I was at the flea market today, and I found a copy of Gyromite at one of the game vendor's booths. It had the difference with the pins, so I grabbed it for only $5. It did not have the special security screws, just the flat-tip screws, so I figured the cart was not a special one.
Well, I just opened it, and there sits the converter! The board and everything is in fantastic condition as well.

Are these things as uncommon as I've heard?
I feel lucky finding one on my first attempt. :D

Unfortunately it's not that rare, at least not around here. Some game stores actually have two stacks of Gyromites, one stack with and one without the chips. It's still nifty if you plan to get some Famicom games.

Well, to be honest, all American-release Gyromites should have flathead screws. Also, the vast majority are of the 5-screw variety (which would directly imply flathead screws, as the switch to security screws didn't happen until about '88, possibly early '89, and the switch to 3-screw carts happened primarily towards the end of '87). I would also therefore assume that your Gyromite is of the 5-screw variety, as nearly every NES cart with the Famicom adapter inside is a 5-screw cart...am I correct in that assumption?

Btw, to answer your question, they are somewhat uncommon, as I've stated before:

They are of some scarcity, as has been stated previously. I usually see several people asking for them from time to time, so they're in demand, as well. They generally go for around $10-$15 or so, versus the $2 or so that one without the adapter gets.

Whoa, I guess they aren't that rare then....

Yes, it has five screws.
I heard that it was only in five screw carts with the security bits, so that's why I thought it would turn up without the converter.

Yeah, they're not that rare but it's still an exciting find, especially if you plan on using it.

Those are rare? I never bother to pick them up as I thought nearly every copy of Gyromite had it!
