I recently acquired a boxed Sega SG-1000, but I can't get the controller to work at all. I've opened, cleaned and fixed controllers before but I can't seem to find the cause for the problem.
I've completely opened both the controller and the system, but I have no idea what the problem is. Has anybody here ever opened one of these before, or has anybody had the same problem? Any help is appreciated, I'd like to get Sega's first console to work properly ;-)

have you checked to see if the controller is getting power via a multimeter?

MrSparkle: No, it wasn't a Ebay auction, I got it straight from Japan.
77punk: Unfortunately I do not have one of those. You don't happen to know of any other way to check if the controller is getting power?

you can get a multimeter for insanely cheap these days. http://shop.etoolscity.com/Handheld-Digital-ACDC-Multimeter/M/B000RP9VTO.htm?utm_campaign=froogle&utm_medium=organic&utm_source=froogle that one is $5 plus shipping which isn't a bad investment considering the price the sg-1000 goes for these days. If you aren't sure how to use one http://mechatronics.mech.northwestern.edu/design_ref/tools/multimeter.html here is a quick guide to get you up to speed. Hope that helps you out.
http://www.ladyada.net/library/metertut/continuity.html and this one is more inline with what you'll specifically be doing testing for continuity.

Really sorry for bumping, but we actually have someone working on this right now. There is a good possibility he can get the controllers to work again.

Sega Mark III/Master System controllers should work fine on the SG-1000.

If it's anything like an SMS pad, there are no real electronics in the controller other than maybe a resistor or two.
If it doesn't work at all, either the cable has an internal break in it somewhere, or the controller port is not working for some reason.
If I had to take a guess, I'd say it's the cable, and you should check for continuity with a multimeter.

Sega Mark III/Master System controllers should work fine on the SG-1000.When you assume...
Master System controllers don't work properly on the SG-1000. Mark III ones do. Unfortunately, both SG-1000 and Mark III controllers are hard to come by.
Super Potato in Akihabara had a few last time I checked. If you're in desperate need, PM me and maybe we can get something worked out. It won't be cheaper than fixing your old controller, though!
