming in pretty handy to QC Nippon Ichi's QA department.

But hey, a buggy NDS release? No way!

There's talk of it, but I don't think anyone has tried anything just yet. They seem more preoccupied hacking the game to replace the Japanese songs with the PlayStation's English songs. :/

I did, however, hear that somebody got in contact with a member of the press who had received a review copy. In all the professional reviews out there, they mention the bonus content, and this guy confirms it was a simple matter of saving his beaten file and loading up a new option that appeared on the title screen. Considering they just blow through the game as fast as they can to meet deadlines, I kinda doubt that every reviewer found some impossibly difficult trigger that no normal player has discovered. I think at this point it's pretty much proven that the bonus content is glitched, and something must've happened between sending out the review copies and the retail copies hitting store shelves.

Which presents an interesting situation for collectors. If no recall is issued, the reviewers are going to be sitting on a very desirable item. Although, if a recall is issued, then perhaps the original glitched version will be tough to find. Probably not so much the latter, though, since plenty of people wouldn't be aware of the problem with their copy and/or wouldn't care.

Well, hopefully someone with a review copy finds it in their heart to dump an image so that it can be quickly decompiled and compared vs. the retail version. Shouldn't take very long at all; I never realized how easy it was to decompile DS games until I decided to fart around with Contra 4 and see how the NES games were stored (go figure, they were in iNES format).

I wanted to...until I heard about Chrono Trigger DS. I already own the PSX version of Rhapsody, anyway, so it can wait for now.

Did all copies come with a soundtrack? I just got a new copy from EB Games, but as it was the last copy it's "Gamestop new". Did I miss out on something that was supposed to be included? I haven't tried it yet, I just want to know if I should go back to the store before I use it. Sorry for bumping such an old thread for this.

You should have finished reading the old thread first. The person who posted about getting a soundtrack was referring to the Playstation version, not the DS version.

I did look through the thread before I posted but I somehow missed that. :embarrassed:

That's good to know, at least I think I have everything with this copy. I did look on ebay and some copies seem to have a soundtrack too, were those a preorder bonus?

I currently have my savefile of this sitting right before the final boss. The game has never really required grinding so I've just coasted along but suddenly the last boss kicks my ass. I need to spend a good few hours gaining another 10 levels or so. It's easily do-able... just feel 'ugh' about it.

Otherwise, a fun, quirky game!

Loved this game but put it down when I was unable to proceed - stuck at a save point before a boss fight (some arena in a castle?) and i had NO chance in beating the boss. Couldnt leave the area so was technically stuck. Argh.

A preorder bonus of some kind. I bought it at launch (most likely through Amazon) and did not get that CD. Not really a big issue to me, as compared to the Atlus games that came in the cardboard outercase that had CD's bundled with for the initial release. Now those first run games have been a bigger deal to me to make sure that i've gotten.

I'm really glad to hear that, I was a bit worried I missed out on stuff that was supposed to be with it. I'm not so worried about preorder stuff as that's a bit different. :)

I'd bet money that it was a Rosenqueen-exclusive pre-order bonus. I mean, it looks like it came straight from Japan, so it wouldn't be some mass-released bonus available via GameStop, Amazon, etc.

I received the CD and you are correct it was a Rosenqueen-exclusive pre-order bonus. It was not a special boxed copy. Hope that helps.
