I remember playing Goldeneye 007 a long time ago at my friend's house before I got the game and his copy was rated 'M'. I thought "damn, my mom won't let me get that" but then to my surprise she actually let me, because it was rated 'T'. Yeah, I see that it was rated 'T' when it came out, and my copy is a Player's Choice edition and it's rated 'T' so does anyone know when or why it went to 'M'?

Now that I've gone looking I can't find a single copy rated M - did I really falsify this memory?

I can't think of why it would have ever been "M." I do recall seeing a gold cartridge at one point, a neighbor of mine had it. Maybe that would have been what you were seeing?

I know for a fact that StarCraft was originally rated 'M' (I had the version 1.0), but got rerated to a 'T' later on.

Goldeneye in Germany was rated 18, but as far as I know it has always been rated T here in the states. Perfect Dark, which is based off the Goldeneye engine, was rated M. But obviously that came later in the system's lifespan.

Does an M rated NTSC US Goldeneye Exists ?

I have never seen any ... and i have the original and player's choice releases. Those years the ESRB had a graphical update on the rating's sign, the original had white color with black outline and the newer one (on player's choice) has solid black T ...

I could've sworn that I remember it being M-rated when it was first released, but I could be wrong (and from what others in this thread say, it appears that I am).

I remember a reviewer in a magazine saying that it should have been rated M, but never saw that on a cart or box.

Just looked through all of the active ebay listings with pictures of the cart. No "M"s, but a lot of White "T"s and Black "T"s, like Esko said.

black (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270283011282)
white (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360099663230)

FWIW, I don't recall it ever being rated mature.

I'm with the majority in having bought it new back in the day and never having seen an M-rated copy.

If it was rated M before, then it's rated T solely because Nintendo pulled some strings.

Take a look at Chrono Trigger on the SNES, It's rated K-A(Kids to Adults,) and who can say FF4 is worse? But if you look at Final Fantasy Chronicles on the PSX, it's rated T, and that's the same with FF Anthology and Origins.

Though if you now go and look at FFDoS, FF4, FF5, and FF6 for the GBA and FF4 for the DS, you'll notice that all the games have E ratings. All of these games were published by Nintendo in the US.

Starts rated low, but then all of the ratings are higher, but then back on the Nintendo ratings are once again low. You know Nintendo pulled some strings to make that happen. What I mean is that they all should have been T but since they are popular games Nintendo made those ratings drop(and when I said made those ratings dropped, I'm talking about becoming good friends with the ESRB, bringing their buddies Benjamin and Franklin.)

Same thing happens with Dragon Warrior. All the Dragon Warriors in the US were T rated(even those on Nintendo systems.) This was before they become popular by fans who once claimed they hated the series until Square and Enix merged(hypocrites.) Anyways, now that the series is fairly popular in the US now, I'm sure Nintendo had some strings pulled to lower the rating of Dragon Quest 4 DS down to E(even though this one is published by Square Enix.)

So yeah. The ratings system is flawed when it varies so much, especially the exact same games. I'm surprised Goldeneye 007 wasn't E rated.

Um... games are rated differently because they're rated by different people. When the ESRB rates games, they bring people in off the streets. I seriously doubt they take bribes.

Anyway, here's an interview i had with their vice president at the time: http://www.gamerhistory.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=2845

Isn't there some content-based differences between the PS and SNES versions of those games?
